basketball is for fags, let the cunts who coach thast soccer for tall inner city kids worry about dead opponents. If my teams are facing off vs a team that just lost one of its own, I'm going after his backup all day long and if my team cant blow out a bunch of snivelers who are upset over the loss of one of their own, suicides for 2 hours.
We have been trying to make up for rain with baseball by having practice wednesday, thursday and tonight and are going to have a 2 a day tomorrow and probably sunday, the first game is in 3 weeks and I have to get my pitching instructor to get more work with the kids and get any quirks worked out of their system. Also have a hitting instructor working with the team tomorrow and sunday afternoons so if any kid on the team is batting under .500 this year, he is getting cut, not happy about having to have 15 on the team, looks like I may have 2 or 3 that are going to be doing a lot of running and pushups til they shape up or ship out.

Schmick,
For as much as you berate basketball as a "pussy sport," I can't for the life of me figure why you like baseball. Matter of fact, given that you've publicly advocated more than once for USC to drop basketball in favor of a varsity hockey program, I'm surprised you haven't also called for USC to drop baseball in favor of lacrosse.
It would be equally idiotic, but at least you'd be consistent in your reasoning.

I think you missed my point.
The point I was making is that Schmick only values sports which provide blood-curdling contact on every play. Hence his disdain for basketball and wish that USC would drop basketball for hockey.
Same thing with baseball and lacrosse in the spring. One would think, anyway.
I''m aware that USC is a traditional baseball power (although I didn't know they had more NCAA titles than anyone else), and I alluded to that, at least somewhat, with . . .

No, Terry, you missed my point, which was of course Schmick makes an allowance for USC playing a "pussy sport" like baseball...because USC is good at baseball! That was the belated realization you were coming to in my post.
If USC were never any good at baseball he'd have no use for USC playing it, same as he has no use for USC playing basketball.
That's just Schmick.
Btw, I'm still waiting for someone to explain the derivation behind his "Schmick" nic...

In the last 30 years $C has 1 national championship. It looks like your baseball program is kind of like ND football. Hasn't done much of anything since Carter was president.
Most of these championships we shouldn't count because (insert your fucked up logic here that you use for football)
Wow, it sure looks like they dominate the baseball landscape. It looks to me like LSU, Miami, among other schools are much better than $C right now.

That was his original nic back when he first surfaced, I think it was at TOT.Van wrote:Btw, I'm still waiting for someone to explain the derivation behind his "Schmick" nic...
Somewhere along the line, the Schmick nic got banned, and not long afterward, he resurfaced as SoCalTrjn.
He never really advertised that it was the same poster, but then again, it didn't exactly take a rocket scientist to make that connection.
In other words, people call him Schmick for much the same reason people call Papa Willie shutyomouth.

Btw, comparing baseball's national championships to football's isn't worth the effort. Baseball from 1958 to the present is pretty much the same game, minus the differences brought to the game by the DH and aluminum bats.
College football in the 19th century and through the turn of the century bears no resemblance whatsoever to modern day college football. USC's national titles in baseball are infinitely more valid and credible than Princeton's and Yale's club league football championships.

Re: this is how you coach kids
You brought this up so I just decided to refute it a bit by mentioning that most of $C's championships were many moons ago when there wasn't much challenge from the several baseball schools that are now present. I do think the game has changed. Back then there weren't as many college choices for top notch baseball so $C got the pick of the litter with talent. Now there are probably 10 schools in the So. Cal area that are better than Sc in the last 10-20 years. The game has changed. With the advancement of different pitches, training techniques, styles of baseball, equipment the game isn't the same as it was when $C was in it's heyday.Oh yeah, I forgot. USC has won more national titles in baseball than anyone else.
Re: this is how you coach kids
No comparison. You didn't refute anything because USC's baseball titles are legit. The majority of their titles occured in the '70s and college baseball during the '70s was clearly very similar to today's game. The leagues were mostly made of the same teams, the tournaments were the same and the game was played the same way. They won their most recent title during the aluminum bats/DH/College World Series era.
Princeton's football titles were mere club league titles duing an era when college football wasn't even known as such.
Besides, why are you jumping on this? I clearly only mentioned USC baseball as a jab at Schmick and his unwillingness to count anything as worthwhile unless USC is good at it.

Re: this is how you coach kids
Dunno about that, you'd have to ask him for certain. Parsing the nic leads to a few possibilities . . .Van wrote:Okay, thanks for the info, Terry.
Now, why was it ever "Schmick" in the first place? What did "Schmick" originally mean? Was it an abbreviation for something?
1. It could be a way of conveying that he's of German/Irish nationality (schmick = sch + mick). But then again, I don't think nationality is the first thing I'd want to convey. Not to say that someone else wouldn't feel differently.
2. Perhaps he was trying to convey that he wasn't that far removed from a schmuck (one space over on the keyboard, in fact).
Also, around that time there was another poster named schmeck. However, schmeck stuck mainly to the main forum and wasn't much of a bomb-thrower. So there wasn't much in terms of similarities between the two besides their names. Getting back to this . . .
I think there's more to it than that. I don't think baseball is, in Schmick's mind, a "pussy sport" that he happens to tolerate only because his school has had some success at it. He seems to really like baseball, enough to coach a Pony league team anyway (although an argument can certainly be made that Schmick should avoid coaching any sport he truly likes, at least at the youth level). He's never posted about coaching youth basketball, and I suspect there's a very simple reason for that: he's never posted about it because he's never done it. Do I know that for sure? No, but I can deduce that from what he's posted (granted, that falls under the Marcus Allen school of deductive reasoning) to the point where I'd be confident enough to bet money on it.Van wrote:No, Terry, you missed my point, which was of course Schmick makes an allowance for USC playing a "pussy sport" like baseball...because USC is good at baseball! In fact, I'll go one farther. I'd be willing to bet money that Schmick's kids have never played youth basketball, and that he'd forbid them from doing it if they wanted to.
There's obviously a difference between the way Schmick treats baseball and the way he treats basketball. On that point we certainly agree. But I think the differences go beyond USC's success, or lack thereof, in each of those sports.

What also has changed since the 70's is scholarship limit in baseball that is absolutely ridiculous, you have a 35 man roster and 11 scholarships. They try to make due by giving players half scholarships but a player with a half scholarship to USC still has to pay 18,000 dollars for the school year, at Cal St Fullerton or Long Beach State, The half scholarship leaves the family with an 800 dollar ballance.
I had never figured out the Schmick thing myself, I did not post under that name, I heard about this place from the College Football forums on AOL
Tonight the Pony leage provided us with 2 umps so we could have a scrimage game vs another team, they used 6 pitchers though the first 5 innings, all of their pitchers were constantly balking, everytime I said something from the dugout the ump said it was a scrimage game and he wasnt going to call balks. finally in the 6th inning the opponent got a base runner when my 2nd pitcher gave up a walk, I called time, told him to "balk like crazy" during wind up and pick the kid off first, he did and the ump gave the kid second base and called a balk. I asked him why they could balk and we couldnt and the other coach screamed "the score is 26-0, give us a break" so I had my pitcher bean their next batter and the umps called the game. Guess we know that team wont be an issue this season, they sucked.

Trying to kill someone else because they are a better youth coach and run a better program is too redneck for Orange County. He should thank me for showing him the glaring weaknesses on his team before the season starts so he still has a chance to work those crappy kids in to shape or motivate them to try something other than baseball since they cant cut it, or maybe try out the local Little League so they can play with their kind.
I did have a mom from my team get upset with me tonight. My son got hit by a pitch and just ran to first before showing any pain, I told the team "see that, shake it off and take your base, crying is for soccer players." I guess that kid plays soccer in the fall instead of football, he's one of the kids I have red flagged anyway and went 0-for in the game today so if they leave, the team will be stronger.

Re: this is how you coach kids
'Spray, there actually is some truth to what SoCalTrjn says about the USC scholarship thing and how the prohibitive cost of going to school there means a lot of people simply don't go there unless they get a full ride scholarship.
That's precisely what happened to me. Coming out of high school (Notre Dame High School, of all places ) I was offered a partial baseball scholarship to USC.
You know how when you're a senior in high school and it's time to begin selecting your college of choice, and you're supposed to come up with your first choice plus a couple of back up choices? Well, USC was my 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 50th school of choice. USC was the only place I ever wanted to go to college. From the time I was eight years old I'd dreamed of going to USC.
Well, unfortunately my family had no money. A mere partial scholarship to USC still meant a huge bill my mom could never afford. I wasn't able to get a full ride scholarship. I had the grades and I was a good enough player but I was just too small physically to be considered a full scholarship center field prospect for a program like USC.
So, that was that. I never did get to play for USC, nor did I get to go to school there.
Point being, I'm sure my scenario is hardly rare. With only 11 scholarships being given out there for baseball I'm sure USC is now losing more than guys like me. I'm sure they're also losing quite a few high level players to more affordable schools, or schools which have available scholarships.

I feel sorry for the kids on idiots team and the teams they play...
While sports are great they provide ways to learn team work, self confidence and a host of other things. this is too Cobra Kai for me...
And save your machismo or whatever i am just as competitive as the next person but I don't compete to win at the expense of someone's or hell my own dignity or class...
I hope you make the trip to Columbus to watch the USC game...I'll be up there and god I hope I run into you...I'll flat knock you on your fucking sissy ass and won't think twice about it...that would make the 7 hour drive worth it in and of itself...

Terra Linda High School.
I was the starting tailback on the 2nd ranked team in the State of California (Cal-Hi Sports) from my soph- senior year.
Senior year we sucked... but, as a soph. we played at the College of the Redwoods in Eureka for the North Coast Sectional Championship ... and we played El Molino in Santa Rosa for the North Coast Sectional Championship in my junior year.
Each of the years we played for the "North Coast" sectional Championship... we were the 2nd ranked team in the state.
As a Junior... we played the top ranked defense in the State of California (El Molino) and I rushed for 99 yards on 21 carries and we won 7-6.
The first play of the game... was a draw play and I was hit the hardest I've ever been hit and lost 4 yards.
I remember telling the linemen in the huddle after that play.... that's not gonna happen again... now is it!!!
The 99 yards was the lowest I was held to that season... but, felt blessed to get that much against that D.

Harm to who? the enemy players? I dont care about kids that dont play for me, my responsibility as a coach is to lead my team to victory, they're not going to be perfect and not going to win every game but if I give them less than 100% or ask less than 100% I would be shirking my responsibility and letting all the kids and the parents on my team down. If other teams dont appreciate getting beat, work harder, its not my responsibility to coddle their self esteem, and if their parents were to say anything Id tell them to find a better coach for their kid or a sport their kid is proficient at, maybe even point them in the direction of the local Little Leagebuckeye_in_sc wrote:I feel sorry for the kids on idiots team and the teams they play...

Dipshit takes this shit way too far...is it great to want to win...heck yeah...but to embarass, ridicule, or just flat out win or lose with no class is horrific...I can guarandamtee you if I were a parent on the opposite sideline I would have already beaten your ass...you do realize you are doing more harm than good here right?
They play 6 inning games and the team lost a game the year before last, since this is a legacy league I remind the team every time they dont want to do wind sprints at the end of practice that they dont want to feel the way they did after that game. My team wont steal a base up 10 runs after the 4th inning, we dont chant in the dug out or celebrate wins infront of the opponents and i dont allow my team to talk smack or to the other team at all, I dont allow them to speak to umps either, they can come to me or one of the other 3 coaches and we will address the ump for them. They treat the other team with dignity but once they enter the dugout its war time and the endgame is the "W"buckeye_in_sc wrote:You are a fucking idiot...and I can only hope that someday you get your ass handed to you on a platter in some game where you lose 25-1 and the other team is stealing bases in the top of the 9th...and your kids are crying foul...karma is a bitch...

Another member of the Class of '82 here.
I could be mistaken, but I think you need a college degree to coach high school football around here . . . although you don't need to be a teacher at the school.Laxplayer wrote:Yes Van...class of 82 and coached football there from 83-90

Terry, no college degree needed to coach high school sports. Also many high schools employ walk on coaches who ar the guys who don't teach at the school and just show up for practice. I refuse to coach anything at our school except golf. Our football team flat out fucking sucks and I'm not putting in countless hours to work with clueless idiots to get ass raped every game for 2,500 bucks. I'd rather go play golf for free 40 times a year and make the same amount of money.
He Mt00l.....nobody asked for your resume. We don't give a shit. never have, never will. Go get your Polk High jersey and run around the house telling your kids how great you were.

Coulda swore m2 was a few years younger than some of the rest of us. 40, 41, something like that.
Anyway, I sorta got you beat, m2. See, my Notre Dame team (the team with Jack McDowell) was ranked #1 in the entire freaking nation...
...the year after I graduated.
Lax, Crespi sucks in football these days? That's surprising. Are you guys and Notre Dame still in the same Del Rey league?
ND wasn't very good in football when I was there. We were good in baseball and basketball, especially when we had future UCLA star Nigel Miguel. Football? Not so much. I wanna say we were no better than Crespi, and maybe a bit worse. Loyola O' The Ghetto used to kill everyone in our league and it wasn't a great league anyway.
Come to think of it, everything about ND changed, immediately after I left!
-ND became a national baseball power, not just a local one.
-The football team even became a local power, to the point that the Justin Fargas (of '02 USC and later Oakland Raiders fame) team was supposed to be genuinely powerful.
-They fucking added girls, the year after I was outta there!! Goddammit! Catholic school girls! The whole place, just thick with Britney Spears wannabe whores, and I missed it by one year!
Lax, was Crespi also an all boys school back then too?

Re: this is how you coach kids
Van when I was at Crespi and coaching there we killed ND every year. There was about a 10 year period when their head coach was a fucking idiot and the program went to shit. They're back now but things are weird. They've allowed some very questionable kids into the school. I'm sure they're not the college prep kids we were going to school with. They've sold themselves to the devil for football success and they've had it recently. They dropped down divisions and won two championships, then recently moved back into what's called the Pac-5 division with the likes of Long Beach Poly, Mater Dei, Servite etc....it's no longer the old league we remember. It's a 4 team league with Crespi, ND, Loyola, and Amat.
Back when we were there your baseball team was fucking great and those basketball games with Niguel Miguel, Bob Mandeville, Steve Lopez were fantastic. Cramming people into that shit hole of a gym you guys had made for some epic battles.
ND added girls when they closed Corvallis High School. Crespi has always been all boys as has Loyola, St. John Bosco, and St. Francis. ND's football team is very good these days and regularly sends about 4 kids to D-1 schools and many to smaller D-2, D-3 schools. Rooney has been there a long time and has done a fabulous job and the crespi nd football rivalry is back among the best in So. Cal.

Re: this is how you coach kids
Lax, correct me if I'm wrong but I wanna say that when I was there we went 1-3 or 2-2 against you guys in football. You guys seemed to be the favorites though any time we played each other.
I don't recall Crespi being much of a basketball school. I think our hoops teams usually won the league titles.
Btw, that's right, it wasn't spelled Nigel Miguel, it was Niguel Miguel. I never knew how to pronounce it during my freshman year there. In my head I always called him "Nih-gul Mih-gul."
Very nice guy, very soft spoken. I think he was the only black guy in our school too. Maybe there were one or two others but that was about it.
Bob Mandeville, man, there's a name from the past. He was a senior and our starting shortstop when I was a sophomore, in left field. Years later he went on to become the head coach, didn't he?
His best friend on our team was our center fielder, another senior named Jimmy something or another. Something Italian. Their family owned a good Italian restaurant on Ventura. Anyway, that guy cost us a chance to play at Anaheim Stadium. During the playoffs we were one out away from advancing to the CIF semis, or finals, I don't recall. I just know it was going to be at Anaheim Stadium, back when they had guys like Rod Carew and Reggie Jackson. I remember being out there in left field, thinking about how I was going to get to bat in the next game, in Reggie Jackson's batting box!
We we up by four, in the last inning. The other team had the bases loaded, with two outs. One of their guys rolls a dribbler up the middle and now we're only up by three. The next guy lines one to shallow center, somewhat in the rightfield gap. I'm thinking, "Fuck, probably two score here. C'mon!!"
Jimmy has other ideas though. He decided to try and end the game by making a diving catch. He missed, the ball shot past him into deep center field and by the time the right fielder recovered it and got it back in the batter had himself an inside the park grand slam and the game was over.
On the bus ride home that Jimmy guy was inconsolable. He was bawling his head off, talking about how worthless he was and how "he cost all of us everything," and Mandeville was the guy sitting with him at the back of the bus trying to calm him down.
Horrible way to end your high school career.
One other guy on that team was named Harper LaBell. He was more of a football player than a baseball player but he did play both sports. He went to Colorado St for football and then he had something like an eleven year career in the NFL, mostly as a long snapper.
Lax, were you there for any of the American Legion games that turned into brawls? Our second baseman, Denny something or another (something Irish) was a real hothead. He used to always get us into summer league fights and I wanna say at least one good one was with a team that was mostly Crespi guys...

Carson? Colton? LB Poly? San Fernando? Mater Dei? Servite? De La Salle? Canyon Country?
I seem to recall these names as being the big time programs back in the late '70s and early '80s. I don't recall any teams playing for the "North Coast" championship being ranked higher than the monster programs from SoCal.
Lax? Does this sound right to you, this Terra Linda school from up north being ranked higher than all but one school in the state?
Never mind the extremely hard to imagine concept of the second ranked school in California having as their three year starting TB a skinny white kid who wasn't offered by any major college programs...

Re: this is how you coach kids
I know when I was a freshman your varsity beat ours 44-6 but my senior year we beat you guys 14-7. Our basketball team was pretty good. We had a couple of 6'7" 6'8" guys who went on to play in college. One at Harvard and had a cup of coffee in the NBA. We would usually make it to the playoffs and lose to Long Beach Poly, St. Bernards or someone else but we'd get two rounds in.
Dude, Miguel was a hell of ball player and I remember him at UCLA. Man being from an all white, pretty racist school we gave him so much crap during games.
I think Mandeville did coach at ND but I can't remember.
I remember Harper Labell.....greatest job in the NFL being a long snapper......
Oh good times.....

Denny Barrett was that dudes name and the game was at Valley College and some shit was said at second base about something that had to do with a jock strap and all hell broke loose. We tried to get on the field....what the hell were we going to do? Who the fuck knows.....but they had the gate to the field blocked off with coaches. Our head coach is now the superintendent of the school district I work for.Lax, were you there for any of the American Legion games that turned into brawls? In fairness, if one were to take m2oodles' word at face value, he was the subject of an intense recruiting war between UCLA and its little brother.Van wrote:Never mind the extremely hard to imagine concept of the second ranked school in California having as their three year starting TB a skinny white kid who wasn't offered by any major college programs...
What's more difficult to comprehend, imho, is how one goes from that to prancing around Ren Faires in chainmail and lipstick.

Now, contrast that to this . . .Laxplayer wrote:Terry, no college degree needed to coach high school sports. Also many high schools employ walk on coaches who ar the guys who don't teach at the school and just show up for practice.
So, either Lax or Schmick is mistaken at best, lying at worst. I don't live in California, so I honestly don't know the laws/rules out there relative to coaching high school sports. But based on their posting history, I'd be more inclined to believe Lax on this point.SoCalTrjn wrote:Pay, a school teacher makes 50 grand a year, they will make an additional 2500 to coach baseball, My family can not survive if I only make 53k a yearMgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:If that's the way you want to coach, why not get into high school athletics? Yeah, like Crespi Carmel Lite was this great melting pot of ethnic diversity!! You guys were "South Of The Boulevard", in, what, Tarzana?? Bwaaahaa!!!
Dude, the only blacks you ever saw there handled the janitorial duties and the nannying of the toddlers while the parents were off wintering in the Seychelles.
Your school logo was a cup of tea held by a dainty hand with the pinky held aloft. Your school mascot was a banker holding a trust fund.
Screaming "Porch monkey! Porch monkey!" at Niguel was also very racially tolerant of you guys.
But yeah, we had quite a bit more jews than we had blacks.
Btw, who was the big doofus white guy on your hoops team that was pretty good? I wanna say he had a Polish name...
