Would appear that last year's top pick, Glenn Dorsey, is a misfit tweener in a 3-4.

On the right side of the tracks, Oakland inked the league's best punter, S. Lechler, to a 4 year deal.
Groovy.

They are said to be close to having the league's best (maybe) corner, N. Asomugha, inked long-term.
Groovy.

And they are also said to be on the verge of bringing WR Jerry Pouter back "home" at relatively minimal cost.
Not as groovy.

I always thought Lechler would try to make it back to Texas for Houston or Dallas. Dude was absolutely LOVED as an Aggie. Figured he'd ride that out down there. We basically called him the team MVP. I never really liked that though becasue the dude's job is to give the ball back to the other team. Granted, he did it very far from the line of scrimmage but still, punter as MVP is the suck.

Well he sure as fuck didn't do anything as playing head up on the in a 2 gap DT assignment this season.

How do you figure that? He's about the right weight. If he can make up for his lack of height with his athletic skills he could be a decent DE in a 3-4. Or, he could loose 30 lbs and play middle linebacker. It worked for the Steelers with Levon Kirkland.

6'1" very short for a DE.
297 also not bulky enough, I don't think, to anchor the middle in a 3-4.

But what the hey, he sucked playing in a 4-3, so why not have him suck in a 3-4, just for kicks?

Dave - since you either didn't read or didn't understand what I wrote, I found a couch fan definition for you which I will put in quote box to get you to understand it is important and has direct bearing on my comments:

One-gap responsibility is relatively simple: the defender attacks a hole and must take care of whatever business happens there. He is expected to tackle any running back who goes through that hole, or to force the running back to move laterally into the arms of another tackler. If the offense is passing, the defender's gap is his route to the quarterback.

Two-gap responsibility requires more discipline on the part of the defender. A defensive tackle may be responsible for both the A and B gaps on his side of the field. His job is not so much to crash through a gap as to read the play, anticipate which gap a running back might choose, and clog it. The two-gap defender must quickly diagnose the blocking scheme to determine which of his gaps is more vulnerable. "

To further assist your understanding of this concept I'm putting this picture here:



As you see the DE are charged with primarily protecting the B gap between th OG & OT (a one gap technique) on most plays -

Dorsey sucked in his rook season with KC.
This is the same system Dorsey played at LSU.
If he sucks this year then he is epic fail as a first rounder.
This switch in scheme will determine that.

I understand your point, Scott.
I just look around the league and see that the successful 3-4 anchors are BIG FAT bodies.
You must see that, too.

I don't know how being responsible for just one gap does a NT any good if he's getting pushed off the ball on a consistent basis.
It's like hoping that maybe a 6-9 NBA forward who's struggling will somehow flourish if he's moved to center.

The BIG successful ones in a 3-4 hold their ground and allow for other defenders to clean up.
The main requirement for the position is simply being ... BIG.

A NT of Dorsey's size can do well in a 4-3.
It's mostly a matter of learning the nuances of the position so that he can anticipate well.
Experience.

I dunno, I see him floundering in a 3-4.
Guess we just wait and see how it plays out.

Dorsey would definitely have to start sucking down the HGH errrr "flaxseed oil" to get to the right weight to play NT. He would need to be playing at at least 320 to be an adequate NT in an NFL 3-4. Otherwise he stays at his current weight and is a DE or he leans out and plays inside linebacker. Those are the 3 choices the Chiefs have if they move to a 4-3. His height is only a problem if he can't jump high enough to compensate for it.
