Vijay Singh is a freaking witch.

That's right, he freaking skips the ball across the water for an ace. That's just stupid good.

Did he purposely skip it?

I can't imagine that he would. I see no possible reason to do it on purpose.

If it was accidental, then bri wins dumb post of the day, maybe week.

It would help if you knew something, ANYTHING about the tradition at the Masters of players skipping shots across the pond at the 16th hole during practice rounds. Of course he did it on purpose. ALL the players do it on purpose at the 16th, right after they play their normal, in the air, approach shot.

While Vijay is not negroid, he does come from the gene pool of darker races in the middle americas. But after the african slaves hit the new world, all bets are off.

Anyway Vijay's has the athletic gene of blackness, but lacks the focus gene of the oriental, like tiger. therefore and fukkin ergo lefty stays #2. a mix of indian and spanish blood might make up his other half but it is still to animalistic compared to the eastern genes to help him.

thank you very much mr masters trivia rainman.

As for it being a skill shot, well, let's just go with "you're a fukkin' idjit". That was a case of freakish luck. Just as is any hole in one. Anything put within, say 10 feet or so with a normal golf shot on a par three is basically considered a perfect shot. If it goes in, it's just stupid luck.

SKipping it across the pond is like saying bouncing it off an azalea tree for an ace is a great shot. No, it's not. It's a fukking lucky shot.

For starters, Azaleas are shrubs, not trees. So, besides you demonstrating a complete lack of understanding of golf, you also don't know shit about the flora of Augusta national.

Anyway, if the golfer in question MEANT to hit the shrub as a means of directing the ball towards the green as Vijay did with his skip shot, then yes, that would also be a shot of extreme skill.

Tree, shrub, whatever. Hitting a particular piece of flora could rightfully be considered a feat of skill. Having it ricochet into the hole is pure fukking luck.

Do you suppose vijay is gonna display this skill on sunday afternoon?

Me neither, because it ain't skill. It's luck.

It would be pretty interisting, IMO, to station RtS next to the green and let the entire field try to bounce shots off him into the hole.

Vijay's one of the few 46 year old guys I would give a chance to win the Masters.

Funny how those with superior skills often have better luck. Doncha think?

Link me to where I said VJ was not one of the best golfers in the world.

VJ is a damn good golfer because he has won his share of tournaments, including a green jacket, by hitting real golf shots. I don't ever recall hearing mr golf announcer dude say...

verne lundquist: so, what do you suppose VJ is gonna do here, arnie?

arnold palmer: well, with today's pin placement, I think VJ's best bet is to try and play it off that funny looking tree off to the left, verne.

VL: What kinda tree is that arnie?

AP: beats the shit outta me, verne. Why don't you call bsmack and ask him. And while you have him on the phone, ask him when he's gonna pay up on that skins match from 3 years ago.

Do you know why professional golfers are able to skip shots across the water on command?

Think long and hard on that one.

I guarantee you I can skip a ball across water as well. Trust me, I've done it. I will give you that a pro golfer will be better at it than I as he will be better at doing pretty much anything involving hitting a golf shot. This does not change the fact that doing so and having it result in an ace is dumb fukking luck.

How's this. You line up 10 randomly selected pro golfers on that hole along with VJ and tiger. Have them skip shots across the pond all day long. I would guess that the group as a hole will have similar success in aceing any of them. The results would likely be completely random since you are introducing a variable into the equation (skipping the ball) that is pretty fukking difficult to control, unlike hitting it through the air which is quite controllable.

OK, I've thought long and hard. Well, not really. They can do it because they are practicing and don't much give a fukk about results that day and as you have said, there's some sort of tradition here and it's a fun show for the crowd.

Next time I am at a range where you hit floaters into a pond, I will work on this skill. Other than that, I actually have to buy my own fukking golf balls unlike the pros and therefore am a little less likely to do it.

Since this is a long established tradition, I would guess there are some stats available on how often somebody has skipped one into the cup there. I'll go ask mr goggle and get back to you.

The correct answer is that they practice those shots. They also practice opposite hand shots, shots from behind trees and all sorts of other shots that you and I wouldn't even think to try.

You know why?

BECAUSE IT'S THEIR FUCKING JOB.
This does not change the fact that doing so and having it result in an ace is dumb fukking luck.
Which obviously explains why guys like Vigay and Tiger have recorded multiple aces and guys like you and I have recorded none. Yea, no skill involved there.

Wow. Just wow. I can't believe you just typed that. A better measurement would be to line up 10 scratch golfers against 10 PGA players and give them the whole day. I'll guarantee you the PGA guys would kick the crap out of the scratch golfers.

Speak for yourself, you fukking hack.

7th hole, millington naval training center course, summer of '85. 160 yds slightly up hill, 6 iron. Seeing as it was uphill, I had no idea it went in. Just remember striking the ball and thinking, damn, that was shweet, it ought to be close. Walked up to the green, looked around and thought, fukk, I musta hit it a little too good and it went long. My playing partner walked up to the cup, looked down and asked me what I was playing. I just hope to hell that if I am ever lucky enough to do it again, I can atleast watch it go in.

While I agree the fact the ball went in the cup, there was some amount of luck involved, skipping it across the pond is indeed a skill. In high school, our coach made us practice skipping the ball over water. Basically, when your ball is on a downhill lie at water's edge, with a decent lie, you can hit a really nice skipper. That was the shot he had us practice a few times. Just hit a knock-down punch with an outside in swing to put some slice spin on it and you hacve a good chance of skipping it.

I played golf in high school as well. We had similar drills. Our coach called it "don't hit it in the water, dumbass".

I can see where such a lie would greatly increase the chance that you might hit one in the drink and I understand the concept of getting some backspin on it in hopes that it will skip rather than go down like fubu clown at the million man march, but, I would guess that the intention would still be to keep the fukking ball dry if possible.

Does anyone actually know of instances where pros have skipped it in real play for reasons other than tradition or fan entertainment?

Not all that unheard of, but it is a last resort shot. And notice the technique in this is close to what I said we practiced in HS.

the reply about doing it in match play seems to make the most sense to me. In such a situation it doesn't matter whether you make a bogey or a triple bogey. Might as well go for it. In PGA stroke play, you'd really have to be fuct to consider such a shot. Maybe a case where there's real nasty trouble if you go long it would make sense.

Go back and read the rest of the thread, dumbass.

He later says that they are good at it because they practice it just like they do other weird shots in the off chance that they might have to use it. Indy backs this up saying he's practiced it in high school. He then posts a link to a sight which actually talks about using this technique. One of the posts at that link commented that they thought such a risky shot would only make sense in a match play situation. I agree with that particular comment.
