This difference between, say, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon or Neil Young and a fucking Brill Building hack like Springsteen is that I was never convinced anything he said was authentic. That's the only criteria I have for good music. Prepare an honest emotion, whatever it may be, set it to music and convince me of it.

If you want overly sentimental schlock...okay...Springsteen is the man...

So your only exposure to Springsteen is his most commercially successful album, Born in the USA? Noted. That explains a lot of your opinions about Springsteen. Go listen to "Greetings from Asbury Park" or "The Wild, the Innocent, the E Stree Shuffle" and get back to me. If you can listen to "Rosilita", "Lost in the Flood", "Does this Bus Stop at 82nd Street?" and not feel the honest emotion, then you are just blinded by your hatred for Springsteen. Better yet, listen to "Thunder Road" or "The River", especially the latter. There are some real songs on "USA", but he tried to cater to the bubble gum crowd with some as well.

But we both know that after you read this, you will do a frantic search for most of the songs I mentioned because you have never heard of them. You will listen to 30 second clips on iTunes or Amazon.com and then form your opinion.

I can see your type from a mile away. You're the guy that busted out an essay question or term paper based on the movie version of a book you were supposed to read. No one would have known except you focused on Roy Hobbs hitting the final homerun and the sparks falling down on his back and being reunited with his girl and their son.

Then you wonder why you got an F and everyone laughed at you.

Hey, you're not a fan of his music and his sound. I can respect that. What I can't respect is someone trying to wax intellectual about what the meaning of his music is based on the incorrect preception of his most misunderstood song.

I hate the fucker...my older cousins were HUGE fans and made me listen to all that shit when I was younger...couldn't stand it then and can't stand it now...

although I admit I did catch the 80's radio wave and listen to Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days, and Born in the USA as a listener...

but fuck him...I can't stand him...I know Killian will respect that just like I respect that he digs Springsteen as do others...

Actually i am 36 but that's cool...

you took your time ripping the set list for my gig...take it in stride...

then I proclaim I hate Springsteen what is wrong with that...I have posted numerous times that I am a fan of metal, Nu Metal, and Hard Rock type shit...

unless I missed the sarcasm or humor then that is my fault...

not everyone can like MGMT, and indie shit...

I'd cut you some slack if you said Fugazi or Minor Threat. But they aren't really "nu metal" are they?

Not so sure...mostly punk aren't they? At least I think Fugazi is...

look people enjoy the music they enjoy...my point is...it seems on this board if you aren't down with indie or the next version of the White Stripes, Gym Class Hereos, etc or some rare old shit...you get shit hammered...

The Nu Metal I am referring to was credited to Korn...but I believe Anthrax really kicked it off (in my opinion with the rap/funk/fusion/metal hybrid)...but I concentrate on the Korn, Limp Bizkit, Slipknot faction of Nu Metal...as far as Metal Core - Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage, Soilwork, HIMSA, etc...then of course the Hard Hitting Metal from my younger days with Metallica, Pantera, etc...guess I am just a metal head...

no slack needed...we have our opinions...and that is cool...

Tonight, let it be Lohengrin.

I think you might have missed Martyred's point, Springsteen was indirectly promoting the very thing he claimed to be against - that was the real end result of his little 'protest' song.
It's laden with bourgeois nationalist imagery and romanticised the concept, so much so that it wasn't lost on the powers that be.

class treason - self criticism for Bruce.

For myself, this is one of my greatest moments in messageboard history...

When I saw that Phibes was the last post in the Springsteen thread, I pretty much had it pegged at around 99.7% that the word "bourgeois" would appear in his post.

It's pretty fucking rare I LOL at this or any other board, and even more rare that I inspire my own LOL...

But my prognostication did it for me this time... I actually wish the rest of you could have been here to share the moment -- you WOULD have LOLed, too.

BTW-in case you were wondering, before I reopened the thread after calling my shot, I also had it at about 70/30 that he'd misspell "bourgeois."

That's akin to reading a LTS post and knowing you were going to see the words/phrases "nefarious subterfuge" and "unelected cabal". Or something to that effect.

In other words, nothing remarkable.
