Most people are already doing whatever they can to reduce their AGI and hence their taxes. If you're not doing everything legal to reduce your tax burden, you should be.

If the tax increase influences some people to donate more to tax exempt charities, then it's a good thing. The impression I'm getting is that there are a lot of people who are talking about working less and making less, out of spite, to keep their AGI under $250,000. That's just dumb.

Why do you hate America?
Because they don't go after the people who are saving $millions illegally.

You, apparently.

You really do need to get over yourself.
So we all know now that you make lots of money and are very impressed.
Good for you.
You think that because I'm discussing it on a message board means that I give a fuck whether you make $249,999 or $999,999? Like I said, you need to get over yourself.

You may be right about the deductions part, but it looks like even the Dems in Congress are against that part, so don't look for it to go through. And, like I said, the income tax "increase" is really a matter of letting the Bush tax cut expire.

Yeah, I used to be self-employed and that SET tax was was a motherfucker. Especially since I was always too lazy to pay it quarterly and it all hit at once.

Nice link to the wsj. Thing about Social Security though is that, while it was a good concept at one time, it's been so screwed up by now that even I (your lovable liberal) am starting to think that the only way to save it is to scrap it and start over. At this point the notion that it is in any way separate from the rest of the tax (and spend) system is ridiculous. They've been raiding the trust fund to balance the general fund for years. Why should that burden fall disproportionately on lower wage earners?

88 wrote:It was never intended to disproportionately fall on anyone. It was supposed to be a form of supplemental income, which you could draw out based on how much you paid into it. It was originally supposed to work like an annuity, with payouts based on amounts collected and balanced using actuarial tables. Over the years, the payouts and benefits were raised, but the amount going into finance these benefits was not increased. Now, with the Baby Boomers sliding into retirement, things are getting desperate. Everyone knows that Social Security is a giant Ponzi scheme, where new money is used in the near term to pay off current debts. But the day of reckoning is coming.

I think the Social Security program should be scrapped too. But I don't think the people who have paid into it their entire life should get fucked out of their dough. We ought to pay them back their cash, over time, to the extent we can. Congress should close the Social Security program this year for new enrolles. They should freeze benefits and set aside money in our budget to pay for benefits at the current level, frozen for eternity. In 40 years, the current recipients would die off and the program would go out of existence. They would collect their funds paid in, which was the original deal.

If you wanted to start a properly organized, voluntary retirement trust fund for new enrollees at the same time, then so be it. But the cost to participate should reflect the cost of the benefits to be paid out. The government cannot keep lying to people, and saying it can take in only a few dollars from them, but agree to pay them a lifetime of benefits. If they vote to sock it to the rich, you'll see a dramatic reduction in the number of persons who qualify as rich. It is human nature, dog.

I didn't say that they were jobless. I just said they weren't bettering their situation. Anyone who is taking orders for fries and burgers should be no older than 18. People who call others heartless because they demand accountability from everyone are the problem...well, maybe not THE problem but A problem, nonetheless.

Who said I was talking about people who are taking burger orders? The whole point of Social Security was to assist in accomplishing the following...
FDR in a fireside chat wrote:But, in addition to this our immediate task, we must still look to the larger future. I have pointed out to the Congress that we are seeking to find the way once more to well-known, long-established but to some degree forgotten ideals and values. We seek the security of the men, women and children of the Nation.

That security involves added means of providing better homes for the people of the Nation. That is the first principle of our future program.

The second is to plan the use of land and water resources of this country to the end that the means of livelihood of our citizens may be more adequate to meet their daily needs. And, finally, the third principle is to use the agencies of government to assist in the establishment of means to provide sound and adequate protection against the vicissitudes of modern life -- in other words, social insurance.

Later in the year I hope to talk with you more fully about these plans. A few timid people, who fear progress, will try to give you new and strange names for what we are doing. Sometimes they will call it "Fascism", sometimes "Communism", sometimes "Regimentation", sometimes "Socialism". But, in so doing, they are trying to make very complex and theoretical something that is really very simple and very practical.

I do oppose corporations paying taxes. I also oppose anyone avoiding taxes because of ridiculous laws drawn up political hacks who think they know better than we about how we spend our money.

Part of the problem is that the gubmint taxes too much. The other part is the complexity of the system. One should pay taxes as a percentage of income. Period. What kind of car you drive or how much you pay in mortgage interest should have fukk all to do with your tax bill.

Trouble is, if they went to just personal income tax without a complex deduction system, many of the lobbyists would pick up and go home and the whores in DC would hate to see all their johns bag like that.

I do oppose corporations paying taxes.
When will people learn that corporations do not pay taxes--people do. Corporations only become tax collectors for the government. The folks who purchase the corporation's goods and services pay the taxes through increased costs. A flat income tax is the way to go--but we'll never see it.
I'm almost on the verge of giving up hope that we will ever see economic sanity from DC. It really looks like Krushchev was right !

Kinda funny watching the libs unwaveringly support Obama's now explicit plans to soak everyone with more and more and more taxes. I guess they really do believe in a government that confiscates an individual's labor and income. I kinda always thought that while they'd propose this garbage they really never believed in it as they do all they can to reduce their annual AGI via deductions, exemptions, retirement contributions, etc. I naively thought this was just liberal blustering, but these people really do seek to "level the playing" field by using government power to steal our labor and income. Contemporary American liberals really are not different than their Chinese, Soviet, or Cuban commie brothers,

And the arguments in favor of ever-increasing taxes...brilliant. Those opposed to increased taxes should just settle for a smaller hot tub, eh? What about those who forego that hot tub altogether? And the contractors who lose that business? And the manuafacturers that produce the products for a hot tub installation? I guess they, too, should be happy with Obama's tax increases, right?

Fucking morons.
