Hello, Grampa McTuber. I was going by observation. Out here, many Native Americans carry weight around middle instead of around hips, thighs and ass. I may be wrong.
Tenuous thread:
About .com on generic apple versus pear in women
A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) provides new evidence suggesting that mildly overweight people live longer than those who are too thin. However, body shape -- not weight -- is the single most powerful predictor of women's future health, according to women's health expert Dr. Marie Savard, who draws on extensive research in her new book, Apples & Pears: The Body Shape Solution to Weight Loss and Wellness. Dr. Savard noted that body shape was not included in the JAMA study's analysis.
"Apple-shaped women -- who gain weight around their middle -- are more likely to develop disorders like heart disease, diabetes and breast cancer. Pear-shaped women -- who add pounds around their hips, buttocks and thighs -- are more susceptible to problems like osteoporosis," said Dr. Savard.
The New York Times version (2004), generic apple versus pear
Researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., said the amount of fat in and around the abdominal organs appeared to be a good indicator of a woman's heart attack risk in the study's participants, a group of women over 70.
Overall fat did not appear to be an issue, said the researchers, led by Dr. Barbara J. Nicklas.
Fat that accumulates in the abdominal organs is less obvious than overall obesity, but women with more abdominal fat are often described as "apple" shaped, rather than "pear" shaped. For the study, the researchers followed the health of women ages 70 to 79 for four and a half years.
The gender version, euro style:
He used to swivel his hips but now he tucks in his tummy. The average British man boasts a beer gut and an "apple" shape, with his waistline often wobbling beyond his hips, according to a study of 38,000 adults.
While most women have retained a traditional "pear-shaped" figure, a growing number are joining the rotund ranks of the men. Little Ms Average in Northern Ireland, north-east England, East Anglia and Wales has also swelled into an apple shape.
The findings are a concern because people with an apple profile are at higher risk of developing conditions such as coronary heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes. Anti-obesity campaigners warned last week that measuring your waistline is a better indicator of health prospects than checking the bathroom scales. ...Apple shapes are defined as a waist to hip ratio of 0.95 and above for a man and 0.85 and over for a woman....
The British are very disrespectful. I can't believe that was actually written in THAT way. By the way, I think the chick at the beginning of this thread would be described as apple-shaped, since her weight distribution is around her middle instead of her ass, thigh and hips. She looks Native American, to me, and that's where all of this is coming from. I hope you are in fine health, yourself, Gramps. Take care.
on a short leash, apparently.
