DickRod is a lot of things, but he doesn't seem like the type to pull publicity stunts. So what's the deal? Paulus hasn't played a down in years, can he really compete with Tater Tot Forcier? I thought that guy was supposed to be the savior?

Even if this doesn't pan out (which I can't imagine it will), the whole thing is still pretty bizarre and hilarious all wrapped into one.

Maybe Paulus just wants to go sissyroo and rep both Duke and Michigan.

His high school coach is telling him wouldn't work in a run-first spread offense since he was more of a passer. It would be one thing if he had more than one year of eligibility left also. i think duke has a three-year starter returning this year, which probably has more to do with paulus being told forget qb there.

i'm not so high on that joke show coming to michigan, but selah. forcier looks like the real deal, but he has 12" biceps and lives in a dorm. our current backup is nick sheridan's broken foot. until denard robinson shows up on campus and looks like a serviceable qb three years from now as a junior, i'll just go ahead and say this paulus thing isn't such a bad idea. he actually hasn't been offered a scholarship yet, and even if he eventually is it's not like we don't have three available at the moment. qb is a bit shallow for us right now, so taking a chance on a former big-time prospect and hoping he wins the backup job isn't that silly.

That way, he could practice with the team for a year, and still be able to compete for the starting QB position in his final year of eligibility in 2010. If he's seriously considering transfering to be a starting QB, then Syracuse, his hometown school, probably should enter into the discussion, especially with a new coach. He probably should also consider a non-BCS level school.

If his long-term goal is to reach the NFL as a QB, and I were advising him, I might advise him to go either the Arena league or CFL route at this point, however.

I thought the rule stated that someone who graduates can have a 5th year at a different school without penalty of sitting out a year.

the reason he has just a year of eligibility left is because you have five years from when you first enroll. if he has to sit out a year for transferring then his eligibility will be up by the time he becomes eligible, so to say. he's trying to take advantage of that rule where you can have immediate eligibility if you've transferred for graduate school. i think they closed that loophole after a year [we call it the mundy rule at michigan since ryan mundy transferred to west virginia and all of a sudden became a decent db] but that paulus is going to argue that it applies to him because it's an entirely different sport. or something like that. i don't claim to know the specifics. ultimately, i bet his best bet is to just stay at duke if football's that important to him.

I don't know the specifics either, but my gut instinct is that he now considers football a better pro option for him than basketball (I could've told him that four years ago, but I digress). If that's the case, Duke probably isn't a good option if Cutcliffe is looking at him for WR rather than QB.

If Paulus wants to be a starting QB at the Division I FBS level, I think his best bet is to transfer either to a non-BCS school or to a school which just graduated a starting QB. As I said before, if he wants additional experience before going to the NFL, I think he might be smart to look at either the Arena League or the CFL.

my specifics i mean they closed that loophole, but the thought is that paulus would petition on the basis of it being an entirely different sport. i doubt they'll grant it, which is why i said he probably should stay at duke.

as far as which school to attend, michigan seems to fit in the sense the job is [most likely] a freshman's and his primary competition is supposedly going to come from another freshman. playing psychologist, i'm willing to guess his motivation for looking into michigan is playing for a storied program. i get that a lot of people hate the team, but you can't deny its history. imagine playing both duke basketball and michigan football.

Not hating on Michigan (not in this thread, anyway), just looking at it from Paulus' perspective. Holding a clipboard on the sidelines isn't gonna do much to prepare him for the next level. And he's only got one shot to earn the starting job. Most of the Michigan fans here don't seem to think he can beat out Forcier, so for Paulus, what would be the point in going to Michigan?

i sort of agree with Terry. finish your Duke degree and hire a QB coach, work out on your own or for Cutcliffe, make some connections. overall, seems goofy to me....more a vanity play than anything else. if, as Terry says, the endgame is REALLY playing pro football then there are straighter lines between point A and point B than t-ferring to Michigan for one year.

since the UM guys are in the hizzy, what's the story on this WR Toney Clemons who may or may not be transferring to Colorado (not sure what the latest on this is....whether Hawkins has offered or what)....i read earlier in the week that Clemons does (IIRC) have an Oregon offer and would come to CU but if there's no offer he's a Duck. I don't see how Hawkins doesn't offer the kid....CU had only 4 WRs suit up for 2/3 WR sets for their first spring scrimmage yesterday.....group been hit hard by injuries, academics, attrition, and transfer. not much of a depth chart there for the 12th and 10th rated offense in the conference over the last two years under the helmsmanship of Cody, Le Fils.

Clemons was top 15 type WR in the same recruit-o-sphere as Dez Bryant and some others, no?

I honestly have no memories of Clemons' time at UM. He's gone, but the position is a rare one in that UM has good depth at wr. No worries, hope he does well wherever he goes.

clemons is terrell pryor's cousin in some sense. and he was a highly-rated hs prospect recruited by lloyd carr. dickrod had him playing a little in the slot last year behind odoms, but now that there's a lot of depth there clemons made a good decision for himself. just an issue of a bad fit for the system and both sides have been all "we like each other but it's a bad fit." purely amicable.

I don't think anyone's insulted that Clemons bailed. I don't see this one as a transfer because of the coach or system. Mallett, yes, but this is the more common "burried on the depth chart" version. He hasn't done enough to get playing time so take off and go get some. I wish him well and not to speak for Mclub but I think the tone of his original take was positive as well.

But the notion that Cincy is a better program now or ever is beyond a stretch.

if you spent more time reading and less time copy editing you'd have easily picked up on my point that clemon's recruiting visit was initially reported in that article as OMGmountains!, and ja the coaches are nice. if that's the selling point why even bother with cincy and whatever coach they dredge up next year just in time for clemons to resume his eligiblity. it was a quip, friend.

no one's insulted clemons decided to leave. the coaches felt he worked best in their offense as a slot receiver and that two or three other players fit even better. he thinks he works best in an entirely different offense and went looking for it. good for him, genuinely.

the issue michigan fans have [as well as other fans when their teams are misrepresented in the national press] is when national hacks use their superficial understanding of a situation - usually informed by some other hack's superficial understanding - to wag their finger at something they're wholly clueless about. like the whole "loss of family values" meme they let some 20-year-old lazy malcontent write for them, paying no attention to the fact it was a claim leveled by someone so eager to play for his team's archrival toward a guy who gave him an unconditional release that allowed him to even play for evil empire. so ja, clemons is so uncomfortable with dickrod that they say glowing things about each other in the newspaper and he still hangs around schembechler hall and takes part in football activities not called practice.

Cincy is a tier 1 Big East program right now, N'western is a pretty competitive bowl team; the jury's still out on Minny but I'll say they're at least on L'ville's level right now.

Paulus will at least put some people into seats early on at the Dome. If he does well everyone will wonder if he could have saved the program from its dive. Marrone hasn't much choice.
BTW--the Black Bears for whom I played my college ball actually beat Miss State a few years ago. They were originally scheduled to play in Tallahassee at FSU--but Miami had an open date and that was that. SU had the open date that day and Maine got hooked up with them. Wish I could go up for the game, but I just came back from CNY and a return is not an option.
