Anybody Know the Long Beach Area?

I'll be staying at the Westin for a couple of nights next week and need some dining out suggestions.

Preferences for next week:

Seafood
Japanese
Vietnamese
Thai
Eyetalian
Any other personal favorites

I'm a sucker for that big boat when I'm in LB. I've eaten at The Reef a few times great food great digs. More of a place to dine for two, but you might get lucky and suddenly 'remember' that your 'office mate' is going too.

Check out Lashers on East Broadway. They have excellent food in a traditional "American" setting. Tell them Dave from Pittsburgh sent you. Also, check out the Belmont Brewing Company at the Belmont Pier - excellent microbrewery. There's a snazzy Italian joint right downtown on Pine, can't remember the name, but it's pretty damn good.

Christy (ppanther) used to live in LB. Don't know if she still does, but she'd be a good bet for helping you out here.

Down on the wharf there's a place called the Yard Arm (I think that's what it was called) that was really fun. It's the place with the crazy tall glasses of beer, for which the place is named.

Great "runs the gamut, menu wise, like Chile's or T.G.I. Friday's" style food, and if it's a warm, sunny day the people watching can be spectacular. Lotta Miami Vice drug runner lookin' speedboats parked right there, some of which were very cool.

Van was close, The Pub is called The Yard "House." Good food with 200+ Beers on tap. Nice bar. It's in the marina.

Seafood -- King's Fish House is good, but don't order the rare ahi burger, if they have it on special. Just don't. Trust me. Pine and Broadway. You could also try Parker's Lighthouse in Shoreline Village, though I've never been blown away by anything I ordered there. I might have just ordered the wrong stuff.
Japanese -- Wasabi. It's a chain, but kind of higher-end. Good sushi, teppanyaki if that's your thing. Good bar. Pine and Broadway.
Vietnamese -- If you want Vietnamese, stop somewhere in Garden Grove or Westminster. I can't recommend any place in particular, but Garden Grove is home to Little Saigon.
Thai -- There are lots of good takeout places, I don't remember what they're called. I don't really have any fav. downtown LB area sit-down Thai place.
Eyetalian -- PSU is remembering an Italian place from LONG ago. It's been gone for years. If you want FANCY Italian, there's a place called La Traviata on... um, something and 3rd. Just don't order the wild mushroom risotto, WAY too heavy on the porcini. If you're going from the Westin, turn right on Pine, left on 3rd, it will be 2 blocks up on your right on the corner, on the bottom of an old highrise apartment building.
Any other personal favorites -- Allegria on Pine just north of 1st -- awesome Sangria and delicious Paella. Rock Bottom is a chain but it has good house-brewed beer and it's walking distance from the Westin. George's Greek Cafe on Pine just north of 3rd is one of the best Greek places I've ever tried, it's cheap and very casual. Madison in Pine is pricey and has a DECENT menu, we used to go there all the time just for dessert. If you're going with others, share the chocolate sampler plate. All the chain places are down the hill -- go to Pine, turn left. PF Chang's, Dave's BBQ (YUMMY), Bubba Gump's, etc.

I no longer live in downtown LB, but one of the best things about living there (in a large building right on Pine and Broadway) was the ability to walk to so many great restaurants. *sigh* If you want to try any other areas, Belmont Shore is a good place to go. LOTS of good choices!! La Creperie is delicious but always way too crowded. Magic Lamp has to die for Lebanese food. There's another George's Greek Deli over there. Aroma Di'Roma for the best Gelato in 20 miles (at least).

Go a little farther down 2nd Street into Naples if you want exceptional, high-end Italian food. Nico's is AWESOME. It's one of the only places I'll ever order risotto, and trust me, even if you're full, order the ricotta cheesecake.

Actually PSU was probably thinking about a place I forgot, which is L'Opera -- Italian on Pine and 1st. I can't tell you if it's any good because I haven't been there, but it's usually pretty crowded.

For breakfast, POTHOLDER: approximate address is 3700 E. Broadway (at Euclid).

For Thai, BANGKOK CUISINE: approximate address is 3424 E. 4th St. east of Redondo.

La Traviata is great but bring your expense account.

If you want to join mvscal for chicken and waffles, there's ROSCOE'S on Broadway just WEST of Alamitos.

For seafood there's Captain Jack's on PCH in Sunset Beach or Walt's Wharf on Main St. in Seal Beach.

Good call by socal on Walt's Wharf. It's WAY better than King's Fish House, but you'd have to drive there. It's not too far, maybe 5-6 miles? And Potholder is definitely the best breakfast place in LB. Park Pantry is also good, but it's a little more 'usual' than Potholder.

For seafood there's Captain Jack's on PCH in Sunset Beach.

I must have driven by that place 50 times and always wondered if it was any good. May have to try it this time.

Might have to check out Little Saigon too, or the Spanish place that pp mentioned - Alegria? Do they serve tapas? Never been to a tapas bar before but definitely want to try.

I wish I could help you out here, but my time in Long Beach consisted of bars and late-night eating.

If you're gonna go to the Dubliner, expect a lot of drunkass college students. You won't be able to get a drink unless you got some girls with you. If you're gonna hit up a night spot, I would suggest Sgt. Peppers....cool piano bar right next door.

The Reef is a really nice place to dine. That would be my recommendation.

Alegria serves tapas, mostly it's a happy hour thing for them. If you want straight-up tapas at any hour, go across the street to Sevilla (Pine between 1st and Broadway). Tapas is all they do. I've never been there, it's relatively new... but I'm sure it's pretty good. (That's assuming it's still there, I haven't been downtown in awhile.)
