Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
Tony Gonzalez asks nicely to be let the fuck OUT of KC
Not expressing much confidence in a quick turnaround under the new leadership.
Well, '09 is going to be a building year, no question, and there is no certainty that things will get realistically competetive again for the Chefs even beyond that, so TG is hoping to get to greener grass.
I thought the J. Allen trade was verrah dumb on KC's part, due to his youth and excellence.
But in this case, I could see moving a great player to be a sensible thing, if you get good value.
You're not winning anything with him, so you may and not win anything without him, and collect a pick(s) or player(s) in the process.

Re: Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
In other Chiefs related news, radio hacks here are reporting that the local carpenter and iron worker unions are set to walk out on strike next week, effectively stopping the massive renovations on The K and Arrowhead. This shouldn't effect the Royals home opener in 16 days as most of the re-construction is already complete.
However, if the threatened strike lasts more than a month, it could cause the Chiefs to have to play all their home games on the road. The Arrowhead work just began after last season ended.
I don't believe it will come to that, but it would sure suck if it did.

Wags... it's a win/win for KC fan.
You wouldn't have to subject yourself to watching such an inferior product and you'd have that money that you would have wasted on Chefs/Royals to spend on products that may actually offer a ROI.
I don't see the problem here.

Now that you mention it ucant, it would sure end any threat of a local blackout of the games. I'm still surprised that not one was blacked out last year, even when Arrowhead was at best only 3/4 full.
As for Gonzo, he'll retire and go into the HoF on the first ballot as a Chief.

Would he rather have a Superbowl ring or be a H.O.F.er?Nixhex wrote:One more Chief in the HOF. Speaking of poor bastards. How about those Charger players? :Dmvscal wrote:The poor bastard...War Wagon wrote:As for Gonzo, he'll retire and go into the HoF on the first ballot as a Chief.
Re: Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
He obviously wants both. He probably knows he's pretty much a sure thing for the HOF. He knows the Chiefs aren't going to compete for a Superbowl before he decides to hang up his cleats. I can't really blame him. I'd like to say if he plays for 2 or 3 more years in KC he might have a chance at the Superbowl but I'm not comfortable saying that. Too many unknowns and unproven coaches/players. I'm sure he doesn't want to go to the Chargers as they are really lacking in both Superbowls and HOF'ers.
Re: Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
It's perhaps not the worst thing in the world, but the modern day "I just want to get my ring" sense of "entitlement" that fans have come to expect really outstanding players to have is sort of ... gay.
From THIS fan's perspective, I would admire a guy like Tony G. a LOT more if he openly pushes aside trade talk possibilities and instead said something like, "Hey, Kansas City has been great to me over the years. I've played hard and they've done right by me. I love the fans. I want to do my best to finish up here and hopefully get the Kansas City Chiefs back to winning ways."
But instead, Mr Fan nods his head and dreams of fluffing a guy like Tony when he makes noises about jumping off the sinking ship and going elsewhere to ... "Get MY ring."
Oh well, whatever.

Through his actions on the field, that's exactly what he's done. I could care less about the words he mouths. Last year this trade talk came up. He was unhappy, wanted to go to a "contender". KC told him to stfu and go earn your ginormous paycheck, and he goes out and has a career year. I've no doubt he will do the same again this year, and maybe next, until he decides to hang up his shoulder pads for good.

In a sense this is true.Through his actions on the field, that's exactly what he's done. I could care less about the words he mouths.
However, I think it would go a long way as far as leadership ... in the room ... if younger guys heard Gonzo vocalize that he WANTS to be in KC, that he WANTS to bust ass to turn things around again, and that he BELIEVES that TOGETHER, they can all do it in KC.
I dunno, I'm prolly too old school for my own good.

TG wanted to be traded to Green Bay last year, but the Quiefs were asking to much. I would have loved to have him there!

It's just a job to these guys, 'tart. Cash that paycheck, look out for #1. Loyalty went out the window long ago. In fact, I'm not sure it was ever part of the equation.

We spent at 1st round on Tony. Got about 85-90% of a HOF career out of him. We trade him for a 2nd round pick. Solid.mvscal wrote:A 2nd round pick for a 13 year vet with maybe one season left? Oooookay.
Looks like Belichick's crew continue to suck each other off with sweetheart deals.
I bet Tony has another solid 2 years at least left in him. I still think it's a good trade. I kinda wish is was this year's 2nd round pick. However, I wouldn't put it past Pioli to use it to move up somehow in this year's draft.

See ya' Tony, and thanks.
Great career, but I hope it ends in a season ending knee injury in the first game.
You don't exist to me anymore....
unless, of course, I decide to draft you again in JFFL... then you may marginally exist.
Re: Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
A bittersweet move by KC.
The Chefs are not winning anything in '09, so dealing Gonzo away for a 2nd next year is prolly a savvy move.
Of course a draft pick is a crap shoot, so who knows what you actually get for him, but when you consider he'll likely be OUT in a couple years anyway, and you won't be getting ANYTHING for him, the move makes sense.
Pisser that a guy as great as him WANTS out, when he could have been a career Chef.
That's modern pro sports, though.

Why the fuck would a sure fire HOF want to waste his last couple of years on a shit team? Why is that... a pisser? I am surprised he stayed that long with such a pathetic franchise. Any team can cut any fucking player at any fucking time... contract or no. Why do you lament the lack of player loyalty when it's non-existent on "the other side"?
Perhaps you shouldn't leave the house without a real helmet, instead of the leather one that affords your noggin' no fucking protection.

Poptart's just lamenting the good old days when guys like John Elway NEVER forced their teams to trade them.

Look at Patsiefan namecalling. It wasn't that ago NE was a "pathetic" franchise, when KC was anything but.ucantdoitdoggieSTyle2 wrote:I am surprised he stayed that long with such a pathetic franchise.
True, but there may be some amount of guaranteed money involved with that contract, which the team forfeits if they just dump said player.Any team can cut any fucking player at any fucking time... contract or no.
Bullshit. It's not "non-existant".Why do you lament the lack of player loyalty when it's non-existent on "the other side"?
King Carl was loyal to certain players to a fault, see LJ's contract, and Tony certainly never went begging.

Wags -- "I know I am but what were you?" Should I have expected anything less? Awful. Just plain awful.
I am not talking about King Carl... I am talking about the previous block you quoted. "Any team can cut any player at any time." There's no such thing as loyalty from any owner. Unhappy with the millions you gave that 'underperforming' player? It doesn't matter that he gave you 'his all' the previous 5-10 years. Fuck him, he's gone. Any player wants to 'go get his' elsewhere... so what? I can leave my job for a better "team" anytime I choose as well. And I could give two shits about whom I leave behind to boot. I gots moufs to feed....

Re: Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
What?
Tony wanted out, for good reason. KC released him, for good reason, and granted his wish.
But don't think for a second that TG got over on the franchise that was his meal ticket for the past 12 years. If they had wanted to keep him, they would have. And Gonzo being Gonzo, he would have gone out there and performed like he always has, even if he was unhappy, just like he did last year when he wanted to be traded.
So now he's with a "contender", the heretofore "pathetic" Falcons, and I hope he's happy. He'll never get the amount of fan support and adulation he got at Arrowhead.
But what if they don't make the playoffs this year and the Chiefs do? Stranger things have happened. Will he be happy then, or regretting getting what he asked for?

Re: Pretty please, get me OUT of this shithole
I never said Gonzalez 'got over.' I just don't have a problem with NFL players forcing their way out of town. It's the only sport where the owners have leverage when it comes to contracts. Any of the 4 major sports, you're pretty much saddled with the shit that you sign for the length of the deal. Tony wants out? He thinks the grass in greener on the other side? So be it... don't let the door hit him on the ass on the way out.
Move on, nothing to see here. It's just business.
I expect a tearful post from 'tart lamenting how cool things used to before free agency (and Riddell helmets)... like back in the Sammy Baugh era when he was a lad.
