That's all true. What about it? I was talking about why Schmick cares about USC baseball. I wasn't talking about myself.Laxplayer wrote:1948 Southern California 9-2 Yale

Well $C may have more than everyone else but let's use your logic when it comes to football championships shall we van?
In the last 30 years $C has 1 national championship. It looks like your baseball program is kind of like ND football. Hasn't done much of anything since Carter was president.
Most of these championships we shouldn't count because (insert your fucked up logic here that you use for football)
Wow, it sure looks like they dominate the baseball landscape. It looks to me like LSU, Miami, among other schools are much better than $C right now.
You brought this up so I just decided to refute it a bit by mentioning that most of $C's championships were many moons ago when there wasn't much challenge from the several baseball schools that are now present. I do think the game has changed. Back then there weren't as many college choices for top notch baseball so $C got the pick of the litter with talent. Now there are probably 10 schools in the So. Cal area that are better than Sc in the last 10-20 years. The game has changed. With the advancement of different pitches, training techniques, styles of baseball, equipment the game isn't the same as it was when $C was in it's heyday.Oh yeah, I forgot. USC has won more national titles in baseball than anyone else.
I had nothing better to do today. My wife went to work, and all my chores were done so I figured WTF.Besides, why are you jumping on this? I clearly only mentioned USC baseball as a jab at Schmick and his unwillingness to count anything as worthwhile unless USC as good at it.
Dunno about that, you'd have to ask him for certain. Parsing the nic leads to a few possibilities . . .Van wrote:Okay, thanks for the info, Terry.
Now, why was it ever "Schmick" in the first place? What did "Schmick" originally mean? Was it an abbreviation for something?
I think there's more to it than that. I don't think baseball is, in Schmick's mind, a "pussy sport" that he happens to tolerate only because his school has had some success at it. He seems to really like baseball, enough to coach a Pony league team anyway (although an argument can certainly be made that Schmick should avoid coaching any sport he truly likes, at least at the youth level). He's never posted about coaching youth basketball, and I suspect there's a very simple reason for that: he's never posted about it because he's never done it. Do I know that for sure? No, but I can deduce that from what he's posted (granted, that falls under the Marcus Allen school of deductive reasoning) to the point where I'd be confident enough to bet money on it.Van wrote:No, Terry, you missed my point, which was of course Schmick makes an allowance for USC playing a "pussy sport" like baseball...because USC is good at baseball! That was the belated realization you were coming to in my post.
If USC were never any good at baseball he'd have no use for USC playing it, same as he has no use for USC playing basketball.
That's just Schmick.

Pay, a school teacher makes 50 grand a year, they will make an additional 2500 to coach baseball, My family can not survive if I only make 53k a yearMgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:If that's the way you want to coach, why not get into high school athletics? Harm to who? the enemy players? I dont care about kids that dont play for me, my responsibility as a coach is to lead my team to victory, they're not going to be perfect and not going to win every game but if I give them less than 100% or ask less than 100% I would be shirking my responsibility and letting all the kids and the parents on my team down. If other teams dont appreciate getting beat, work harder, its not my responsibility to coddle their self esteem, and if their parents were to say anything Id tell them to find a better coach for their kid or a sport their kid is proficient at, maybe even point them in the direction of the local Little Leagebuckeye_in_sc wrote:I feel sorry for the kids on idiots team and the teams they play...
While sports are great they provide ways to learn team work, self confidence and a host of other things. Dipshit takes this shit way too far...is it great to want to win...heck yeah...but to embarass, ridicule, or just flat out win or lose with no class is horrific...I can guarandamtee you if I were a parent on the opposite sideline I would have already beaten your ass...you do realize you are doing more harm than good here right?
They play 6 inning games and the team lost a game the year before last, since this is a legacy league I remind the team every time they dont want to do wind sprints at the end of practice that they dont want to feel the way they did after that game. My team wont steal a base up 10 runs after the 4th inning, we dont chant in the dug out or celebrate wins infront of the opponents and i dont allow my team to talk smack or to the other team at all, I dont allow them to speak to umps either, they can come to me or one of the other 3 coaches and we will address the ump for them. They treat the other team with dignity but once they enter the dugout its war time and the endgame is the "W"buckeye_in_sc wrote:You are a fucking idiot...and I can only hope that someday you get your ass handed to you on a platter in some game where you lose 25-1 and the other team is stealing bases in the top of the 9th...and your kids are crying foul...karma is a bitch...
this is too Cobra Kai for me...
And save your machismo or whatever i am just as competitive as the next person but I don't compete to win at the expense of someone's or hell my own dignity or class...
I could be mistaken, but I think you need a college degree to coach high school football around here . . . although you don't need to be a teacher at the school.Laxplayer wrote:Yes Van...class of 82 and coached football there from 83-90

Denny Barrett was that dudes name and the game was at Valley College and some shit was said at second base about something that had to do with a jock strap and all hell broke loose. We tried to get on the field....what the hell were we going to do? Who the fuck knows.....but they had the gate to the field blocked off with coaches. Our head coach is now the superintendent of the school district I work for.Lax, were you there for any of the American Legion games that turned into brawls? Our second baseman, Denny something or another (something Irish) was a real hothead. He used to always get us into summer league fights and I wanna say at least one good one was with a team that was mostly Crespi guys...
In fairness, if one were to take m2oodles' word at face value, he was the subject of an intense recruiting war between UCLA and its little brother.Van wrote:Never mind the extremely hard to imagine concept of the second ranked school in California having as their three year starting TB a skinny white kid who wasn't offered by any major college programs...

Now, contrast that to this . . .Laxplayer wrote:Terry, no college degree needed to coach high school sports. Also many high schools employ walk on coaches who ar the guys who don't teach at the school and just show up for practice.
So, either Lax or Schmick is mistaken at best, lying at worst. I don't live in California, so I honestly don't know the laws/rules out there relative to coaching high school sports. But based on their posting history, I'd be more inclined to believe Lax on this point.SoCalTrjn wrote:Pay, a school teacher makes 50 grand a year, they will make an additional 2500 to coach baseball, My family can not survive if I only make 53k a yearMgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:If that's the way you want to coach, why not get into high school athletics?
