Annual "What I'd like to see" thread
Despite an inglorious end to the season in the Rose Bowl, PSU really surprised me last year - in a number of positive ways.
The running game, long flawed, seems to have really turned a page. Going in to 2009, we have two excellent RBs with a lot of experience. In my opinion, if Royster can stay healthy, he'll be the best back in the conference, and Green is very talented. The OL loses a lot of experience, but there are some great kids still there, and we've finally built up some depth.
Clark is a great QB in my opinion. Sure, he has a lot to improve upon, but I think it's been a long time since we had an experienced kid coming back who is blessed with all of the tools he needs. Not only that, but while Jay Paterno's personal success is tied up with the QBs HE has developed, I don't think Joe is in a position to restrain the offense. I saw a diverse offense last season that I didn't think I'd see while Joe was still around - I was wrong.
While we lose three good WRs, we gain more playing time with some kids that have more size - and for once, PSU's passing game was developed enough that the kids stepping up have had a fair amount of experience.
I think the real question mark for me will be the defensive secondary. Not only do we have some really green kids, we also have an area of the team where Joe still asserts a lot of control - that is, his extremely conservative tendencies are fully in effect. Couple this with the fact that the whole nation saw a clinical dissection of that scheme, and the lack of reaction from the staff within the game, it's not going to be a mystery where we will be attacked and where teams will surely find success.
I am not comfortable with games where our defense is asked to win, particularly our pass defense. I still think we'll go as far as our offense can take us - if they bog down, then we will be at a loss.
What I'd like to see is for Tom Bradley to get out the Jerry Sandusky film. The defenses Jerry used to call were very flexible; the team could adjust pretty easily within the scope of a game. There are many opponents where the soft zone works well...but against teams that can pass protect a bit, I'd like to see some tighter coverage and more pressure from the LBs and maybe a safety now and again.
Again, I have a lot of confidence in Clark, and he does in himself. All told, 10-2 is much better than 3-9...I think we can contend for the conference championship again.

Re: Annual "What I'd like to see" thread
With this USC team, everything will hinge on QB play. How quickly will the full playbook be able to be executed properly?
So, far, it's looking more and more like Corp will begin the season as the starter, but that Barkley will soon supplant him, becoming that rare commodity at USC: a true freshman, starting at QB.
I'd like to see Barkley win the job, from Day 1. I don't want to see a mid-season switch, and I don't want to see Barkley sitting on the bench for a year or two while Corp plays this year and next year. If Barkley is going to be The Man, then let's get this thing started right away.
I wouldn't mind letting him sit behind an established star, but Corp is a first year starter. He hasn't proven anything, and Barkley is the future.
Supposedly this will be the single best O Line during Pete's tenure. Very possible, since they return the entire crew, and they're still very young up front. I believe only one of the starters is a senior, and unlike last season when they were a bunch of kids who were thrown together and told to figure it out, now they all know their roles and they're all experienced in playing together as a unit.
Had Sanchez stuck around, USC's offense would've been unstoppable this season, especially with ALL their RBs returning, along with their best receivers.
As it stands now, I expect USC to beat people into submission on the ground, which will set up the play-action passing game. I don't expect them to use the pass as their main weapon, and to set up the run, as they did last season.
Towards that end, I'd like to see Joe McKinght get healthy and stay healthy, for the first time in his career at USC. If he can manage it, USC will again have a bit of that Reggie Bush-Lendale White inside-outside one-two punch.
They're just loaded in the running game.
Since this is a "What I'd like to see" thread, I'm still in disagreement about the way Pete uses the running backs. I'd like to see them ditch the rb-by-enormous-committee thing. With this O Line, I'd like to see them settle on one back, for a 1200 yard season, with a second back being the second explosive option.
Bush-White, or Darren McFadden-Felix Jones.
In order for McKnight to fulfill either role, he'll need to not only be healthy, he'll also need to overcome his occasional fumble-itis.
Since it's the most unstoppable play in CF, I'd also like to see them use the TE over the middle more. Between USC's wideouts and their running game, the middle of the field will be completely open to the TE, and I'd like to see another Fred Davis-type season emerge from that position.
One thing I don't expect to see, but would love to see, would be for the kickoff team to again have a weapon like they had with David Buehler, who kicked every single kickoff deep into the endzone, or even beyond the endzone. That was a huge advantage for USC's D, having the other team's O always having to go the whole distance, following any USC score.
It was like scoring twice in your top of the inning, and then having you pitcher come out and shut them down one-two-three in the bottom half, to solidify your lead.
If USC's D then did their job they'd usually be handing Sanchez & Company a short field, and quickly a large lead would be built.
That's a very underrated thing in football, the ability to always makes your opponent start from their own twenty yard line. Against a team with a killer kickoff return game, like a Florida, it's almost akin to making an AL team play without their DH in the middle of the line-up.
Defensively?
Hell. Everson Griffen needs to step up again, the way he did as a freshman, to the point that this season he becomes an All-American DE. He needs to kill the QB, every week. He can't have a repeat of his iffy sophomore season.
Chris Gallippo ws the #1 LB recruit in the country, two years ago. With Maualuga gone, now is his time to step in and keep it going. USC will be very young in the front seven, and he'll need to take charge of the center of the defense. He needs to provide the fire, and become the heart.
More than anything, I want USC's front seven to continue getting pressure on the ball, freeing up the secondary to be headhunters and ballhawks. If USC's secondary doesn't have to commit to the run, or to blitzing the QB just to get pressure, then watch the fuck out.
They're going to devastate some people this year. If Taylor Mays and his buddies stay healthy, and the front seven can create any push at all, nobody will be able to pass on USC. People will be severely risking the turnover, every time they attempt anything beyond ten to fifteen yards.
With a wet-behind-the-ears QB and a young D, I just want USC to escape The Shoe with a W. Any ol' W will do. I'll take a 3-2 victory, if need be.
Other than that, I just want ten wins during the regular seaon, and those wins need to include victories over Ohio St, ND, UCLA and Cal. Then they need to win the stupid Rose Bowl again.
I'll accept a loss at Oregon, plus one other oddball loss to someone like Arizona St. I'd like to see them break that little losing streak in the state of Oregon, but goddammit, I'd much rather lose to Dins than to m2 so Cal is the one I really don't wanna lose, besides the Ohio St game and the two rivalry games.
11-2, with a Rose Bowl win and wins in all their big games, that sounds about right. It also sounds about the most I can hope for, with a new QB.
A trainwreck season would be a third loss, especially if it's to either Cal or ND. Add a loss in the bowl game, and it's just gory.
No way in hell I see them running the table, not with this much youth. 12-1, with another BCS bowl game win and only another weird loss to someone like ASU, that would be about the ceiling of expectations and hopes for this season.

Jahvid Best doesn't even get off the bus whenever Cal plays USC. None of Cal's poncey little ponies ever do. Either Kevin Ellison tells 'em what time it is, and they turtle for the rest of the game, or they come down with a severe case of vagitosis, to the tune of queefing out 30 yards on 13 carries.

I gotta say, though, this is a lot like cutting off one's nose to spite their face. What fun is it if USC beats Cal, if you're not around afterwards to whine about it? Beating on up you when you can't defend yourself with 3rd down stats, pictures of the SF Bay and videos from 2003 just takes all the wind out of all our sails.
It's like whacking an empty pinata.
Similarly, if once in your life you manage to get over, and you actually win, how much fun will it be for you if I'm not around to take my beating?
Come to think of it, I think I see your game. In couching it as "honoring a bet" this is just your cowardly way of having to show up and take your medicine.

Btw, I just watched that entire Jahvid Best video. Lotsa nice cutbacks, lotsa fast forwarding to make him look even faster, lotsa full-on ghetto garbage music loaded with n-bombs.
Nearly eight minutes long, that video, and I gotta say, it was just chock full o' goodness.
Nearly eight minutes long, that video, and not even a single fucking picture, much less an actual highlight, from his stellar 13 for 30 game against USC.
Sure were boatloads of long runs against Wazzou, Washington and Stanford, though!

Okay, B-t-H...
Instead of its usual turgid juicyness, Jahvid's piercing infection caused his little quitter in the boat to swell up and become only vaguely moist, and really kinda grainy, which, for a clit, is kind of a weak and sickly state of being.

psssst, m2...
Come signing day, USC will blow Cal out of the water when it comes to star average, number of four stars, number of five stars and overall recruiting class ranking.
As for your 19 year old making Taylor Mays look like a punk...
pssst...
If he were really that good, he wouldn't have signed with Cal. He went to Cal because they promised him something USC, Florida and Texas wouldn't: playing time.
Wanna make any bets that this kid also doesn't become a two time All American and a top 10 NFL draft pick, like Taylor Mays?
Uh huh.
Maybe you oughtta just hope the kid doesn't become another Cal Football Hall Of Famer, like Zach Follett: a late 7th round draft pick, who never beat USC.

Sam, what "further probation" are you talking about, regarding Bama? Were they already under probation, before this textbooks nonsense? If not, I didn't hear where this little textbooks penalty included any probation.
Also, on your last item, sorry, but you won't be getting your wish there. Unless some key people get injured this year's title game is going to be Florida vs the Big XII champ. Before USC would be allowed into the game they'd need to end the season with one less loss than Florida and the Big XII champ.
USC isn't running the table, and even if they do they may still not get in. Same with the Big 10 winner, or anyone else. If Florida and the Big XII winner also run the table everyone else will again be left out in the cold.
USC will lose at least once this year, which will require those other two teams to lose twice, which just ain't happening.
Face it, this entire season will be just one big exhibition season. This will be a two game season: The Red River Shootout, which will decide who plays Florida, and then Florida vs the winner of the RRS.
Everyone else is simply filling out the tv schedule.

1. Clausen blossom in much the same manner that Brady Quinn blossomed during his junior season.
2. ND's offensive line finally playing up to its potential. Or at least, playing up to, oh, say, Rutgers' offensive line's potential.
3. Either Allan, Hughes or Grey develop into a legitimate feature back, or alternatively, this group forming a satisfactory tailback-by-committee.
4. ND at least returning to its form from 2005 and 2006, i.e., no more losses to teams we should beat.
Put those together (a big if, I know), and there's potential for at least a 10-2, possibly even a 11-1 season. If we get a satisfactory result this year, this team could be poised for some great things in 2010.

A 40 lb arm brace? I'd like to see that......oh wow, he had his ankle taped. Hey dumb ass guys don't run with their elbow....then again with a brace that big I can understand how he can't reach top speed. Then throw in all that tape which weighs him down more.....Yeah, I get it now.Post a pic of "Jet Blue" during the $C game without a 40 pound arm brace on... and without his ankle taped up to look like "Frankenstein".

Sam, maybe I'm mistaken, but the links I've read only mentioned a piddly little fine and the expunging of wins from their record, during years when they sucked anyway.
I haven't read anything about any three year probation.
Probation, regarding what? What potential penalty does this probation carry?

m2, you've used many nics over the years.
It's a simple question: Do you agree to a complete banishment, including any and all nics, past, present or future?
Also, when does the banishment end? By "rest of the year" are we talking the rest of the 2009 calender year, or does it include bowl season, or does it go all the way to the beginning of the following season?
Lastly, is the banishment just from BTPCF, or does it include all T1B boards, including the main forum?
Simple questions. Answer them without any sarcasm or spin. Just answer the questions.

If stoolio's not around when USC kicks a craterhole in their piss-encrusted beargina flaps, I'm going to be PISSED.
Re: Annual "What I'd like to see" thread
Mgo, what, you don't think that's his sole reason for doing this?
Rght about now I'd call that game pretty close to a Pick 'Em, with USC being at best a six or seven point favorite.
With Cal's returning experience, home field advantage and USC's complete lack of experience at key spots I don't consider that one a gimmee at all. I consider that one, the Ohio St game and the Oregon game as the only three obvious loss possibilities in 2009. Any others, I'd consider to be a major upset.
So, of couse, what does m2 do? He offers himself a win-win bet. If Cal wins, which they very well may, he gets to gloat. He even threw out the little addendum that maybe he'll let me stick around, if Cal wins.
Gee, ya' think? Ya' think m2 wouldn't want to have me around if Cal wins?
If Cal loses, he's merely honoring the bet. He doesn't have to stick around and take his lumps.
Seems pretty fucking obvious to me that he's just giving himself a convenient out.
It works both ways, though. If he accepts the terms of the bet, and Cal wins, I'm gone. He doesn't get to beat on me either.
I think the whole idea is stupid, 'cause who really benefits from these things, but I'm going to treat it as the real thing.

Do you want in on the bet... Mr. Magoo ???MgoBlue-LightSpecial wrote:If stoolio's not around when USC kicks a craterhole in their piss-encrusted beargina flaps, I'm going to be PISSED.
This is last years game in LA where the first $C TD bounced off the ground and was called a TD. Cal's TD that was called back because of man down field.... "when there was no Cal linemen down field when the ball was thrown." Even with the LA Trojan TD with a couple minutes left in the game.... it would have been a 10-10 tie. This doesn't take into account the dynamics of the game would have been WAY different if Cal had a 10-3 lead and the Toejams would have been under a great deal of pressure to score being down by 7.
Questionable Calls by Pac-10 Refs from the 2008 Cal-USC Game
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/pQWDWFnq-UQ&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/pQWDWFnq-UQ&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/youtube]
All of this with Riley only playing 1 half of the game in his first year as a semi-starter and getting jerked around all year long by Tedford due to his man-love for Nate Longshore. The Toejams were loaded last year and snuck away with a win in... LA.
This year... Cal has their entire D back except for the linebackers and the back-ups for those guys are faster and stronger. Cal will have the best D in the conference and will have a seasoned QB and will be playing at home.
From the PAC 10 beat writer.... Ted Miller
http://myespn.go.com/blogs/pac10/0-9-12 ... ornia.htmlCal will have a good defense next fall. Perhaps the best in the Pac-10. It's got eight starters back from a unit that, in 2008, ranked fourth in the nation in forced turnovers (34) and sixth in the nation in forced three-and-outs (48).
Here are some scary stats from last years team... with Nate Longshore going 3 and out at a rate that the team shouldn't have won a single game last year.
Category...............................No........NCAA Rank (of 119)
Interceptions...... ...................24.............3
Opp. Comp. Pct.....................51.6............4
Opp. Red Zone Scoring Pct......68.2............2
Opp. third-and-7+ Conv. Pct.....14.............2
Forced TO..............................34.............4
Points off TO..........................122............4
Yards/Play..............................4.4............9
3-and-outs.............................48.............6
This defense is going to be scary good.
Oh yeah, SUC's only QB with any D-1 experience may not even be eligible to play this year.
U$C QB Mustain may be ineligible
You saw what a "young" Cal D did to Marc Sanchez and company in LA last year.
This D is a year older and that much faster and will be playing in "Strawberry Canyon" against a LA Trojan team that has a "QB" without a single game of D-1 experience.
You in for the "bet".... Mr. Magoo ???

Mustain is now the 3rd string QB, so WGARA?
Btw, m2, answer the fucking questions I gave you. Why is it always like pulling teeth, trying to get a straight answer from you? Quit dodging and answer the questions; specifically, clearly and without sarcasm.
Oh, and while you're whining about Nate Longshore vs Kevin Riley, as if it would've made any difference, look at what each QB did in the game...
California Passing
C/ATT YDS AVG TD INT
N. Longshore 11/15 79 5.3 0 0
K. Riley 4/16 59 3.7 0 1
Team 15/31 138 4.5 0 1
Longshore played MUCH better than Riley, who actually threw more passes than Longshore in the game.
Quit whining. You scored 3 points, and you didn't deserve those 3 points either. You only got those off of a drive which continued as the result of a brutal roughing the passer call on 3rd and long, otherwise you had to punt. That bad call was effectively a turnover for you. You get shut out if it isn't for that call.
Answer the questions.
In fact, you know what? I don't feel like dicking around with your childsh crap and I actually want you here after the game so either answer the questions in the next post you address to me, or the bet's off.
Question 1: Do you agree to a complete banishment, including any and all nics; past, present and future?
Question 2: When does the banishment end? By "rest of the year" are we talking the rest of the 2009 calender year, or does it include bowl season, or does it go all the way to the beginning of the following season?
Question 3: Is the banishment just from BTPCF, or does it include all T1B boards, including the main forum?
There they are. Three easy questions. No gray areas. The first answer is a yes or no, period. If you agree to it and then you come back and try to sneak in again under some other lame troll then the Admins ban you for good. The second and third questions, however you answer them, that's fine with me. I'll agree to whatever you decide. I just want the terms spelled out clearly, right now, in front of everybody.
Again, just so we're clear here, I don't feel like dicking around with your childsh crap and I actually want you here after the game, so either answer the above bolded questions in the next post you address to me, or the bet's off. No exceptions. You have one more chance, or the bet's off.

Everything Terry said. ND needs a running game for this offense to be effective. I think the oline will be much better with Verducci coaching them.
I'd like to see that speed Weis has recruited start to pay dividends, especially on defense.
And m2, good luck with oxygen. ND already has the top OLB/DE in the country in Chris Martin. When was the last time Cal got one of the top 2 players from the state of California? If you count Martin as a Cali kid, it could be argued that ND has done it the past 4 years.

That's because historically, Cal is the service academy on other teams schedules.
While ND may lose to USC, they won't to Stanford.
Chris Martin bitch slapped every lineman he went up against at this years and last years rising stars camp.
In the last 4 years, Weis has beaten USC as many times as Jeff Tedford.
