I think we can all agree they are.

And despite popular SoCal opinion, fish don't really come from "the fish store."

They in fact come from the water.


And well... you have to catch them before you can eat them... or someone does. They don't jump in the boat for you, unless you're Boating Under The Influence on Nehalem Bay.

I could give a flying rat's ass about your close encounters with a feathery jig or whateve the fuck you're babbling about.

This forum is about preparing the shit and eating it.

And anything else that I say it's about, BTW.

I don't think too much of the product that they carry in my local "fish store" comes from some drunkass U&Ler dropping a maribou in Nehalem Bay, do you?

Far as I'm concerned your subject matter here is about as relevant to the forum as "5 good ways to slaughter a hog" or " optimal blade angle for furrowing your bean field".

Camping this weekend. For tomorrow nights din din I am doing pork tenderloin stuffed with cornbread/apple/fennel dressing. Roasted tomatoes with italian herbs and parm. Plenty o beers for dessert.


I'll also be fishing for some non-trout species. Something I dont do much anymore. But mustard battered walleye fillets are good so I'll eat em if we catch em.

Never eaten bugeye... even though our polluted turdpond, The Creek (Columbia), has the biggest ones in the world... even though they've only been in there 20-25 years (non-native, probably illegally introduced).


Maybe I'll whack one of those someday. No limit on the fuckers in The Creek, either -- Fish and Feathers would just as soon they were gone.

I went and hooked me some New York steaks yesterday on sale at the local meat store. Damn, those suckers are almost as easy to catch as the salmons are. Prolly team 'em up with some locally grown Idaho bakers and a nice green salad grown in the vegetable section. Oh yeah, and a bottle of a nice Alexander Valley cab vinted here at the local Costco.

Cab... yummy.


Did I mention there's a very small cab/zin vineyard going in at Casa de Dins?


Like 25-30 vines by the times it's fully planted.


Thoroughly inappropriate climate for it, BUT...

It's such a small area, it can be micromanaged. Has a reflective wall to the north, and figure the ground can be covered with black weed barrier to jack the root temps up a little.

Not practical on any sort of commercial level, but theoretically do-able on such a small scale. And if things go according to plan, the longer daylight hours might be the ticket to some crazy fruit.


This hobbyist winery has been dubbed "The Experiment Winery."


Probably doesn't hurt that a professional enologist is overseeing the operation.


We'll see in 3-4 years how it works out. If not, I guess Pinot grafts it is... like Pinot os hard to come by around here.

Last night:

Grilled shrimp and scallop skewers, seasoned with minced garlic, Cholula Chili-Lime seasoning and EVOO. Calimyrna figs, heirloom tomatoes and baby lettuce greens; basmati rice. First time trying the Cholula and I must say it was very good.

Mmmm... figs.

Tonight's dinner:

carne asada
fresh salsa
tortillas
refried beans
salad with romaine hearts, heirloom tomatoes, grilled radicchio (left over from last night), and roasted garlic/balsamic dressing

The only thing that's missing is guacamole. I forgot to buy an avocado and just don't feel like going back out. Plus, the husband doesn't care about avocados at all (sad!) so I'm the only one missing out. Oh well!

Doesn't care about avocados?

He must be from out of state or something.

The best avos going are Reed, and they're in season here now. Softball sized giants with the best flavor going. I guess you almost never see them outside SoCal because they're only available for a few months each year.

Tonight's dinner:

Microwaved chicken breasts (yes they are excellent this way if you do it right - and it's really easy)
Steamed brocolli
Baked yams
