Re: What's left to burn in California?
Given the number of homes and people in Southern California, the number of burned structures/ displaced people is comparatively miniscule. The media needs to talk about something, though, and in a way to make people listen.
Plus, most of the places that burned are in high risk high brush areas. The homes in the Santa Barbara area that burned are in the foothills surrounded by oak trees and a lot of dry brush where the fire danger is always present, yet that area hasn't burned for decades.
No deaths. 11 injuries. 500 of the 800 homes burned were located in one mobile home park and again, it was located in a foothill and a high brush area.
The drought isn't helping.
No problems for me. It's all in where you buy.
Sorry to Disappoint, Whitey.

As in, when your neighbor loses his job, it's a recession, but when YOU lose your job, it's a Depression.
Sucks for those who lost their homes, but look on the potential bright side. Perhaps some of those homes were in foreclosure, so it's a not so disguised blessing.
There's probably a lot of Cali's who right now are hoping the wildfires provide them an easy way out of in over their head mortgages. You may own a few of those properties, yes?
Re: What's left to burn in California?
Luckily the fires have stayed away from San Diego County this year (so far...).
We've had our share the past few years but, believe it or not, there's still plenty of fuel.
Another believer it or not:
Wildfires are not a new phenomenon in California. The combination of weather, topography and vegetation make fires an inevitable occurance here. Many native plant communities are fire resistant, and some actually depend on fire to germinate. The Native Americans had to deal with it long before any Europeans arrived.
20th and 21st century population growth and patterns have obviously had an effect on frequency and size of wildfires in SoCal, but the truth is that the fires were here long before we were, and will always have to be dealt with. Sort of like tornados in the midwest, floods on the Mississippi, hurricanes along the gulf coast and deadly blizzards in the north.

It takes some doing, but it has been known to happen.

Exactly. In fact fires don't do nearly the damage now acerage wise that they did back in the day. We have a policy of putting out wildfires that didn't exist years ago. Fires were more frequent and as such the fuel didn't build up to these crazy levels we see today. Strangely enough we have more trees today than we did when Columbus was out on his cruise.

Looks like someone here got burned.
Re: What's left to burn in California?
I saw an interview with Arnold Schwartzenegger where he mentioned that global warming is contributing to these fires happening more often. I think there is truth in that. My best wishes to all who are affected by this situation.
