You think a guy from Anchorage is easily impresses by inclement weather?
BTW-mostly sunny and pushing 60 here. Hasn't rained more than a few drops in like a month and a half... since this is the soggysoggy season, we'll freaking take it for February. This area is well known for nearly-constant drizzle in the winter months for good reason, but there hasn't really been any sort of downpour since New Years Day.
Been pretty freaking nice out lately... surely something has to give. Had a dry February last year, and then it was cold and raining all spring, which is also abnormal.

My curiosity was piqued, so I did about 30 seconds' worth of research:
Oregon ranks #46 among states in numer of toradoes, since tornadoes are almost nonexistant. And Oregon gets 40 times as many tornadoes as Alaska (Alabama isn't in the top 5-BTW).

I'm going to go ahead and assume that New York is safely in or near the bottom 5. In the 200+ years since white folks have lived in Rochester, you can count on one hand the number of tornadoes that have touched down in these parts.Dinsdale wrote:My curiosity was piqued, so I did about 30 seconds' worth of research:

Ooops, I guess not. Then again, those rankings don't account for size.

In that time frame of the stats, there were no tornado fatalities in Oregon, but 6 in Washington.
And all six ate it at the same time. I was a little kid at the time, but I remember the Big One of 1972. Probably wouldn't remember, since Iwas just short of 6 years old, but I happened to be downtown with my mother and her friend, in a building with no windows, when the electricity went out.
The tornado crossed the Columbia, hit an elementary school, and killed 6 people. The last big tornado in these parts was about a year ago, which cut a nice swath through Vantucky, WA...
Further prrof that God hates Warshingtonians, and takes particular delight in offing the methheads in that shithole across the river.

We gotta be somewhere atleast in the 40s in the twister power rankings.
The only decent sized one I remember was sometime in the 70s, one touched down in windsor locks, near bradley (ct's only real airport). Took off some roofs and went twisterenthal on some dude. He was in a pickup truck and had the misfortune of getting head butted by a flying telephone pole.
A few years after this happened we moved to another town. Dude was the son of some old lady that lived in the neighborhood. His little sister had nice cans. Glad she wasn't the one to buy it.

Does this mean that Alabama's drought is over?

Rack Nebraskans for having common sense when houses start exploding and F-150's start whipping by. The numbers don't lie:
1,673 twisters (5th)
51 fatalities (23rd)
1,046 injuries (24th)
These weren't pussy tornadoes in remote locations either, judging from the dollar amount of the damage done (11th).

Oh sure, if you introduce facts or something.
Without really kknowing anythiong about it, I just figured from Anchorage's location in an area that throws storms all the way down here, I figured you had about the same west-of-the-Rockies tornado rarity as around here.
But no, we're 40 times more likely to get tornadoes -- and the whole state averages 2 a year or less.
As far as lightning storms -- not too big a deal on this side of the Cascades. They can be frequent, but only during certain brief parts of the seasonal shifts. East of the Cascades -- lightning strikes are a dime-a-dozen through several months of the year.
