No way the #1 NFL rivalry involves an AFL team. Fuck, no AFL team belongs in there.

Patriots - Colts? Yeah, that's been a rivalry for almost 10 years now.

That's the problem with pro sports "rivalries." With the exception of a very few, rivalries today are cyclical, and only sustainable if both teams are playoff-caliber and marketable. When the 49ers and Cowboys get together these days do people really view it as a "rivalry?" It's absolutely nothing like the rivalry between them from the 80s/90s.

The list needs to be broken down into eras. Some of those matchups today have no relevance.

Patriots - Colts? Yeah, that's been a rivalry for almost 10 years now.

I know where Goober is coming from.
It's hard to look at that list and wrap your brain around the idea that, for example, the Broncos - Browns is a better all-time rivalry than Bears - Packers.
But for a period of years, yes, all of those listed were strong rivalries.

I'd break down the best rivalries of the Super Bowl Era like this ...

Top 5 regular season rivalries
5. Rams v. 49ers - I could have named a few others in this spot, but went with this old NFL rivalry
4. Browns v. Steelers - very strong 'neighborhood' rivalry with stong fan bases
3. Raiders v. Chiefs - bitter AFL holdover rivalry - Chiefs v. Broncos and Bronc's v. Raiders also considered
2. Bears v. Packers - arguably the greatest rivalry in pro fooball history
1. Cowboys v. Redskins - Both teams with multiple Super Bowl wins, best overall rivalry of the SB Era

Top 5 playoff rivalries
5. Oilers v. Steelers - very short lived, but intense
4. Cowboys v. 49ers - have had numerous compelling playoff games
3. Cowboys v. Steelers - Super Bowl rivals
2. Patriots v. Colts - strong modern day playoff rivalry

And even then it was the most intense rivalry in the NFL. They both sucked a lot after Lombardi left, but since the mid-80's one or both teams have been fairly competitive. And I thought we were talking about the entire history of the NFL, where the Packers lead with 12 titles and the Bears are second with 9.

I think it's beyond wack to make a Top 10 all-time rivalry list and have Dungver v. Cleveland ahead of GB v. Chi.

Gotta side with Goobs on this. Even when Chicago/GB or Dallas/Foreskins were sucking cack, their games always had the smell of rivalry. I'd make my arguments for the Boys/Skins being #1, but could easily listen to the same argument of GB/Chicago.

Honestly the biggest rivals for the Patriots in my opinion are the Dolphins and Jets. Growing up as a kid the Dolphins were the most hated and despised. In more recent times the animosity and games played betwen the Pats and Jets is unreal.

I like beating the Colts and all, but a rivalry I would say no.....

True- I went to every Mule game at Arrowhead between 2003-2006 (all Chief WINS, BTW- they're now 8-0 against the Donks when I'm there) and at every one there was always multiple fistfights, LOTS of crazy vulgar smack-talking, and even some of the ladies were throwing haymakers at each other (got to break one of them up personally :wink: ). I've said it before and I'll say it again....I hate the Donkeys with every fiber of my being and they can fuck off and die. :twisted:

Yeah, even in the suck years for both teams, thier games were like Army/Navy games now. And any Army/Navy "fan" don't read too much into that. I'm just talking about two teams that suck who lay it all out on the field. If that ain't an intense rivalry, I don't know what is. Also throw in the Border War teams for teams that suck who leave it on the field.

Obviously rivalries are made when both teams are very good. Many of these rivalries are better as memories than they will play out in the next couple of years.
