What up all

Post by Mook »

Howdy everybody. I've been going a bit crazy in "real" life and damn near forgot about this place. Figured I better check in for the tourney though. It's been an interesting year, obviously I am very pleased with how my beloved Jayhawks fared this season. I don't hold out a lot of hope for the NCAA tourney however. This Kansas squad has a nasty little habit of going braindead for about 6-8 minutes EVERY game. Can't really do that in March. I'm hopeful though, they have a helluva point guard and very good big man........that can take a team a long way. Whatever transpires it was a fun year and I will definitely be very interested in the tournament again this year! :D

As for the rest of the Big 12 I think that Oklahoma is clearly the class of the league. Blake Griffin really impresses the shit out of me. The way he handles and passes out of double teams is just magnificent and really what helps make him so exceptional. By contrast Cole Aldrich tends to curl up in a fetal position and suck his thumb when double-teamed!! Griffin's surrounding talent ain't half bad either. Warren is just a phenomenal freshman and Johnson has a good enough shot you have to respect him. Mizzou definitely over-achieved a bit this year. I've always like Anderson and think he is finally showing what he can do with a little bit of talent. Sounds like Bama is offering him more money than Mizzou can afford to pay, I'd be shocked if he's back in Columbia next year. Regardless it was and still is a hell of year for the Tigers. I just think at the end of the day there are too many teams with more talent than them for Mizzou to be a real threat to go to the Final Four or Elite Eight, but who knows, stranger things have happened. The middle of the league is better than most give them credit for but certainly not great. Texas, Ok State, aTm, Kansas State and to a lesser degree Nebraska are all respectable teams. I personally think the Big 12 will get 6 teams in the tourney......right now that doesn't look good for KSU. The bottom of the Big 12 just freaking sucks. Iowa State, Colorado and Texas Tech are awful. Baylor has been dreadful as well the last six weeks.

In the Big 12 tourney I think Kansas will get to the final just on the basis of not having to play OU or MIzzou until then. I think Kansas handles whoever they play in their first round and shouldn't struggle too much with Texas or KSU in the semis. On the other side I think in spite of what happened in Columbia that Griffin will be too much for MIzzou, especially in OKC. Kansas plays OU and who freaking knows.......I personally think OU is the slightly better team but Kansas has seemed to develop a knack for winning this Big 12 tourney lately. Who knows.

My predictions for NCAA tourney for Big 12 teams:
Oklahoma - Final Four
Kansas - Sweet Sixteen
Missouri - Sweet Sixteen
Texas - 1st round loss
Ok State - 2nd round loss
aTm - 1st round loss

Nationally obviously Pitt, UConn and Carolina look pretty good although I think UNC still has the same problem they had last year and that is the fact they play terrible defense. Maybe it won't hurt them but it's hard to imagine them winning it all giving up points the way they do. And they do a lot of stupid things down the stretch.......like fouling with a big lead. Interesting team with a lot of talent but they definitely aren't unbeatable. And this is just me but I think Ty Lawson is the most over-rated player in college hoops today.

As of today my Sweet Sixteen would look like this (obviously there aren't any brackets, but just pretend) and these aren't rankings, just my pick of sixteen.
1) Pittsburgh
2) UConn
3) North Carolina
4) Oklahoma
5) Kansas
6) MIssouri
7) Purdue
8 ) Louisville
9) Michigan St
10) UCLA
11) Washington
12) Florida State
13) Clemson
14) Gonzaga
15) Duke
16) Memphis

Some possible sleepers for the Sweet Sixteen would includes St. Mary's, they learned to play without Mills and now he's back, this is a very good team. Arizona State, Harden and Pendergraph are nice players. ASU has been very inconsistent but they could get hot or get a good draw. BYU, Utah, New Mexico, UNLV, SDSU.......depending on who or how many get out of the MWC these are all very similar squads and could all do a little damage given the right situation.Ok State has been playing better and could possibly get there. Anyway those are a couple of semi-darkhorse picks. Nothing crazy.

That kinda sorta catches me up on the hoops season. I've been watching (and gambling  ) all season just haven't been around these parts. I look forward to the tourney and will definitely be around here for the next few weeks.

Rack any and all Mook appearances and the solid takes. Lots to comment on there but I'll confine it to this.

Mizzou will likely get ATM in the Big XII tourney whom they've lost to 5 straight times. I'm not even counting on a rematch against OU in the semi's, but if it happens, being in OKC, it could get ugly. Might as well be a home game for the Sooners, and the pokes, for that matter.

Don't sell KU short. That's an athletic bunch who could easily make the Final Four.

I'll be ecstatic if Mizzou makes it to the Sweet 16. They're just too raw and inconsistant away from Columbia.

after decades of KU, KSU, and MU "home games" in Kemper....you can't possibly complain about the conference tournament and a "hostile" court.

Be that as it may, Kansas is the league champion and proved it on the court, Blake or no Blake. Heck of a coaching job by Self.
I agree completely and I agree Kansas very much deserves their league title. The team that wins the regular season title always does. However that doesn't change my opinion that right now OU is slightly better positioned to make a deep run in the tourney. Doesn't necessarily mean it will happen but it's my assessment of the situation based on what I've seen with my two eyes.

I'd like to see KU/OU match-up in the finals, it would definitely be interesting.

No complaints. The tourney should move around from year to year. In fact, win or lose, playing on a hostile court in the conference tourney is better preparation for the one that really matters.

That said, I did rather enjoy having it in KC all those years.

i agree with this. in my eyes, the regular season champ=champ. the tournament champ=the tournament champ. i'd rather win the regular season than the tournament. it's somewhat wearying on the homer sites to see the logic of "who's the real champ?", reg season or tourney, argued from both perspectives, depending on which favors "your team" that particular year.

having said that, i have no idea what to think about the Big XII tournament. (this will blow minds): i think the winner will probably be OU, KU, or MU. I don't see anyone else being able to win two consecutive games against either of those teams. ATM has something to prove but I don't think they beat MU twice in a row....and UT can play with just about anybody but not for 40 minutes, not in Austin. Unless Abrams goes for 50, i don't think James and Pittman can really beat the better teams in the post scoring the ball. I don't think KSU has much of a chance play their way onto the bubble with an rpi in the 70's.

there's a lot of interesting drama with the top teams.....OU-KU, minus Griffin...Capel talking a little in papers. MU-KU, is always MU-KU, OU looking for some revenge after (basically) a double digit loss in Columbia. right now, OU is a mystery team. they aren't the same team they were 5 weeks ago. they don't attack the rim on the break, push the ball with numbers, and D has been pretty sloppy. They get a lot of "stand around and watch Blake" on O. Patillo has crash landed back on Earth.

I saw Pat Forde picked OSU to win it all....based on their ability to get hot and the "home" site in OKC.

I don't know who Pat Forde is, but so did I in the conference tourney pick 'em contest. Couldn't resist the massive :bode should a number 7 seed pull it off. Tough to win four games in 4 days, though.

1) What's going on in here?
2) I hope Travis Ford gets all excited over some bullshit call tonight and decides to transfer to Kentucky.
3) fuck yo couch, Oklahoma City. With 6 minutes o go ana 24 point lead, the rarely used guard Quantrill will come of the bench and set the court on fire.

Baylor beats UT for the first time since the 20th century.

Z-O-U.

I'm hoping they don't sleepwalk thru the 1st half tonight like they often do. This may sound like a cop-out, but this game means more to OSU than it does the Tigers. At least it should. They're still a bubble team and if they can't get up for this one, they have no bidness in the dance.

'sup, bace? Long time no post. adel's been AWOL as well.

you called that.

if there are worse announcers than Doug Bell, Dave Armstrong and Reid Gettys.....who?

i forgot that Ford played at Mizzou before t-ferring to Kentucky. Did he play for Eddie Sutton at UK? or Joe B. Hall.

I think former Royals pitcher Paul Splitorff does some Big 12 games. All the color analysis from a baseball player. He's worse.

Typical 1st half for Mizzou, can't make their shots. They're lucky to only be down by 2 instead of 20. I look for them to turn it around in the 2nd and wear OSU the fuck out, especially if Eaton's out for the remainder.

And yes, Armstrong definitely sucks. He needs to be selling insurance or something.

At least Splitt gets his facts straight.
