The Blackshirts are back

my favorite:

Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini told the Lincoln Journal Star the decision was made to reward the performance of the Cornhuskers in their 45-35 victory over Kansas last week. Nebraska notched five sacks in that comeback victory.

woah, a whole 5 sacks, vs a team with no running game and has to throw every down.

422 yards and 35 pts given up, fuck yeah , the black shirts are back.

Pelini is a jerkoff, NU hired the wrong guy, at least Gill and his Bison team didn't roll over to Mizzou, they played them tough 3 1/2 quarters. NU could barely play 1 quarter before being bent over.

Keep Bo, he will bring you to the promise land.

sin,

Sad day.

If it works for him then he did the right thing. However, for the rest of us, the Blackshirts are now right up there with a degree from Nebraska. Both are worthless.

Yes he is and yes he will be and yes you too. Find me someone who won't be.
Doesn't take away from the fact they were successful, regardless of when they lived or how dead they are.

Cornhusker,

There are plenty of very successful people who never finished or even set foot on a college campus. Not sure how my income is relavent to this discussion. But yes, your athletic success laps that of RICE prolly 10 times over.

However, the fighting for the prop 48s and then using the past success of prop 48s and how many of them graduated, and graduated with high GPAs cheapens every Nebraska degree. Kids that can't qualify for some Jr colleges can not only graduate from NU, but do so with honors proves that. Just like handing out blackshirts to a defense that just gave up 35 points. Are we to believe this unit is as good as those in years past?

So run all the athletic smack you want on me and RICE, doesn't make either statement less true.

Well I really don't know the percentage of actual prop 48s that graduated with honors verse traditional qualifiers, if any. It was for the most part to get acceptance in school, and the reason NU supported it from an athletic standpoint, was due to the small population base; thus the small talent pool to chose from locally. It was to provide access to a greater number of possible players. Of course it was played off as "giving opportunity" to the less fortunate financially, assuming finances and educational success were hand in hand. I know spin when I hear it so were on base there.

It's in the past as NU as well as the rest of the Big 12ers have increased qualifing standards since the conference's birth.
It's a moot point today. I guess I'd like to have an example of a kid that couldn't qualify for JC that was accepted at NU. Not sure who that might have been?

As far as the Blackshirts being handed out post 35 points, have you seen the scores of an average Big 12 game this year? Holding someone not named Iowa St or Colorado to 35 points is pretty much a success story as strange as it is.
Look around the nation, I think it's safe to say offenses are well ahead of defenses in CFB at this point in time.

As good as past defenses...no, but to use your criteria, no Blackshirts should ever be handed out if they aren't equal to say, the '95 defense?

sure, it's easy to scoff (and it is mildly questionable given the blackshirt tradition)... but NU has two winnable but very important games left. at KSU and CU in Lincoln. win both of those and the Huskers are 8-4 with some "momentum", finishing conference play with 3 wins. an 8 win bowl slot is significantly better than the 6-7 range, most of the time. 8 wins also further distances NU from the CU/KSU 5-6 win group in the North and, with a win over KU, alongside the Jayhawks in the "not Missouri" 2nd tier of the North.

3 months from now, 8 wins is looking a helluva lot better than 7....and gives Pelini some boost recruiting (particularly head to head with CU for some guys) and gives his "rebuilding" program some instant cred (especially against Hawkins, who is in his 3rd year without a winning season...whereas not so long ago CU fans were thumping their chests after signing D. Scott etc).

it's goofy, sure, but Pelini is playing for the rest of the season and using a little motivational ploy to try and get his guys on board.

Cornhusker,

I agree that it is in the past, but that is in no part thanks to Nebraska. NU fought that almost to the death of the proposed conference. But I should ammend my statement to say pre '99.

Also, note where I said I hope it works for him. I do, as King Crimson pointed out it is an internal ploy and if they win out all the better for them. But, they just don't have the same meaning as they previously did. And what if the Texas defense holds Kansas to 14, 17 or even 21 points, and Missouri does the same. That 35 the blackshirts just gave up won't look so great. Just sayin'.

Your spot on KC about Pelini, he's played the season as 3 games post the OU beatdown, and what I like most is the team responds to him in lock step. Giving out the Blackshirts now was the best time he could have done it. They know how 8-4 would be a win for the program and to steal a bowl win would be a big step and put them in the Top 25 at seasons end. That said, I'm sure they'll get KSU's best shot.

Callahan lost his players and the team quit more times than not last year, so it refreshing to see effort no matter what the circumstances.

Lefty,
I know this article is a little lengthy, but I found a guy that was a Prop 48 academic All Big 8.
Please take the time to read. I think you'll find that a least one guy made the most of an opportunity that he otherwise might not have gotten.
Thanks,
CH

Great story and I am really happy for that guy. My problem is he had no business going to NU at all. Playing D1 college football isn't a right, rather it should be an honor. Dude should have gone to a JC and then earned his way to NU instead of what happens all over the country.

Just glad to see that "Prop 48" is going away.
