That is not the same as "I have not been convicted", however.
“The case is still pending on the basis of motions which we filed for a new trial or for a dismissal of the case for prosecutorial misconduct,” he said. “I have not been convicted of anything.”
Shut up and get your ass in prison already, douchebag.

I am sure there are or soon will be post-verdict motions that the Court will have to resolve, which seek a new trial or dismissal of the case on technical grounds. Stevens isn't scheduled to be sentenced until February 25, 2009, so his criminal case is not final and there is no judgment from which he can appeal. In the meantime, Stevens could croak, while maintaining his innocence, which would extinguish the criminal case and leave it as if nothing ever happened. See, e.g., Ken Lay: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article ... 72,00.html
Most people interpret the word "convicted" as being "found guilty" in a verdict returned by a jury. In that sense, Stevens has definitely been convicted.
^^^ Pretty much nailed it from a legal standpoint.
From a political standpoint, however, Stevens' career is over, as well it should be. No way he can, or at least should, win an election following a guilty verdict.

I disagree. In legal parlance, if he wins his appeal, won't his conviction be overturned? For that to happen, there has to be a conviction to start with.

I now understand at least a little bit how Palin could say she is a reformer with a straight face. Alaska has just elected not one, but two felons to Federal office.
Congratulations Alaska.

Between a felon (who will be expelled from the Senate once his conviction is official-and replaced with a Republican) or another idiot Democrat, they made the right choice.
Good call, Alaska.

He's still around, ain't he?
I'm not aware of a time where I ever praised the intelligence of the average Louisiana voter. Congratulations Alaska, you're now as fucked up as Louisiana.
