Give me a name

Post by poptart »

Who do you see your team taking with it's first round pick?

With the #7 overall pick, there are a number of ways Oakland could go ... including trading down.
Doubt that, though, as the old man just has never rolled that way.

Cable has been talking up O-Linemen, and there will be some potentially good tackles available at Oakland's spot, but I don't them burning their top pick on a hog.
They've already brought some new faces in at tackle and center this off-season.

Defense?

If Raji is there, which he very well could be, will the Raiders take him?

Could be.
But I'm guessing not.
I suspect Al thinks with 100% Kelly, Warren, Sands and Joseph, they can roll ok in the middle of the line.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a later pick used on another NT, though.

DE?
Brian Orakpo?
Everette Brown?

Could be, and I particularly like Brown.
I'm betting no, however.

LB Aaron Curry?
If he's there, I think Oakland might take him.
But I'm thinking he'll be off the board.

Oakland was HORRIBLE at WR last season and they've not yet made a move to bring a vet receiver aboard.
This leads me to the conclusion that Oakland is targeting a receiver in round one.

Receiving talent appears deep in this draft.

If Crabtree is there, I think Oakland likely takes him.
But I think he may be gone.

Maryland's Darrius Hayward Bey is very intriquing.
Great speed/size combo.

But not as polished as the guy I'm betting Oakland ends up drafting.

That guy is ...

Jeremy Maclin of Mizzou.

Big play guy, put up big numbers, great speed, a deep threat for Russell, strong kick return ability.

Yep, that's our guy, imo.

I think Maclin was great in college, but he's a little small in my opinion for "today's NFL WR". I can see him being the kick and punt return specialist, but jury's still out on if he can be an every down WR in the NFL. We'll see.

That being said, the WR spot is also a big need for the Titans. NOt sure he will last that long, but I'm hoping we end up with Percy Harvin. Like Maclin, he's not that "big NFL WR" but also like Maclin, his speed is his biggest asset. I can see a lot of spread style options in the Titan future with the speed of Harvin and Chris Johnson.

Steve Smith is 5'9", 185.
Roddy White is 6'0", 2008
Wes Welker is 5'9", 185
Reggie Wayne is 6'0", 198

Cliff Branch was 5'11", 170.

Maclin is 6'1", 200.

But your point IS well taken, anyway, IndyFrisco.
BIGGER receivers appear to stand a better chance of making it as every-downers in the NFL.

That's why I fear that Al might go with D.H. Bey, who has terrific size and speed.
But as I see him, I don't know that he has as much potential to be an IMPACT player as quickly as perhaps Crabtree or Maclin might.

But it's all a crapshoot, really, because none of us know for sure who's going to prove themself to really have the goods.

After setting an NFL record last year for the fewest sacks in a season with a pathetically measly 10, the Chiefs need a pass rusher in the worst way.

I hope they go after Brian Orapko, DE, Texas... but most think the best available player will be Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest and that's who they'll take.

Maclin's going to be a terrific NFL WR, btw.

Is that 6'1, 200lbs from the Mizzou program guide or the combine stat sheet? I'm too lazy to look it up

Thats still an average sized WR, so not too bad for the raiders. Reagrdless of who they draft, that rookie will have a turkey leg jammed in his rear on Thanksgiving.

Lot of scuttlebutt that Curry will go #1 to the Lions because Stafford won't sign a predraft deal. Sorry...

If the Chiefs stay at 3 I think they take Monroe or Curry. I think they find a way to trade down though. If they do trade down I can see them taking Brian Orakpo or Tyson Jackson. Maybe even Ray Maualuga if they trade down near the back of the first round.

Comparing Maclin to Harrison?

I dunno'.......

I was thinking more along the lines of Jerry Rice.

Not being a Mizzou homer or anything, (well yes, I am) but he made Chase Daniel look like an NFL QB.

And whoever winds up with Chase Coffman won't be disappointed either. That guy could be the next Tony Gonzalez.

I guess I should have included one of these  to properly convey the tongue in cheek effect intended.

Nobody seriously compares a rookie to a HoF'er...

...other than to say he has all the physical attributes necessary to be a great player.

The knocks I read on Maclin are ...

1. size

2. route running

3. blocking

He clearly can break a BIG PLAY from any point on the field.
He's tough, he sticks his nose in and makes catches in traffic, and he makes big yards after the catch.
He's not just a speed guy ... he's got some moves.

Whoever picks him is going to have a guy with a LOT of potential.

Wouldnt mind crabtree, though. I truly think The Count and Cable are counting on Walker's emergence this season and our young core of Miller, Schillens, and Higgins to step up big. I think we'll grab a WR in a later round by the name of Ramses Barden. The kid is a sleeper.

I'll take a flyer and say Denver parlays their 12th and/or 18th pick in the first round to trade up in an effort to land Sanchez-most likely to Seattle or Cleveland

rumor is they were very very impressed with Sanchez's workout

if they keep their current position, they'll likely snag DE Tyson Jackson from LSU....the Broncos are changing to a 3-4 defense and he'd be a nice fit in that configuration-they need help on defense in a big way

I'd be good with Rey.

I'd be good with us going defense, period, in round 1.

WR talent appears pretty deep in this draft.
Someone with pretty good potential will be available in rd 2 or even 3.

Are they changing this season? Or will they blend 3-4 and 4-3 formations for a year or so as they bring in personnel?

McDaniels wants to switch to the 3-4, but they have to have the personnel to do it, which is one of the reasons I think they may not opt to try and get Sanchez and hold their positions at 12 and 18....they need so much help on defense it's pathetic.....if they can get a bulldozer in the middle, they'll go to the 3-4 with a designate rush linebacker

A 3-4 is built from the inside out. Which makes me wonder why they wouldn't go for an NT like B.J. Raji or perhaps an LB who grades out in one of the 2 ILB spots. Defensive End in a 3-4 is a position that can be filled just about anywhere in the draft. The Steelers haven't spent a 1st rounder on a DE since the 80s for good reason.

I know this is off topic, but I see RJ and pops posting so...

I heard Nnamdi Asomugha on ESPN radio Monday morning... I saw him on some ESPN NFL show later that night. He was one of the most well spoken athletes I've heard in a long time. He presented cogent and excellent takes throughout. I was sort of shocked. I mean... he's a fucking Raiduh, afterall. RACK that guy. Excellent player and will definitely make for a great NFL analyst after his playing days are over.

Anyways... that is all.

The latest on the Lions...there's an offer on the table to Stafford and he has until Friday to take it or they'll go with Aaron Curry with the #1 pick. Curry has accepted the contract offered to him.

They should take Curry regardless. Stafford is not a franchise #1 overall pick to me. Who cares that he's "the best QB" of the draft.

I'm with you...Stafford is a candidate for the #1 pick because this isn't a draft with a sure-fire can't miss talent at the top. Curry is a very good player but even he's not a #1 pick. I really hope to hear soon that Stafford passes on the offer and Curry is announced as their guy. He's taking less money at the top of the draft and he wants to be a Lion...win-win in my book. Stafford might drop like a stone if he doesn't take the deal which makes me think, if he's such a "great prospect", why would he drop?

Yeah, sure looks like the Lions really fixed the brain trust by firing Millen. :meds: Don't feel too bad. At least it can't possibly get any worse.
They could be the first team in the modern era to have two winless seasons. That's always something to shoot for.

Lot of experts said that about Matt Ryan last season - you don't rebuild an 0-16 fan base at this point by taking the safe pick

The Lions' biggest holes on defense are at defensive tackle and middle linebacker. I really like Curry but he's essentially a similar player to Ernie Sims but he's a little bigger so they'd consider moving him to the Mike with Julian Peterson playing the Sam and Sims staying at the Will. They added Grady Jackson to the defensive line but he's not what he used to be and there really isn't another guy on the roster that can play with him inside and can command a double team and free up the Lions' linebackers to make plays. Their defensive line, as presently constructed, won't be able to stop the run nor will they be able to get after the QB on a regular basis. They have some decent edge rushers but nobody elite. The secondary is improved with the additions of Henry and Buchanon but neither guy is a true shutdown corner.

The one guy in this draft that would probably help them the most right away on defense is B.J. Raji but he's not worth taking at the #1 spot. If they were able to move down and take him in the top 5, that's better value. At #1, they're able to pick from whatever they want but the guys at their biggest need positions aren't the top prospects in the draft. A combo of Raji and Maualuga with those two first round picks would've been my dream scenario...it would give them the run stuffer in the middle of the line along with a physical and athletic middle linebacker. Their defense would be dramatically improved with those two. Maybe they can still get Maualuga at #20 if they take Stafford #1 and they can look at picking up a defensive tackle in the second round.
