Just wondering, when Coach K retires and Duke returns to the middle of the pack...will the hatred still be there? Are they hated because they win or are they hated because they are what they are?

Does anyone really hate the Lakers right now that are a marginal team? Most people probably just don't like Kobe but since they aren't title contenders, they're irrelevant for the most part. Nobody really worries about them anymore.

As a Spurs fan, yep, I still hate them and hope they don't make the playoffs.

The same hatred for Duke has just as much to do with TV hacks' nonstop praise as it does with bad calls by the refs and luck, imo.

I will second Radio Fan, although I am a Celtic fan.

I thought it was funny as fuck when Duke lost every fucking game they played in the ACC about 10 years ago.

[weighing in]

I respect them. But I also laugh, and chorttle when they get beat by the likes of Maryland twice, UNC, Wake, and Ga. Tech. No slouch programs, but, since they never hardly play anybody those first 15 games, (I think Coach K gets it set up that way on purpose, so the TV people are happy that the big ratings games, see tougher games, are on AFTER football is over) it makes you wonder if they'd be a #3 or 4 seed, if they played a tougher NCSOS. They definately front load their skeddy.

I look for a very close finish. Lets hope Davis scores, or gets the call, like we know JJ will, if HE has the ball last. That's ALL MSU fan wants to see. Consistancy and fair on the touch fouls, BOTH ways! That's the biggest fear I have with JJ. You can't breath on the guy, cuzz he makes 95% of his free ones! Which causes defenses to play him scared, thus giving him more room. More open looks. Here's hoping we're in his shorts all night!!!

(Figuratively speaking, of course.)

Its kinda sad. Coach K has over 715 wins and the most wins in NCAA tourney history and yet duke-haters swear that is all b/c they get special treatment. Give the man some credit. He is a legend and has won games b/c he is a great coach, great motivator and prepares his team better than anybody. To constantly say he only wins b/c refs give them calls is bullshit. His players just make more plays than the other team.

Please.

Next you're going to say Christian Laettner's (sp) shot against UK -- you know, the one that everyone has to endure, year after year, week after week, was all about "skill."

Or that their win in '91 was all about "coaching."

Duke is lucky like Notre Dame used to be lucky in football.

Even Coach K will admit that -- you have to be both good and lucky to win an NCAA championship, and Duke has had more than their fair share of luck, along with bandwaggoning TV types who just want viewers based on the pathetic, outdated Jordonesque pro model of marketing dynasties in college basketball.

It isn't going to happen, no matter how much CBS wishes it would, year after year.

And Coach K tried to intimidate the school newspaper at Duke several years ago, when they were about to write something negative about his program, fyi.

Pretty good response, actually. rack

1. Christian Laettner's shot lucky. This is the first time I've ever heard anyone say this. Even Duke haters don't spout this. OK, mabye they were lucky UK didn't put a man on Hill to distract him. But let me remind you.....dude caught a great pass, threw a fake, dribbled, all aware of the clock mind you, and hit nothing but net. You're right...all luck, no skill. Jordan's shot to win in '82 was all skill, no luck...but if he had a Duke uniform on? Reverse that.

2. '91 Title involved no coaching. Yep...no game plan, no guidance, etc. for a team that got run by the same team by 30 the previous year.

3. Duke is lucky. Amazing. ACC titles, regular season crowns, Final Fours, occasional titles. Silly me, it really is all luck. Bravo.

4. Bandwaggoning TV. This is hardly a novel concept. Ever notice how the best NFL team gets the "A" broadcasting crew and is the dominant game on Sunday? Or how the Yankees or Red Sox are on the ESPN games more than anyone? Same with the Red Wings (when there was an NHL..sob..sob...tissue please)? NBA.....really couldn't tell...never watch. And Tiger Woods? Point is, a team that wins a lot.....will get a lot of coverage. This is really a pretty simple concept. That other "lucky" team, Notre Dame football used to win a lot . Naturally, they had/have a lot of fans...as well as legions of anti-fans. This makes for good TV ratings. Same with Duke. Luck or otherwise, they've been better than average for almost 20 years now. The networks are all about $$$....and winning sells.

Bullshit Babs, you don't respect them. And again, out of those first 15 games, is MSU considered one of the teams Duke front loads their "skeddy" with?

When you get 8 to 10 McDonalds All-Americans every year, you should do pretty good.

Hell, I don't think he as good of coach as most because of the talent he brings in and can only muster a final four. He is like Bobby Cox of the Atlanta Braves, he can get there, but can't get the job done, regardless of the talent he brings in.

And there's no doubt that I and all MSU fans respect that program. K has the Iron to warrant respect. Look at how most of his pro's turned out. Not exactly
tearin up the league. That means he does a good job, for the talent level he keeps in a very tough school to attend.

(I just think Izzo is a better coach, s'all. Give Tom 15 more years, he'll push 700 wins, too!)

Nice take all the way up until that last line. Izzo is a great coach but Coach K is the greater coach for his entire body of work. Izzo still has a lot of work to do before he's better than Coach K, Dean Smith, Bob Knight or John Wooden. If Michigan can crawl up off the mat and rebuild their program...we'll see how good MSU is when they won't be the only program in Michigan. Izzo hasn't exactly had a lot of competition in recruiting the Mr. Basketball in state.

Disagree. The only reason UM ever was any good, was because they payed Pros' on the '90's teams.
The '89 team lucked out that Seton f-ing Hall was there.
And that the U. had the sense to hire Bill Frieder!

If UM really wants to compete with State, they'd better start by ridding themselves of Radio Amaker, now.
And then hire a real coach, and not be afraid to pay MONEY for that coach.

But, now as I just read the other day, UM Stadium is up for $200 mil in rennovations. That about blows any chance of UM actually paying a coach to compete with Izzo. It'll never happen.

Sure, you guys might upset us next year, with all the upperclassmen you'll have, but you'll never even sniff the S-16 or the E-8, because you won't pay a Basketball Coach! Face it!

And Cic; I for one do respect Duke and K. It's no mistake they have that much Iron. I still think Izzo is better. Like I said before; give Tom 15 more years at close to 30 wins each. He'll be closing in on 700 also. And prolly a couple more NC's too!

Just mho.

That's my whole point though...it'll take Izzo 15 years to catch Coach K and you're saying he's better now. If we're all still posting on message boards like a bunch of goofs 15 years from now and Izzo has 800 wins or whatever, you can gloat to your hearts content but until then...Izzo is 1-4 against Duke and has only one national title.
