Let's see, you're trained to attack cities in a supersonic fighter jet, and when the extremely expensive killing machine fucks up--and you're over a densely populated suburb of an American city, what do you do?
A) Accept the fact that your responsibility is now as always to protect American lives, and so you steer the ailing craft into an unpopulated area, bravely sacrificing your life so that others may live (and, not be killed by your incompetence, thank you); or
B) You say, aw fuck all, I'm bailing out--just like a Wall St. derivatives expert--with my parachute, let the plane will fall where God and gravity agree, and I'll resume my job after a period of standard whitewashing inquiry.

You don't know?
You make your hand really flat and stick it out the window pointing forward. If you angle your fingers up, the plane goes down. Angle your fingers down, the plane will go up. Right-left. Left-right.
Tell me you knew. We used to do this on car trips years ago.

yes, there are emergency handles to blow the canopy that don't need power to the aircraft. but that's usually for on the ground. if you're going to blow the canopy in the air, you're prolly going to want to eject real soon.

On approach to Miramar ( yeahs lots of unpopulated areas to the south of Miramar)...in a landing configuration..maybe gear down..reduced power..kind of sluggish on control surfaces
Engine fire possibly or flame out.....fighters drop like rocks...no way to turn or evade the area under you, probably less than 2000 feet altitude..you have about 3 seconds or less to think it all through and make a decision..and after a thousand or more hours of training that has taught you to pull the E handle with out a second thought..you pull that handle now...
When is the last time you flew a fighter ? I have not ...but I have a fair understanding of aerodynamics..which you have no grasp on since you quit school in the 5th grade..and never made it to high school physics.
Sad that people died....but there has been more than a couple of military pilots who have gave their lives in service to the country.
Pray tell us about how you avoided a car wreck with your brilliant decision making in less than 1 second.

Landing approach is from ENE, during normal conditions. Miles and miles of empty space in that direction. For some reason, at least when I've been driving by, they come from the opposite direction, to the south of the airfield, and make a huge sweeping 180 before landing. Not sure why they do that but it's all over populated areas. Maybe practicing landings and making big circles or something.
I guess when the wind shifts they would come from the opposite direction.

Re: F-18 San Diego Crash Pilot: Ultimate Coward
I was listening to a discussion on the radio this morning. Apparently the plane was operating from a carrier offshore (USS Lincoln?) and developed engine trouble. The pilot was instructed to land at Miramar instead of returning to the carrier. Second engine went out before he made it to the base. Pilot ejected.

Re: F-18 San Diego Crash Pilot: Ultimate Coward
As stated, the pilot bailed out and let the aircraft go down in a densely populated neighborhood. That he would have been flying over a suburban area at all is obscene. That he would immediately seek to save his own ass is contemptible. Perhaps there's a signing bonus awaiting at Blackwater--they've got some openings coming up.

Re: F-18 San Diego Crash Pilot: Ultimate Coward
There is a reason you see them making the 180 degree turns right before landing. Actually a couple. First is most of their sorties are out over the ocean where whales don't complain about noise. Second, with Montgomery Field, North Island, San Diego, and other private airports airspace is very restricted. Couple that with the F-18's landing speed (3 to 4 times that of a Cessna 172) and the routings get even more restriced.
To me it looks like a loss of flight control as I don't see both engines going out at the same time. Anyone who would blame a fighter jock for riding an uncontrolable F-18 to their own death is sad. Now, not staying with the Cessna is a completely different ball of wax.

Right ..you practice landing patterns with an engine out.....? if he had an engine out, he was straight in or the fastest way to the ground under normal flight configuration and the problem scenario he was in. Engine out means all kind of bad shit, has happened, could happen or is going to happen.titlover wrote:actually the turns are most likely due to he was doing FCLP's adn that is the landing pattern they practice because that is how they land on the boat.Left Seater wrote:There is a reason you see them making the 180 degree turns right before landing. The one thing I do, and all pilots do, is you are constantly looking for a place to land within your glide slope. Always....even with the engine purring along at 6000 feet on a clear day with flat ground under you. I can have my engine go out, dump on full flaps and take my time picking out where I am going to land, make a couple of radio and cell phone calls. Even try and restart the engine a few times.
That changes closer to the ground or in hilly terrain. The FA- 18 has no fucking glide slope other than straight down, real fast.
Left Seaters take on San Diego airspace is spot on..as you would expect a high time commercial pilots to be..pretty fucking congested and you can fly a different approach every time you go in there. I stay the fuck of of TCA areas for exactly that reason, and the fact Maules /Cessnas and 737's, and FA 18 don't go well together.
The chances of getting out of a Cessna are pretty slim as well, since I ..well ...don't wear a parachute. If the shit goes sour, then I get on the ground or I crash. I may walk away or die, but I will take that chance since I can fly thousands of miles and not be exposed to the danger I am just driving to the fucking strip to go flying.
Chances are the Hornet was is a fairly rapid descent from flight altitude with an engine out. There is a very specific flight profile he was probably trying to fly, with those conditions present. Remember, from the time the shit went bad to impact, is about 3/4 of the time it took to read this paragraph.

Bullshit! The idea of F-18s flying around any town is disgusting. Who are we supposed to be attacking with these over-priced pieces of shit anyway? Seriously, who are we supposed to be ready to attack? More Iraqis--perhaps some of the several million who have been displaced? Perhaps we need these super-expensive killing machines to attack Afghani policemen and civilians as they prepare for a wedding? Who else? The Chinese? The Russians?
The entire paradigm of a war-based socio-ecnomic design for America is itself depraved and completely obsolete!
As for the pilot attempting to make it to a private landing strip (with a flight path directly over a densely populated area) this is completely inexcusable.
As for the Korean--recently freed from the harrowing clutches of a nut-cutting mother-in-law--well, he's a fucking Korean and they are simply a hysterical and unbalanced nationality--ask any Japanese--and as much as we admired his brave countrymen defending their corner stores during the Rodney King Looting of L.A. his gesture of forgiveness is hollow.

All right, cut the specious drivel, the Marine commander has confessed that indeed the pilot had plenty of time--after the first engine failed--to attempt several options, but instead was ordered to attempt to fly RIGHT OVER the densely populated suburb. In fact, he could have bailed out over the ocean, losing the F-18, or he could have attempted to land back on the carrier. But no, in the wisdom of the Jarhead universe, the worst option was chosen, with disastrous results. Sort of like Iraq, eh?
As for the Koreans, I stand by my assessment, and hope that this wild Asiatic tribe continues to control itself.

'Scuse me, D-ron, but there were NO F-18s scrambled to protect NYC or Washington DC that fateful day, remember? There was a fucking STAND DOWN which was clumsily masked and excused by the purported "anti-terrorist drill" they were supposedly carrying out. Surely one of the most blatant acts of corruption and espionage ever committed--and you are so densely misled and confused as to believe that this was one of the Air Force's finest moments? Oh, that's right, you're talking about 9/12, after the attacks. Well, guess what? All they had was nineteen guys with box cutters. What are the next day fighter pilots looking for? What a sick joke!
