Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
I don't know if its a bad pick, but there's no doubt its a desperate one. Apparently the GOP really feared what happened in the DNC.
They apparently don't think McCain can win if they can't divide the democrats on the sexism issue.
I think they would have had better luck peeling off feminists with Hutchison, though. With Palin's youth, inexperience and beauty (got to admit, she's a MILF), the democrats will quickly spin it as the more beautiful woman passing over the more experienced one.
He's sure not playing it safe, though. Its either going to be a homerun, or a strike out, and I think we'll know relatively soon who is going to win this election by the response she gives McCain with the Hillary feminists.

Or visa versa. Obama's not going to run against inexperience, it just hinders the GOP argument against him to have someone even younger on their ticket. Especially when the top of the ticket is a man who will surpass average male life expectancy early in his first term.Diogenes wrote:

I think the likely explanation is that the GOP felt that the DNC speakers, like Bill Clinton, had made a good enough argument against the experience meme, for Obama, that they didn't feel that line of argument was going to be effective anymore against him anyway. They can't be planning to keep attacking on that.
Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
If McCain gets elected and croaks halfway into his first year, then she'll turn from a VPILF to a PILF.

To get technical, Alaska is no longer the 'least populated state'. On the other hand, Palin actually has substance.
On energy she can speak to ANWR, she's trying to open up natural gas pipeline , she's taken on oil companies and her husband works in the industry.
She's also got a son going to Iraq in contrast to the Obama run-away-first policy.

It doesn't neutralize Biden's son going to Iraq, because its the GOP side that wants to stay there in the first place. And McCain already has a son or two over there in the first place. They aren't going to start playing the "we've got 3 sons over there against your 1" game. Its just a non-issue.

I like the choice. But even if you don't, you have to like the way the Campaign handled DNC week. First announce Friday as the day for the announcment. Then leak that he's made a choice. Then he says he hasn't made a final one. Then officially announce he finally has. Then their releasing a new ad...which basicly says congrats, Barak. Then this.
Keep a media presence without actually doing anything disruptive, then make everyone forget about the idiots on parade rally.

Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
My take for the past couple of months is that McCain will win a close election in November ... if he doesn't step on his dick pretty badly.
Me thinks he stepped on his dick pretty badly here.
We see him working, sure.
Go after the Hillary clan who isn't thrilled with B.O.
And do so with a woman who is a conservative voice, so as not to disappoint the base.
But there are a few problems with the selection.
First, she does nothing for him geographically/electorally.
But more importantly, at McCain's age, the reality that he could die in office is one to take seriously.
So you've got a pretty damn inexperienced (and low national profiled) 44 yr old woman from Alaska who would assume the office of prez of the U.S.
I'm here to tell ya that plenty of folks are gonna have a hard time swallowing that pill.
If I'm a McCain supporter I don't like the pick, sorry.

Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
You know pop, that angle has been covered sort of. If McCain croaks, Palin could always select a "Biden Like" ... in terms of experience as the VP.
Personally I don't think either candidate selects a VP without some ... influence from the party leaders. I think Obama and McCain both selected individuals based on what the party thought best.
Remains to be seen if it was a good idea for either of them.

Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
When I said that 'McCain' steppped on his dick, I mean, of course, 'TEAM' McCain, as you're right, Tom, this choice was certainly not his alone to make.
There are some potential positives that I can see.
For all of B.O.'s endless puking out of the 'change' mantra, when push came to shove on picking a running mate, he went with a classic inside Washington lifer in Biden.
So now here comes McCain selecting a real out-of-the-mainstream vp candidate in Palin.
He gives B.O. a mild facial on that score.
Palin is very bright, well-spoken, energetic and more than a little ... fiesty.
I could see her holding up very well in her debates with Biden.
And it's quite possible/likely that she'll goad the ol' blowhard into flapping his hole into some laughably regretable statements.
I can also see her taking on a bit of the 'attack dog' role in this campaign, slamming both Biden and Obama, and taking great delight in doing so.
Good theatre.
Make no mistake, she is a VERY conservative candidate, and that pleases the base.
The base would prefer an experienced white male candidate, but they can live with her, considering her very conservative basis.
The fact that she has no ties to a currently unpopular president is also a plus, IMO.
It serves to separate McCain some from the idea that it'll be 4 more years of Bush.
And if Palin flashes a shot-or-two of cleavage along the way, all the better for ratings.
... if not my underoos.
See, it's not all doom and gloom for the GOP.

Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
With Palin, we have a candidate who has executive experience. That's something that Obama can't brag. Also, though she is 'inexperienced' in the grand scheme of things, there is a reason why she's insanely popular in Alaska and it's not because she's doing a horrific job. I think that this next week, at the convention, will be telling. I'm very interested in seeing how she does. I have a feeling that she'll do well. Her stances, as yet, are solid, yet not staid. As per 'change', what addresses a switch more: McCain choosing Palin or Obama linking arms with Biden? I think it's a brilliant choice and, keeping with an intelligent choice, will do McCain no harm. The VP is not a co-leader. From what I can tell, their job is not to set policy, but rather to help 1) win votes and 2) serve as desired by the president. Heck, Cheney had two exceptional debates in 2000 and 2004, but has he done anything as far as governing in 8 years? I don't think so.

Re: Best choice for McCain's running mate???
It may have been a good read, Neck, but it may also have been ... off base.
I'm not afraid to admit that I might have underestimated the deeply rooted sheeple nature of the voting public.
But I guess time will tell.
A few other positives I see so far for McCain with the Palin selection ...
1. The media has been in love with B.O., in part because of their liberal tendency, but also in part because is ... fresh, young, interesting.
But now we have, in Palin, someone younger, more fresh, and interesting in her own right.
So it blunts some of Obama's 'charm' in that regard, and gives the media someone else to focus on.
2. She's got a lot of the 'every man/woman' feel to her that will resonate with much of middle America.
I think male conservatives LOVE her to death already.
And most female conservatives dig her too.
She'll fire up a lot of women in the middle, just by virtue of having a slit and teets.
3. This young chick from Alaska has, in some respects, more REAL experience than the guy at the top of the other party's ticket.
And that is pert' funnay.
But you know, the 'McCain is the reformer' load of B.S. that she and he are now tossin' around is the biggest load of crappola I think I've ever heard.
McCain ... reformer?? lol
You mean the McCain who voted against the Bush tax cuts?

One heartbeat, Tart, one heartbeat.
McCain will spend the next 2 months running from his immigration stance as far as he possibly can. Texas, Cali, and Arizona are decided so he won't be campaigning in those 3.
Nothing has made me change my ambivalence toward McCain in general, but he did just make the best decision of the latter half of his life.
I promise I won't wish ill of him...or for him... after he takes the oath in January.
No, really, I do. I promise...

I agree that McCain's been awful at times in his past. Lesser of two evils is still evil. However, Palin, from what I can tell, IS the real deal. I too won't wish ill on McCain. Palin came somewhat out of nowhere as did Obama. However, in the past few years, she's actually affected change in Alaska.
However, I have a feeling, as I did that Palin was going to be the VP nominee, that something will happen between now and November that will overwhelmingly shift the election in Obama's behalf. Hope I'm wrong and it's all good, but who knows? We'll see.
God's in control. That's all I know for certain. Peace.
