Not expressing much confidence in a quick turnaround under the new leadership.

Well, '09 is going to be a building year, no question, and there is no certainty that things will get realistically competetive again for the Chefs even beyond that, so TG is hoping to get to greener grass.

I thought the J. Allen trade was verrah dumb on KC's part, due to his youth and excellence.
But in this case, I could see moving a great player to be a sensible thing, if you get good value.

You're not winning anything with him, so you may and not win anything without him, and collect a pick(s) or player(s) in the process.

In other Chiefs related news, radio hacks here are reporting that the local carpenter and iron worker unions are set to walk out on strike next week, effectively stopping the massive renovations on The K and Arrowhead. This shouldn't effect the Royals home opener in 16 days as most of the re-construction is already complete.

However, if the threatened strike lasts more than a month, it could cause the Chiefs to have to play all their home games on the road. The Arrowhead work just began after last season ended.

I don't believe it will come to that, but it would sure suck if it did.

You wouldn't have to subject yourself to watching such an inferior product and you'd have that money that you would have wasted on Chefs/Royals to spend on products that may actually offer a ROI.

He obviously wants both. He probably knows he's pretty much a sure thing for the HOF. He knows the Chiefs aren't going to compete for a Superbowl before he decides to hang up his cleats. I can't really blame him. I'd like to say if he plays for 2 or 3 more years in KC he might have a chance at the Superbowl but I'm not comfortable saying that. Too many unknowns and unproven coaches/players. I'm sure he doesn't want to go to the Chargers as they are really lacking in both Superbowls and HOF'ers.

It's perhaps not the worst thing in the world, but the modern day "I just want to get my ring" sense of "entitlement" that fans have come to expect really outstanding players to have is sort of ... gay.

From THIS fan's perspective, I would admire a guy like Tony G. a LOT more if he openly pushes aside trade talk possibilities and instead said something like, "Hey, Kansas City has been great to me over the years. I've played hard and they've done right by me. I love the fans. I want to do my best to finish up here and hopefully get the Kansas City Chiefs back to winning ways."

But instead, Mr Fan nods his head and dreams of fluffing a guy like Tony when he makes noises about jumping off the sinking ship and going elsewhere to ... "Get MY ring."

A bittersweet move by KC.

The Chefs are not winning anything in '09, so dealing Gonzo away for a 2nd next year is prolly a savvy move.

Of course a draft pick is a crap shoot, so who knows what you actually get for him, but when you consider he'll likely be OUT in a couple years anyway, and you won't be getting ANYTHING for him, the move makes sense.

Tony wanted out, for good reason. KC released him, for good reason, and granted his wish.

But don't think for a second that TG got over on the franchise that was his meal ticket for the past 12 years. If they had wanted to keep him, they would have. And Gonzo being Gonzo, he would have gone out there and performed like he always has, even if he was unhappy, just like he did last year when he wanted to be traded.

So now he's with a "contender", the heretofore "pathetic" Falcons, and I hope he's happy. He'll never get the amount of fan support and adulation he got at Arrowhead.

But what if they don't make the playoffs this year and the Chiefs do? Stranger things have happened. Will he be happy then, or regretting getting what he asked for?

I never said Gonzalez 'got over.' I just don't have a problem with NFL players forcing their way out of town. It's the only sport where the owners have leverage when it comes to contracts. Any of the 4 major sports, you're pretty much saddled with the shit that you sign for the length of the deal. Tony wants out? He thinks the grass in greener on the other side? So be it... don't let the door hit him on the ass on the way out.
