Called for and converted a 2pt conversion against Purdue...clutch catch by Antonio Brown, I'm sure it'll be on the highlight shows...1:18 remaining

Well, spoke too soon there. Purdue seems to have sealed this one off.

Rack Purdue for answering back with a score and 2 pt. conversion. And, INT on Chippewas' final drive.

Do you think Ferentz is gone after Iowa finishes 6-6 (or worse) this year?

you're right: western/central features better teams. if those four teams were its own league, iowa would have a firm grasp on 3rd place.TheJON wrote:Umm......no.M Club wrote:western/central is michigan's version of the iowa/iowa state rivalry.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
Doubtful. He may be forced to get rid of coaches but I wouldn't think he'd be gone, though if he goes 6-6 I think he should be. That said, no one really knows Gary Barta yet as he hasn't had to make a decision like this.Goober McTuber wrote:Hey, at least my suggestion had some semblance of truth to it.TheJON wrote:Ok, how about this: You're better off committing suicide than continuing on with your pathetic life.Goober McTuber wrote: OK, how about this: Western/Central is Michigan's version of the Iowa/Iowa State rivalry, but with better football teams.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
Another 6-6 season for Iowa means they've officially become a totally mediocre program, a fourth straight season right around the .500 mark is the epitome of mediocrity. You don't pay a guy $3million to be meh. He needs to produce or be gone IMO.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
Most AD's give a coach a last chance by forcing the firing of the coordinators and if that doesn't work, the head coach is next. My guess is that is what will happen. Have no inside info, it's just a "gut feeling"!!Danimal wrote:Another 6-6 season for Iowa means they've officially become a totally mediocre program, a fourth straight season right around the .500 mark is the epitome of mediocrity. If you ask me, Kirk needs to be gone if we go 6-6 or 7-5. I know we're young, but that schedule is ridiculously easy. Not as easy as Notre Dame's schedule, but still very mediocre. Schedule last year was weak too and we went 6-6. 2 years ago the schedule was decent (not great) and we went 6-7. Something has to change. Either Kirk needs to start winning NOW or he needs to go. It's really that simple.
I will say this, if Kirk has a bad year and gets fired, the incoming coach is going to enter a very good situation because this is one of the youngest teams in the country. We have very few seniors playing on either side of the ball. But I do expect Shonn Greene (who is 23 years old) to turn pro after this year.
That said, we're going 9-3 this year so Kirk isn't going anywhere. But if he decides to make decisions based on "gut feelings" again, he should be fired on the spot.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
if Ferentz is still under contract, .500 is risky business for an AD.
you can't really buy him out, hire another hot prospect at real money...and be as close to 3-9 as 9-3.
the way an AD thinks is "maybe Kirk will pull it out, or beat Ohio State...". another 6-6 year with fan support is OK in AD money world. 4-7 is different.
no offense Jon, but it's Iowa. not Alabama or Ohio State or Texas. Even those clubs lived with crap for a few years.

Iowa has as loyal and supportive of a fan base as any team in the country. We also have money. More money than most schools. How do you think we can afford to pay a coach $3 million per year when he hasn't even won a BCS bowl?King Crimson wrote:if Ferentz is still under contract, .500 is risky business for an AD.

Fact of the matter is this program is built to a level where .500 records should be unacceptable......especially 3 years in a row......when the coach is making $3 million per year.
Kirk should consistently be going 8-4 and getting to New Year's Day bowls if he wants to earn that salary. But he isn't going to do that if he keeps having these "gut feelings".

you say this quite often and i think it's utterly stupid. that iowa pays ferentz all that dosh to lose as many games as he wins doesn't bespeak the largesse in your bank account; it merely suggests whoever signed off on that idea must be sarah palin's last born son. there's nothing special about iowa's ledger sheet that 20 other schools couldn't match that salary if the will was there. also, $3 mill is still too much to pay out for 8-4, especially with the joke ooc schedules that are now the norm.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
What is so "utterly stupid" about what I said? I agree with you 100%. It's insane to pay him that money. Yes, he earned a hefty paycheck a few years back for what he accomplished- not gonna disagree with that. But no way can any coach earn that pay without getting to the BCS regularly regardless of what school you're at.M Club wrote:you say this quite often and i think it's utterly stupid. that iowa pays ferentz all that dosh to lose as many games as he wins doesn't bespeak the largesse in your bank account; it merely suggests whoever signed off on that idea must be sarah palin's last born son. there's nothing special about iowa's ledger sheet that 20 other schools couldn't match that salary if the will was there. also, $3 mill is still too much to pay out for 8-4, especially with the joke ooc schedules that are now the norm.TheJON wrote:Iowa has as loyal and supportive of a fan base as any team in the country. Who signed off on that? Well, that would be Stanford's current AD- Bob Bowlsby. He is a fucking moron and Stanford deserves him (and Jim Harbaugh). He refused to fire Steve Alford and called us fans "rank amateurs" because we were smarter than him and no more about Alford than he does. But that's another argument for a different board.....
But with all that said, Iowa can afford it. It took the athletic department about 5 minutes to fund a $90 million renovation of Kinnick Stadium a couple of years ago. We'll always be able to pay our coaches as well as almost any school. That doesn't justify Ferentz' being paid $3 million and only making it to 1 BCS bowl, but if they university can afford it than what the heck, right?
Re: Rack the Chippewas
it's more so the "we're iowa" attitude that permeates your posts whenever you talk about ferentz's salary. technically speaking, yes, iowa has more financial resources than most other schools, if we're talking about the mac. but just within the big ten, without having to travel far, there's nothing that distinguishes you from michigan, ohio state, penn state, and wisconsin. those schools could outspend iowa if need be, but the fact of the matter is they have better coaches for less money. throw in the money other schools' ads and boosters have and you'll begin to see the unlevel playing field doesn't benefit iowa the way you posit.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
You couldn't be any further from the truth. Iowa has the money to compete with just about anyone. Our poor athletic department somehow managed to fund a $90 million renovation to Kinnick, a $30 million renovation to Carver, pay our football coach $3 million, pay our basketball coach well above average salary.......all within the last couple of years.
Putting Wisconsin on that list is just ridiculous. You're so far off if you think Wisconsin has more coin than the U of I. It's not even close. If we want Bielema, we'll go get him. He's a Hawkeye and we've got more money than they do to spend on coaches. Don't mistake them having more recent success than us on the field for having more money.
Our booster's have a lot more money than you think. When our AD wants money, he doesn't ask for it, he just says give me some money and we pay him.
I'm not trying to argue we have an elite football program in terms of success on the field, but you're 100% wrong if you don't think we have as much or more money at our disposal as 95% of the schools out there. We'll always be able to compete with ANYONE financially for a coach. That includes the NFL. Why do you think Ferentz never took an NFL job when he he was given many opportunities to do so (ie Jacksonville in 2002)?? Because we can match whatever they're offering.
You might say "well, we're overpaying for a coach and other schools don't have to". True. But last time I checked, in order to pay a coach that kind of money you actually have to already have that money. Right? The one advantage Iowa is always going to have over most schools is money and fan support. We sell out every week and we've got money. We may not have a great recruiting pipeline but we can overcome that with our ability to pay top dollar for coaches and we can attract certain athletes that wouldn't normally consider playing football in the state of Iowa because of our fan support and facilities.
If we didn't have the fan support and the money we have we'd finish at the bottom of the Big-10 every year. I can guarantee you that. If you want proof of that, just look at Iowa State. They don't have money, they don't have great facilities, and they don't sell out their relatively small stadium on a consistent basis. They've consistently been finishing at the bottom of the Big-12/8. We would be Iowa State without the fans and money.

Re: Rack the Chippewas
well then, i'd love to see the ledger sheets. from what goober has said, wisco's athletic dept. is independent of the university. i'm not sure about iowa's. and if you're going to pull out numbers: michigan is dropping over $200 million on their stadium expansion, pays about $2 mil for their coach, and another $2.5 for his buyout, so the point remains: just because iowa's willing to spend that money does it mean they have a financial advantage over the osu's, floridas, usc's, texas, and oregons of the world. i don't by any means think iowa is poor in any regard [ad budget, boosters], but i think you're silly to keep pretending they're anything special in that regard.
