NEWPORT BEACH -- A man killed in the high-speed crash of a $300,000 Ferrari has been identified as the mixed martial arts industry figure who went by the name "Mask."
Charles "Mask" Lewis, the co-founder of apparel company 'TapouT,' died early Wednesday morning when his rare Ferrari crashed into a light pole at the end of what police say may have been a street race.
TapouT released this statement:
"It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we must regretfully confirm the passing of our beloved friend, brother and co-founder Charles "Mask" Lewis following a car accident that occurred last night.
We are currently in the process of setting up a memorial service in his honor and will release more details as they become available.
Many thanks to all for the outpouring of blessings and well-wishes during this incredibly difficult time."
An officer in a patrol car was going north on Jamboree when he noticed two vehicles, a 2004 Ferrari Modena and a 1977 white Porsche coupe, swerving out of control, Newport Beach Lt. Craig Fox said.
The Ferrari lost control, hit a curb and crashed into a light pole, which toppled onto the car, crushing the front portion, said Newport Beach Police Lt. Steven Shulman.
The impact of the crash split the vehicle in two and sent debris flying onto the roadside.
The Porsche stopped momentarily but then sped away, Fox said.
The driver of the Porsche, Jeffrey Kirby, 51, was taken into custody after officers spotted the vehicle moments later.
He and a female passenger were reportedly walking away from the car at the time.
Kirby was being held on $1 million bail while facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. A possible court appearance was scheduled for Thursday.
Newport Beach resident Lynn Marie Nabozny, 32, was arrested for public intoxication, Fox said. She was released and will not be formally charged, he added.
A woman thrown from the Ferrari was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana suffering from broken bones, including a broken arm, Fox said. She was listed in stable condition.
Hours after the crash, the front portion of the luxury Italian sports car could be seen resting against a hillside several feet away with its lights still functioning.
The Ferrari Modena has a top speed of about 186 mph.

Not sure, but they had to dig him out from under the car. Or from half the car, anyway. I notice the Farrari symbols all look intact. Thank god for that........any publicity is good publicity....yes?
Newport Beach firefighters stabilize the front end of a demolished Ferrari in order to extricate the body of a man pinned underneath.
I think the police and fire dept should get to keep the cash, since he caused them to work that hard a rare, relatively slow night up there
While I can appreciate what the Tapout guys have done to advance MMA into the mainstream, I hate their costumed schtick. I also hate seeing all the Tapout t-shirt wearing douchebags thinking they're tough guys for wearing a fucking shirt. That Mask guy was one of the most annoying people on the planet. Sucks what happened to him but it appears that he did it to himself.

You've got to Rack the light pole though for making him tapout.
No shit. But I bet Royce Gracie wouldn't have submitted. I bet he would have simply
laughed and used his tongue to maneuver his decapited head back to the body.
