Anyone Other Than Cornhusker Remember These?

Seems like I remember my Grandfather telling me a story about a gas station once. Something about putting a nickel in a Coke machine and a glass bottle came out and then you left the empty next to the machine in some rack. Didn't mention anything about football cards though or I might have paid more attention.

Is this the same time when cars had that handle coming out of the front bumper that you had to turn to start the car? :D

i remember those bottle vending machines. you had to pull. I'm 38.

but, you know it was in Oklahoma...not exactly the forefront of consumer technological advance.

The biggest "remember back when" thing for me has to do with technology.

When I was 6 or 7, I remember helping my dad carry his database to the computer center. Yep, that DB consisted of piles of punchcards that he would feed into a huge machine. Or, it would be those huge reel-to-reel tapes. The mainframe in that computer center took up the entire basement level. They've converted that space into offices now. The computing power of that behemoth is probably represented in one of the many desktops that sits in his office.

I definitely miss the feel of Beaver Stadium from those days. It used to be a pretty spartan experience (EASY, crown!). The only voice coming over the loudspeaker was the spotter, "CURT WARNER the ball carrier - 2ND DOWN". Now, there are full-bore marketing campaigns taking place at 145 decibels on the jumbotrons. That's not an improvement, in my book.

I remember my dad used to always use binoculars to watch the play, lots of folks did. You don't see that as much with the jumbotrons.

The one year I seriously got into collecting football cards happened to be 1984, and I had several Topps™ Curt Warner rookies. I remember thinking they were going to be worth a mint after he made the Pro Bowl his rookie year. The Eric Dickerson rookies from that year also didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I've long since sold my Elway rookie, but I think I might still have a Marino...
