Question about the new Napster

Is Napster still a peer to peer file sharing service or does it now offer a library of CD quality music that you can download? I thought the peer to peer thing was pretty epic because it allowed you access to music that was almost impossible to find otherwise. The downside was that a lot of the stuff I downloaded was of piss poor quality (low sample rates, etc.) which blew fucking goat nuts if I was planning on putting it on CD or putting it on the air. $15 a month would be a steal if I knew that I'd be downloading CD quality tunes, but fishing through tons of shittily recorded tracks is pretty fucking UnWAR.

We could have quite the troll-to-troll file sharing network. Sure, it wouldn't be all instant and whathence, but I've got a feeling that the group of us have an incredibly diverse and DEEP fucking collection of shit.

I think we should have a "Looking for..." thread and just maybe help each other out a little bit. I mean, ummm, as long as it's legal and all.

The only Nitzer Ebb I have are "Ebbhead" and "That Total Age" so I can't help you.

I haven't heard many good things about Napster. The quality is definitely not cd quality. That term gets thrown around way too much, and if you have any kind of discerning ear you'll be able to tell the difference immediately. Also, when you end your subscription you won't be able to listen to the songs you've already downloaded unless you burn them to cd and re-rip them, causing a further loss of quality.

A group of us from another message board started out own Direct Connect hub. We share roughly 1000gb of music amongst ourselves. We could set up something similar for this bunch, but it would only be worthwhile if enough people are really serious.

also Napster ain't exactly indie friendly and if there's something that's available in the UK that you want,that song has to have an american rights holder(a us deal)

So is it possible to just set up some sort of server that we can access via FTP and upload and download as we want? This way we won't have to connect to each other. Does that make sense?

One of my IT geek buddies has a FTP set up that several of us use. 320 gigs of harddrive, or something like that. Boatload of MP3's fit on 320 gigs. Literally thousands and thousands and thousands of tunes. Since my DSL got upgraded to 3 gig down/768 up, it's most functional. Works pretty well for us, but there's no way this group of dipshits would pull it off.

If gmail allowed slightly bigger attachments, it might be the way to go for this group. Someone get on Yahoo's shit, and make it happen. Tell them we need 20 meg attachments.

And any sort of MP3 is "CD quality?" Huh? Lossy formats don't lend themselves to music very well.

But if someone wants to pony up for server space for an FTP, I might use it. Not too worried about it, since A) I have REAL friends and stuff, and B) Most of you have pretty atrocious taste in music anyway.

It would be cool to check out y'all's favorite local bands, though.

An ftp server is easy to set up. However, I'm not about to do it because it goes against my ISP's terms of service. The setup we use is DC++ which allows for secure sharing.

Try YouSendIt. They allow files up to 1GB which can be downloaded 25 times. That would work for a small group like this.

Agreed, although LAME encoded mp3s are pretty close to it, at least when you're listening on something with less-than-perfect sound, like an iPod.

My favourite local band this week is The Summerlad. You might even like their song "Vallée of Cobras".

At least in radio, a bitrate of 128 or greater is generally acceptable for on-air use. I rip most of my home stuff at 192 which is REAL close to "CD quality". Still gives you a lot of the original depth.

FM radio doesn't have nearly the frequency range that a cd does. Everything above 15kHz is cut off much like an mp3.

Myself, I use Chris Myden's method to create great sounding mp3s.
