More Evidence of Wooden's Greatness

Post by Smackie Chan »

I've mentioned before that I've had the distinct privilege of meeting John Wooden a couple times, once being a guest in his home for about an hour-long chat back in 2000. During that meeting, I asked him what up-and-coming college coaches he felt would make a mark on the game. His response was Bill Self, who at the time was coaching Illinois. Granted, that wasn't a Nostradamus-like prediction, since Self was somewhat widely regarded as a top-tier coach, as evidenced by his selection to replace Roy Williams at Kansas a couple years later. The game plan he put together for the ongoing game against UNC seems to bear out that the Wizard knew what he was talking about, even if the Tar Heels are able to come back from this first half ass-whoopin'.

The Bruins coulda used him earlier today.

Self took Tulsa to the Elite Eight. He was a heckuva shooting guard at Oklahoma State before the 3 point line. as far as pure shooters go, he and MIzzou's Jon Sunvold were about as good as they come "inna day" in the Big 8. give those guys the (RIP) 18 foot college 3 point line, and it's easy money.
