In a nutshell, go ahead and manage that punt play and that place kick, sans any use of hands.

See, hands snap the ball. Hands catch the ball. Hands direct the ball into place, so that the place kicker or punter may kick the ball. The only part of the process which doesn't involve the use of hands on the ball is the actual kick itself, and even there the punter or kicker are allowed to hold the ball and either run with it or throw it.

Using...their hands. Remove the ability to use their hands and you don't have punting, place kicking or football, at all.

So, your point again?

They do however need to cross midfield. If the ball is in the vicinity of the goalmouth then re-setting the attack by kicking the ball all the way to midfield or beyond isn't going to do squat.

Those defenders at least need to move up a bit, to become truly involved in the action. What they do when they're back at the midfield stripe or beyond is of no consequence, not when the ball and the action is in and around the goalmouth.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. That play BEGAN with a long kick, followed by a header. We've been talking about a scrum in front of the goal mouth. If a scrum in front of the goal mouth leads to someone kicking the ball all the way back out to midfield or beyond (which is what I keep saying) that's a completely different type of play.

How fucking difficult is this to understand?? Simply showing me a random play of a long-ish kick followed by a header has nothing to do with what we've talking about, which is the ball being in the goal mouth, with a large grouping of players fighting over it. In your play there the players were spread out, because the play originated from somewhere near midfield.

Why not just show me a clip of a Franco Harris blast up the middle, to demonstrate the brilliance of Jack Lambert.

Take a look at the second goal in this video. Defender saved it off of the line in a "scrum" as you say, made a run, made a pass from the left that switched point of attack to the right, header back to the middle of the box, goal.
