Bernard L. Madoff is alleged to have pulled off one of the biggest frauds in Wall Street history. But there were multiple red flags along the way, including a series of accusations leveled against Mr. Madoff's operation. Now some are asking why regulators and investors didn't pick up on the alleged scheme long ago.

Sure, he stole $50 BILLION, but hey he's a legend, a real expert--some hagiographer would probably have called him a "genius." But that will have to wait. First there's the trial, then the Goering/Ken Lay style suicide, then we all just try to learn a lesson. Or do we?

A charity in Massachusetts said it had lost essentially its entire endowment and would have to close.

According to an affidavit sworn out by federal agents, Mr. Madoff himself said the fraud had totaled approximately $50 billion, a figure that would dwarf any previous financial fraud.

At first, the figure seemed impossibly large. But as the reports of losses mounted on Friday, the $50 billion figure looked increasingly plausible. One hedge fund advisory firm alone, Fairfield Greenwich Group, said on Friday that its clients had invested $7.5 billion with Mr. Madoff.

Well, good boys like Stephen Weiss of Seeger Weiss and Brad Friedman of Milberg have him "Bernied up" and he'll be spending some dough on them as usual. Does it matter that he and they are all crooks? Think about it.

Mr. Dreier’s lifestyle includes a waterfront home in the Hamptons, a Manhattan triplex and a place on Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Calif. He kept a Mercedes 500 in New York, an Aston Martin in California, and a 121-foot blue and white Heesen motor yacht with a Jacuzzi and a crew of 10 docked in Manhattan or St. Maarten. Associates said the boat, the Seascape, was the site of late-night parties at which Mr. Dreier, who is divorced, was often joined by an attractive young crowd.

So...what is it with these (criminally insane) money experts (aka "Bernies") with whom we entrust basically our entire financial system?

Again, cuda/babs, Bernies come in every political stripe. You can safely bet that there were GOP-supporting Bernies among the Demo Bernies who were gleefully robbed by the Uber Bernie. Try to stick to the point. As someone pointed out, it's an interesting corollary to "black on black" violence, and is not political in nature. :wink:
