Anyone been to Grand Cayman?
I'm planning a trip there. Looking to stay at the Westin. Any suggestion on different hotel?
Also, would you suggest renting a car or just taxis?
[yeah right]Serious replies only, please.[/yeah right]

You going to the north or south rim? Lotta snow on the north side this time of year.

Haven't been there, but, isn't it pretty much just a sand bar? Doubt a rental car would be useful. Just rent a scooter if you want to roam around a bit. Or better yet, a bicycle.

Hmm...may want to rethink this. September is the prime hurricane month in the Carrib...

You definately want to stay at one of the hotels on 7 Mile beach, it's probably where the Westin is as most the large chain places are along the beach. Unless you know how to drive on the opposite side of the road as in "British Style" I wouldn't recommend a rent a car. There's plenty of taxi's at reasonable rates and the island isn't that big. You can go on group shuttles to all the interesting spots from the Rum Factory or to Hell if you desire and it's also reasonable in price. Make sure you go downtown Georgetown and check out some of the banks while the wife does some shopping, you can feel free to buy some Cuban cigars and viagra while shopping yourself... :D ...... Caymans is a nice getaway...Enjoy.

We booked it with hurricane protection at no additional cost. Looking forward to it.

Re: Anyone been to Grand Cayman?
We've been there twice - both times were on company sponsored "president's club" trips - and it was far and away the best of all the islands we went to in the Carribean - but it was also the most expensivve.
White sand pristine beaches - immaculate. I think we stayed at Hyatt once and Marriott the other time. After a while, there's not much that will stand out in the way of hotels - unless they're bad.
The one thing you absolutely want to do is either scuba or snorkle Stingray City. It's a cove area where there's a couple hundred rays and they're really docile with all the tourists. When we went a diver broke out with squid and the rays just swarmed the area. - Just don't step on one and they're fine.

Re: Anyone been to Grand Cayman?
My great uncle was killed by a stingray. The stinger went through his leg and the ray swam down. He drowned. Needless to say, growing up on the Gulf Coast, I've had my share of experiences with rays, sharks and jellyfish. I'm not so fond of swimming in the ocean, but I enjoy the hot sun, beaches and beverages.
