I figured another Sooner would beat me to this, I just can't let it go unannounced.
I want to give a personal story first, then I will give a couple of links if anyone has time to look at them.
When I was a senior in high school I was vice president of the student council, we were looking for someone to give the commencement speech at our graduation. On a whim I suggested that we contact Jack Mildren since he was running for Lieutenant Governor of the state of Oklahoma. It was a little of a plolitical move on my part and I admit a little selfish being an OU fan.
The teachers had me call his office and as an 18 year old I was nervous as hell, I spoke to his secretary and left a message to ask him to speak at our graduation. I never thought I would hear a word from it being I went to a little piss ant town with the population of 500 people.
I guess I was in class when his office called back, the teachers came to me and said he agreed to come speak. I just could not believe it.
So when graduation day came and the God Father of the wishbone, Mr. Jack Mildren came into our measly little town and walked into our pathetic theatre/cafateria and delivered an elegant speech, well... I was in awe and I was flattered to shake his hand.
As promised the links.

Rack you Mo!
I was scared of Jack also but for a very different reason. That guy was a great wishbone QB and I was sure he'd win that '71 game with the determination he played with that day. Hell he wasn't supposed to chuck the rock, but he hit Jon Harrison for a TD and a huge clutch gain in that game that wasn't supposed to even be a threat. Two plays that really nearly won that game for OU.
He was a gamer, tough as nails, and seemed like a great guy.
RIP Mr. Mildren.....this Cornhusker always respected you and will never forget you.
 Hey, he can run some fullback dives with Leon.

Re: Jack Mildren
Jon Harrison is a very underrated Sooner. My uncle is the guy that Mildren beat out for the QB job (before the bone). Unc played behind all Big 8 QB Bobby Warmack and All-American Mildren.
Outside of the Godfather status, Mildren was one of the first of the bluest of Texas blue chips of that era to cross the river and play at OU. Legacy that still exists today.
RIP Jack. One of the best. some clips of the OU bone with JM against UT in 71 (48-27, OU), fittingly, the clip ends with a Mildren TD.

Re: Jack Mildren
My father knew Jack personally and was pretty upset about this. The wrestling team used to live with the football players in the same dorm at that time. He has a lot of stories about him, Jack, Terry Pullman (All American wrestler), and Mike Mclaughlin (backup TE) doing all kinds of crazy crap while in college.
Sad time in Soonerland. :(

Re: Jack Mildren
btw, sooner brethren, you should own a copy of this book: it's the Daily Oklahoman Sunday clippings and depth charts from the 70's compiled by the soonerstats guy. if what he says is true, there are only about 50 copies left. best 20$ you'll ever spend. this is the real shizz. (yeah I know the DO sucks out loud). you will thank me for this later. i have no connection with Danny Hartley or soonerstats.com but i can quote one of my Penn State buddies who said: "damn, i wish we had a book like this."
