Family cell phone plans.

Post by smackaholic »

Now that lil' miss smackaholic has joined the workforce (mcdonalds) I am finally going to give in and get her a cell phone.

At 16 years 9 months, she is the oldest person in Ct and possibly the entire U&R to not yet have one, or so she tells me.

Like other teens, she "needs" text capability.

The OL and I have pay as you go tract phones, which, is the way to go, imo, if you just want a cell for when you honestly can't wait to get to a land line.

So, the question is, do we just keep ours and get her something cheap with text capability or should we just go with a family plan with minimal peak minutes and texting?

I'd like to hear what you family types have and what you pay, except for phoenix rob. I hate that fukker and don't care what his loser kids use.

Just get her an add-on for your family plan.
But...what do I know? I think you should ask RtS. If there is a schweet phone plan, then you can bet he's got the info.

Ditch the landlines. They're so 20th Century. Get a family plan.

Mrs. Rumps wants to ditch the landlines, but I am paranoid about that. Hurricanes could knock out a network longer than a landline down here.

got that right--plus I have my DSL. I have no problem with having both a cell and land line.

Ditching landlines is a bad idea, especially if you have kids.

I would agree if the kid didn't already have a cell phone.

I hate cell phones. Mrs. Rumps and I are currently on an expired contract with Sprint. I could care less what I have. Mrs. Rumps wants to explore every option and go cell phone shopping in every fucking kiosk looking for the best cell phones and best deals. Shit, if you gave me a rotary cell phone with a rolodex attached to it, I'd use it.

A teenager - and you want to have minimal peak minutes? Yeah, that'll work.

Try and find out what company her friends use. Several of the major carriers offer unlimited cel to cel anytime minutes. If you get limited peak minutes and go over them, they rape you with a leap to anywhere from .45 to .75 per minute. My bro in law got a $300 bill one month when his regular bill was around $49. His teenage daughter yapped her way up to $300. He switched her over to a phone card for emergencies only so she can't talk very much to her brainless friends any more. She's pretty much hating life now, but she spent all the time I ever was over there talking and texting, so maybe now she'll go outside occasionally.

Everyone in my company has verizon cel service. I have 1300 anytime minutes, 200 texts and unlimited free verizon cel to verizon cel minutes for $79 a month. We use the cel to cel exclusively for inter office calls which saves us quite a bit over what we'd pay for toll free or landline minutes. I rarely use the text feature except when I'm in a bad cel area and need to communicate. For whatever reason texting works most of the time almost anywhere.

The big carriers usually have either unlimited texting or a plan with a lot of texts. You'll need it. You'd be surprised how quickly she'll burn thru those, too, and if you go over the limit, it's usually 10-15 cents per text. 20 - 30 texts a day isn't uncommon for kids, especially girls.

No shit. My daughter averages about 900 a month. Had to go with the $9.99 a month plan for 1,000 free text messages.

We gave up our landline years ago. No need to be paying for something you don't really need. We use T-Mobile. 3 phones, unlimited minutes and free long distance for about $90 a month.

Exactly. With a teenager, you have only two options: either a prepaid cell phone which forces her to be judicious about calls, texting, etc., or give in and get a max plan.

My daughter is 7, and the heartfelt requests for a cellphone have started already. :?

Mrs. Rumps gets about 30-40 texts a day from her cheerleaders, so I have a good idea about these teenage girls yapping and texting up their parents minutes.

Just as an FYI when phone lines both cell and land are down, texting often still gets thru. Just an FYI as my wife's company (insurance) has emergency plans that have most communication by text. She was able to text after Rita and Katrina from their mobile claims trailers even when cell and land lands were down.
