Indeed.

One of the legends in Cal sports history....

....he will always be associated with Cal Basketball. He was extremely well loved and respected in the basketball world. From the pros and colleges and even the Olympic ranks, he has done it all. I am really glad they named the floor at Haas after him while he was still alive.

He was a man of great character and one of the best coaches ever, and a great representative of Cal. Rest in peace, Coach Newell.

Cal 73, UCLA 68
Cal 61, UCLA 58
Cal 56, UCLA 50
Cal 60, UCLA 58
Cal 64, UCLA 51
Cal 59, UCLA 47
Cal 53, UCLA 45
Cal 67, UCLA 57

....Pete Newell's last eight games against John Wooden, 1957-60.

His timing was impeccable. Had he hung around for the '60's & '70's, he'd a been just another good coach....

FTFY. Limiting him to a geographic region disrespects his impact on the game. Even if Newell had stuck around for the Gilbert era at UCLA me thinks he would have more than held his own. Newell = basketball genius.
"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. "We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history."
