Ok, just opinions who would you say is the biggest giant killer in college football?

My vote has to be Texas tech especially at home where they have beaten Texas last year and Oklahoma the last two times in Lubbock. My second place would go to either ECU or USF. Others I have considered, Stanford, Boise state, Utah, and various teams from the MAC.

If by "giant killer" you mean a team who usually wins a game they really shoudn't (that being against what is supposed to be a superior opponent), I would put A&M in that catagory. They always seem to win a game they shouldn't, but they end up losing a game or three they should win.

I do think Iowa belongs int his catagory too. Like A&M, they aren't an "elite" program, but it seems each year, they have a win they probably shoudn't.

And yeah, tceh has its moments in Lubbock.

Boston College is also a middle of the road team who always seems to come up with big wins.

simply generalizing, msu can be a tough out against a top-flight team. in fact, their only chance to beat one of those schools is to have lost their previous three and be in serious disarray. they've never won a game when the opposition has had to take them seriously.

arkansas seems to be a fucking treat in the sec. okie state comes to mind in the big xii. no one fits that role in the pac 10. i don't even know what teams are in the big east.

the question posed in this thread could be rephrased "which middle-of-the-pack team that has actual talent on their roster occasionally wins a big game?"

in terms of mid-majors, western michigan's won a few games against bcs opponents.

05 OU was pretty average so i don't really a loss in Lubbock against a bowl team (even with the goofy, BS Tech "TD" to close it out) as "giant killing". that OU team lost to TCU and a mediocre UCLA team. 07, Bradford goes out with a concussion in the first quarter. God Bless Joey Halzle, and he played well, but he's not the guy to bring you back 2+ scores down on the road. But, he almost did.

Fresno in the early 00's had some nice wins. i saw them beat CU in person in Boulder in 01. CU won the conference that year...mostly because OU and then UT choked their guts out....but, they did win it. and they DID lose to Fresno State. They won at Wisconsin that year too, maybe.

BC is good choice. they've had some memorable W's.

back in the day in the Big 8, about once a decade Kansas had OU's number.

Man, that is a pretty good question.

My vote would be Florida State. FSU was a women's school until the late '40s.

Once they started playing football they got after it in a huge way. They were way behind the two dominate programs in the state of Florida and still managed to get wins over both. Then they would go on the road and play anyone anywhere anytime. Then when they beat said team they would take some of the grass or turf back home with them and plant it somewhere around the stadium or athletic buildings.

They had a number of huge Fiesta Bowl wins that they had no business winning including a few against Nebraska. Maybe now that they have won two titles the moniker doesn't fit nearly as well, but damn they were one huge giant killer back in the day.

I can see FSU as giant killer if we are talking 70's but 30 years latter the landscape of CFB makes them a giant not a giant killer. I might be wrong but we could probably say the same thing about Penn State before Joe arrived.

I guess I've been operating with a different definition of "giant killer" from most of the rest of this board. I really don't see a problem with labeling ND both a "giant" and a "giant killer."

Because of ND's stature in college football, of course, ND has to be labeled a "giant." But it's also worth pointing out that ND's stature has been built, in no small part, on being at its best against really big teams in really big games. Without looking it up, I'm reasonably certain that ND has more wins against #1-ranked teams than any other school in history, and that that contest isn't particularly close. And not all of those wins came from great ND teams (although, sadly, it's been a little too long at this point since ND pulled off one of those wins). I'd also venture a guess that ND has more upset wins against ranked opponents than any other school in history, although I'm a little less certain on that point.

So I don't see anything wrong with labeling ND both a "giant" and a "giant killer," and making the claim that in the latter category, they're the greatest of all time.

In 1996 Texas was a giant killer when they beat Nebraska, fast forward to 2008 and they were the giant getting killed against Taco Tech. Both would be correct in labeling both Texas a giant and a giant killer.

But in this case for this thread I think we should limit it to those schools that have never been considered Giants or are long past their prime as a Giant. Once upon a time SMU was considered a giant as was Yale, but today neither would come close to that status.

Texas Tech was #6 playing on their home field when they beat Texas. It may have been an "upset" technically speaking, but I don't see how "giant-killing" is accurate.
