The Navy turned a blind eye to drugs for decades, right up until the point that a couple of gunners mates splattered themselves and two other guys all over the mediterannean by loading a 5" gun incorrectly. They ran tests on some of the remaining body scraps and found out that they were all stoners. Pretty soon they were testing everybody all the time.

They were doing pretty serious drug testing all along (I lost my LPO, who was in line to make CPO, to a positive marijuana test in '87), at least for the time I was in. During Vietnam, they pretty much turned a blind eye to it, but there was a post-Vietnam CNO who decided to make it a priority. I can't remember exactly who that was right now.

I always understood the tipping point for drug testing in the military to be the crash in the Nimitz. This little blurb from Wiki should jog the memory.

In the following year, one of Nimitz's EA-6B Prowlers crash-landed on her flight deck, killing 14 crewmen and injuring 45 others. The crash happened when the USMC airplane came in high and right, missing the last arresting cable by several feet, while ignoring a wave-off command. Forensic testing indicated several of the deceased enlisted crewman tested positive for marijuana while the officers onboard the crashed plane were never tested, putting the blame for the accident on the deck crew instead of the pilot. The official determination was that the accident was the result of drug abuse by the enlisted crewmen of the Nimitz, this conclusion coming despite the fact that every death occurred in the impact of the crash and not one crew member was killed fighting the fire. Due to this incident, then President Ronald Reagan instituted the "Zero Tolerance" policy across all of the armed services - which started the mandatory drug testing of all US service men and women.

I was under the impression that the big push on drug screening was a result of a nasty carrier accident where the investigation revealed that more than a few involved might have been stoned.

I think at the time it was a good thing. The military did need cleaning up. Trouble is, they take it wayyyyyyy to far.

The current policy follows the same dumbfukkkk guidlines that we use in fighting terrorism. It is 100% random. A 26 year Navy Captain on shore duty is subject to the exact same testing as a 19 year old flight deck ape. Doesn't matter that the captain has a 26 year record of passing tests. Doesn't matter that nobody cares if he's getting stoned, since he's not putting anyone in danger. Doesn't matter that the 19 year old IS in a position where being stoned could get him dead. Doesn't matter that he is far more likely than the captain to actually get stoned.

Nope, none of this matters. We have to be fairrrrr, you see. Can't show any favoritism.

So, we spend countless millions every year doing this shit for nothing. It makes about as much sense as having 79 year old mildred take off her sneakers before boarding her flight to miami.

There should be drug testing for city bus drivers or airline pilots. We should not be drug testing an E-5 cook on shore duty.
