Okay, I guess. They definitely wanted to show you the relationship between the media and the politician with regard to Streep and Cruise's roles. I think with Cruise's role, they wanted to expose a right winged old skool conservative doing whatever it takes to win the war on terror.
With Streep, the director wanted to show that she waasn't buying what Cruise was telling her. She wanted to spin it into another Vietnam tactic.
The movie pretty much told us what we already know about the newer generations.
