Booting from CD on startup
the boot from cd isnt showing, is there anything i can press to boot from cd, or to give me a option to boot???
upon reboot you should see something that says "Press xxx to enter setup"
usually it's Del,if it's a gatewat it's F2,Compaq F10.
enter setup and tab through the windows with your<-->^ v arrows looking for something along the lines of Boot,Boot Order,1st Boot Device etc
make your CD your 1st boot device hit F10 and Yes.
make sure you have a bootable disc in and it should boot from CD now.

If you still don't see it, sometimes its the CD's problem. May just need to get another one. It could also be a problem with your CD player so you could try the CD in another computer to see if it will work in there.
Thats assuming that the boot from CD feature is enabled and you do what DiT said above.

Sounds like a spyware infection maybe?
Are you trying to re-install from scratch?
Linux autoboot cds can be great for initially looking at the file structure and formating the drive. You can also get DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) to just nuke the HD and then reinstall with the windows CD. (Hint: DBAN uses the DOD standard to clean your HD so not even DiT can recover your credit card numbers from it)
Alternatively, you could manually clean the machine. You would have to look in the registry for the RUN and AutoRun and RunOnce keys and look for extra junk that aren't normal programs. You can also check under the Start menu, Programs for Autostart items that might be extras.
Incidentally the little boxes mean that the word is written in a font that the PC doesn't have. Just another reason to believe that its a virus or spyware.
You should download Ad-aware and spybot S&D, update their definitions and run them to clean your PC of spyware. Do both because they catch different stuff. (hint: probably should switch to 'Safe Mode' to run these checks so download first, update then reboot into safe mode.) Also an anti-virus check is a good idea. There are a number of free choices or go out and spend $40 and get Norton. Again, update the rules and run search for virii.
If you think you have corrupt windows files, you might want to run the windows program that can re-load corrupt dll files and such. You may or may not need the windows CD for this. Go to Start, Run. Then enter 'CMD /x' without the quotes. Hit enter and then type 'SFC /scannow' into the Command prompt. This might take a while. If it finds stuff it doesn't like, it will probably ask for your windows CD to repair it.
You might also consider locking down the machine so they can't install all kind of shit. If you live close, it might be easier to just go over once in a while to install new programs and update their PC, check for virii and spyware instead of doing full installs every other months.

My daughter caught some nasty shit. really nasty shit. I ran through the gamut of spyware programs and none cleaned it. Norton found one virus, PCCillin home thing found two more it couldn't clean. Basically I was locked out of the registry, the CD got shitcanned, it renamed the drives, locked msconfig, and killed the boot sector.
I had to take the fucking drive out to format it in another PC and reload windows. The CD never came back up, so I'm not 100% sure they were mutually exclusive problems.
I'd also load javacool's spyware blaster on that machine. It'll help prevent some things.
