Even though the Dodgers throw a huge offer at Manny, he's probably going to test the market. I bet Boras will try to ramp up the price on him but he'll stay in L.A.
Cardinals very interested in Holliday
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
Pujols and Holliday could be a devastating duo in the 314.
Cubs, Braves, Cardinals, Astros in the hunt for Peavy
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
Tigers could pursue Furcal or Greene
http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/archives/20 ... t_fur.html
Furcal would be a perfect fit in the leadoff spot and allow them to move Granderson down to the #3 spot in the order. My only fear is Furcal's history of injuries.

Re: Hot Stove '08-09
Quite a bit of a surprise that the thrifty Oakland A's are stepping up and appear to ready to obtain Matt Holliday from the Rockies. It would be the second great young bat to leave at NL to join the AL in the last two offseasons. Miguel Cabrera stepped in and put up MVP-caliber numbers for the Tigers. It's a very un-A's-like move to add a young superstar like this but this definitely puts them back in the discussion for the AL West race. Holliday could be a free agent after this year.

EDIT: The Rockies would receive Huston Street, Greg Smith and Carlos Gonzalez

"Red Sox GM Theo Epstein has apparently targeted Texas catchers Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Taylor Teagarden but has also spoken to Scott Boras, Varitek's agent.
Boras is seeking a deal similar to the four-year $52.4 million deal Jorge Posada signed last winter, the Globe reported."
Yeah... teams will be lining up to give a 37 year old catcher who bats .200 with no power 13 $mil per for the next 4 years... Fucking Boras. :?

Re: Hot Stove '08-09
Boras is on crack if he thinks he can get 'Posada money' for Varitek. I mean, did he watch the playoffs? Other than the home run in Game 6, he was non-existent. Varitek is in the same category as a guy like Pudge...hopes to get paid on what he's done but hardly has anything left in the tank. There was some talk the Tigers were going to talk Varitek since they said they didn't plan on trying to bring Pudge back after the trade to the Yankees. I think it's just a ploy by Boras to bump up the value of Varitek on the open market. I'm sure he can still handle a pitching staff but his bat just isn't what it used to be. I think we saw a lot of the next wave of quality catchers in this year's postseason...Soto, Navarro, Martin, and Ruiz.
Re: Hot Stove '08-09
The Holliday deal is official...
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
They mention in the article that Street may be on the move again however the Rockies appear that they'll be keeping Fuentes either. I wonder who they turn to be their closer. Corpas was a disaster in the start of the season after he had the impressive postseason in 2007. I'd imagine they go with him. The A's had arguably the most automatic reliever this side of Brad Lidge in Ziegler...he seems like a natural to be their closer. Street was very much expendable.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
The more I hear about what the A's plans are for Holliday...they probably won't have him beyond this year given his hefty price tag being a Boras client. They can either let him walk after 2009 and get compensation or they can move him around the deadline to a contender and get a package similar to what the Indians got for Sabathia. Without knowing next year's free agent class, Holliday will probably be among the most coveted if he does hit the market. He'll be 29 after this season...very much in his prime. He'll command big coin with Boras pulling the strings.

Braves appear to be close to acquiring Peavy
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
The Padres would get a good group of young players in return. Hernandez was in the Tigers organization originally. He went to Atlanta as part of the Renteria deal. How awful is that trade looking now for the Tigers with Renteria not likely to return and the Braves can parlay one of the pieces to get a guy like Peavy and the other player (Jair Jurjjens) finished third in the NL Rookie of the Year balloting. Escobar and Hernandez could start for them next year at short and center. Greene appears to be not coming back and the Padres really never had a solid option in center after Cameron left in free agency. I didn't know Jody Gerut was still in baseball until I saw him patrolling center at Petco when they played the Tigers in interleague play.
Angels not expecting to keep K-Rod...will focus on re-signing Teixeira
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
I don't think that's a big surprise. Somebody is going to overpay Rodriguez. My fear is that my Tigers will probably be the suckers to do it. He's a top 5 closer but I watched him crumble under the pressure of the Red Sox series. He'll get you 40+ saves when he stays healthy but if you go to the playoffs, he's just as apt to give up the long ball or lose his control as he is to get you an easy 1-2-3 ninth inning. The Tigers need a steady guy at closer and while Rodriguez is the best guy available, he'll still have his meltdown moments. I think he is the #1 target for the Tigers and come Friday, you'll have to believe they'll be among the group of teams tripping over each other to get him.

T-minus 3-1/2 hours until free agency begins...
A pair of Windy City swaps:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
Swisher seemed to be an odd man out in Chicago and they add a versatile infielder in Betemit. Swisher coming in probably means the end of Jason Giambi in the Bronx. It's ironic that the Yankees pick up a guy name Texeira in the deal considering picking up Swisher probably means they won't be going after Mark Teixeira...even though I don't think the Angels would let him go any ways.
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
Marmol seemed to be their closer in waiting and letting go Wood makes sense with the acquisition of Gregg to go with the young power arms in the bullpen. As for Wood on the open market...he's a major risk if someone wants to pick him up to be their closer. K-Rod, Fuentes, Lyon and even Hoffman are better options if a team wants to sign a closer. Wood to me is a ticking time bomb with that arm of his...it's a matter of time before he breaks down again.

If PUjols doesn't win the MVP, the award is a sham.
Look at Howards numbers, that batting average is a fucking joke. And he should have more HR, rbis, etc playing in that joke of a ball park. He also plays for the better team, his protection compared to Pujols???? Ludwick, Glaus give me a break.
If you can't hit in the .280ish+ range then you shouldnt even be considered an MVP
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/stats/playe ... ds[6619]=1
Pujols numbers are sick, then add in the guys elbow is shredded, and his planter facitis(sp) is brutal, the guy is supermanish!
54 K's is all he had

If Dombrowski can pull this off and get rid of Robertson or Willis' horrible contract...it would be criminal. Lugo really wouldn't be any worse than having Renteria back on the team from a production standpoint. I would rather go after Furcal but if they can make this move and get rid of dead money, I can live with it. Lugo is not all that great with the glove but they can always put in Santiago late in games as a defensive replacement.
I don't think the Sox will take all of Robertson or Willis' contract but if they can get them to eat most of it, it'll be worth it. If it ends up being Willis shipped out...it's terrible return for a guy they gave up so much to get along with Cabrera but at least Cabrera is showing he's going to a franchise player going forward. If they can free up some money, maybe they take a legitmate run at one of the starting pitchers available or be aggressive in the K-Rod sweepstakes. There is also some talk about move Magglio this winter and that would free up some money as well.

I don't disagree with you on Pujols winning the MVP- I compare it to when Howard won it 2 years ago over Pujols despite the fact that Phillies didn't make the playoffs. That being said, that "joke of a ball park" is more fiction than reality.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor
*edit- I'd also like to point out that Howard wasn't even the team MVP- that honor goes to Brad Lidge and I think a case could be made for him being the league MVP. The Phillies would not have been playoffs had Lidge not saved 45-45 in the regular season. His stats are fairly compelling too. If I had a vote I'd still go for Pujols however Lidge will show up with some votes, as he should.

I am not sure how you'd be "getting over" in this deal. You do realize Lugo makes 18 million over the next years, don't you? That's 1 million less than Robertson and only 4 million more than Willis. I don't know about you, but I'd rather take my chances on either pitcher (especially Willis) and hope Farrell can straighten him out. Either way, it's a good gamble for the Sux. They can afford "the financial hit" and Lugo was beginning to turn into "clubhouse cancer guy" towards the end of the season.Shoalzie wrote:If Dombrowski can pull this off and get rid of Robertson or Willis' horrible contract...it would be criminal.

Pedroia wins AL MVP
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... p&c_id=mlb
I thought it would be a close race between him and Morneau and it was. I favored Morneau between the two. Kind of an unsual situation with the Sox and Twins each having a pair of guys in the top 4 in the voting. Usually you have guys from the same team and they'll split votes and cancel each other out but there was some seperation between Pedroia and Youkilis and Morneau and Mauer. Then you have a situation like with Quentin who probably was the MVP in the AL before he was lost for the rest of the season.

Boston deals Coco Crisp to the Royals
http://mlbtr.blogs.sportsline.com/mcc/b ... 7/11782544
Crisp had a pretty good postseason but I think it's safe to say Ellsbury is the long term answer in center. He's still a serviceable player and he'll decent veteran presence on the young Royals. MLB.com is mentioning DeJesus is likely moving to left field and Teahen is on the trading block...the Cubs have expressed interest.

How great would it be for CC to take less money and spurn the Yankees? With Mussina retiring, you have to believe the Yankees are going to be even more aggressive in the free agent pitcher market.

I guess if he's could to get a better contract than the one Cabrera just signed in Detroit, I can see how he'd be interested in joining his hometown team. It wouldn't make the Nationals that much better but they'd be great on the corners with Zimmerman and Teixeira.

The Red Sox very close to signing Junichi Tazawa...
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
It would make sense for him to go to Boston with Dice-K and Okajima already on the team...fellow countrymen. Very intrigued what type of an arm he's got. It could be a very good young rotation with Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K along with perhaps Buchholz and Tazawa. Beckett would be the oldest of the 5...he'll be 29 in May and Dice-K won't be 29 until mid-September.
Looking at the teams they mentioned as other options, you'd think Seattle would've been another logical destination with the first Asian-American as manager and of course Ichiro.

Tigers acquire Gerald Laird from the Rangers for 2 minor league pitchers
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
He's nothing flashy but he won't cost the Tigers very much in the way of salary...made just $1.8 million last year. I don't know anything about the two arms they gave up but they're probably way down the totem pole within the organization. I don't think either guy will breakout like Jurjjens did this year with Atlanta. It's probably a smart move for the Tigers to not overpay for an aging catcher like Varitek or if they ever thought about bringing back Rodriguez. Laird will get the majority of the starts and I'd imagine Dusty Ryan will be the backup. That will allow Inge to stay out in the field...likely as the third baseman with Carlos Guillen making the full-time switch to left field next year. If they can swing the deal with the Pirates to get Jack Wilson.

Also reading on the CBS Sportsline rumor blogs, they are looking at either Kerry Wood or J.J. Putz as an option at closer instead of getting the chase for K-Rod. I'd take Putz between him and Wood...he's a local guy and Wood is just too much of a risk. His arm is a time bomb.

Definitely not shocked about K-Rod going to the Mets...they needed to sure up that bullpen. Also interested in seeing if Sabathia finally signs in the next few days...the Dodgers appear to be in hot pursuit of him.
The K-Rod move and impending departure of Raul Ibanez from Seattle could set the wheels in motion for the Tigers to go after J.J. Putz. Since the Tigers didn't give up either Larish or Joyce to get Jack Wilson, they can flip either of them to get Putz in a trade. If K-Rod is the priced closer available, Putz would be a great consolation prize.

Peavy to the Cubs talk still on...the Phillies could be involved in a 3-way deal. DeRosa may go the Phillies and he can be the fill-in for Utley while he recovers from hip surgery

Hillarious that Peavy is being traded b/c the Padres owner is going through a divorce so he is attempting to de-value his team so his wife won't get any or apart of it in the settlement.

Re: Hot Stove '08-09
Call me naive but I'm honestly surprised he took the Yankees' money rather than playing close to home with the Dodgers or even go back to the Brewers. He's stepping into the fire with this move after playing in cities with mild media coverage and rational fans. It's a huge price for the Yankees but I don't see this blowing up in their face like some of their other free agent pitcher signings in recent years...Sabathia is a proven #1 starter. I'm sure they're going to try to add another arm, sounds like Burnett is a guy they are pushing hard for. They clearly needed a front line starter to close the gap on the Red Sox and to make up for the loss of Mussina.
Re: Hot Stove '08-09
Not really. Dumbfuck should have had his shit in order before he got married, or not even got married at all. Pretty sad for the fans that they will, once again, suffer because ownership is fucking retarded.jiminphilly wrote:Hillarious that Peavy is being traded b/c the Padres owner is going through a divorce so he is attempting to de-value his team so his wife won't get any or apart of it in the settlement.

Nice signing by the Yanks. C.C. is a proven playoff choker and so are they.

Greedy ass Mets...they acquire Putz to be their setup man after signing K-Rod

Smoltz interested in coming back to the Tigers?
http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/arti ... p&c_id=det
Tigers acquire Edwin Jackson from Rays for Matt Joyce...one would assume so the Rays make room for David Price in the rotation
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... p&c_id=det
Rangers interested in Sheffield? (Please take him off our hands, Texas)
http://detroit.tigers.mlb.com/news/arti ... p&c_id=det
The Smoltz move would be intriguing given they don't have a veteran presence in the rotation since Rogers isn't going to be re-signed. He was part of the infamous Doyle Alexander trade in 1987. The Tigers won the East that year but Smoltz has gone on to have a Hall of Fame career in Atlanta. It would be cool to see him come back after all that time and hopefully he's still got something left in the right arm of his where he can help the pitching staff. I don't think he's got any interest in closing again but the Tigers are still in need of a closer with Putz off the market now.
I would love to see them get rid of Sheffield's contract and his attitude. His act has just worn thin...no different than in any other place he's been. He has tendency to wear out his welcome wherever he plays. The Rangers would go from letting a headcase go like Bradley and possibly add a very finicky guy like Sheffield. I'd rather the Tigers give a guy like Larish or Joyce (if either of them aren't traded away) a chance to play on a regular basis. It's obvious they've been working on trimming salary since last year...getting rid of Sheff would only make sense if they aren't able to unload Ordonez.

Red Sox not only going to get Texiera, but they will sign Smoltzy as well.
This solidifies them as the team to beat in baseball.

Stick to your stories about nailing fatties. Much more believable than your sports trolling.Yer a Fuckin Jerkoff wrote:Red Sox not only going to get Texiera, but they will sign Smoltzy as well.

Adding Teixeira will make you better but I don't see why you guys would need Smoltz...maybe other than to replace Wakefield as the token graybeard in that young rotation. Lowell clearly isn't going to be able to stay healthy as your third basemen so you can slide Youkilis over there full time. Your infield could be (around the horn) Teixeira-Pedroia-Lowrie-Youkilis. I can't see Teixeira going to Washington for any other reason than the big contract. He can win in Boston. I think he eventually goes there over going to the hometown team.
I'd love to see the Tigers get Smoltz only if he'd agree to move back to the bullpen because with the addition of Jackson, they have a glut of starters...Verlander, Bonderman, Galarraga, Jackson, Miner, Robertson, Willis...there's no room for him in the rotation unless a couple guys move to middle relief or someone gets traded. Teixeira was a guy we up here were hoping to get for a couple year but since Cabrera is no good at third anymore and is the permanent option at first, we can't have the dream corner infield of Teixeira and Cabrera.

Phillies sign Raul Ibanez
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... &fext=.jsp
The champs add another quality left-handed bat to a lineup that already had two of the premier lefty bats in the NL in Utley and Howard. If he's to be a replacement for Burrell, he's a better pure hitter and isn't an all or nothing from a power standpoint. He'll hit at least 20-25 home runs so it's not a huge drop off because he makes up for it with additional doubles and singles. Burrell drew more walks and had a better on base percentage. Being primarily a pull hitter, Ibanez should benefit from the shorter dimensions in right field in Philly versus Safeco. Ibanez is 4 years older but he's been able to make at least 150 starts in left two of the last three years. Each guy does a few things better than the other guy but not so much that this is an upgrade or a downgrade at the position.
