What does Nebraska and Dook have in common?

Post by TheJON »

This is a college football trivia question. Just saw a stat that was incredibly shocking.

Nebraska and Dook have something in common on the gridiron. Can somebody tell me what that is?

I bet Danimal knows. He's got to. I'm banking on him knowing.

Dook has never had a black coach. Funny, I don't think they've ever had a black men's basketball player either- well, unless you count Grant Hill.

neither has beaten a ranked team in give or take the same time period. Callahan's record against teams .500 or better, let alone ranked teams, was dreadful.

They both play VA Tech and Kansas in 2009.

Each lost to VA Tech last season.

Both teams played Clemson last season.

Ok, well no Husker fan showing up to give the answer, so.........

Of the 65 BCS teams, 63 have beaten at least 1 team ranked in the Top 19 of the BCS since 2001. The only 2 that have not are Dook and Nebraska. My how the mighty have fallen (Nebraska that is!).

I'm going to call bullshit on that. Nebraska beat Oklahoma in 2001 and OU finished 11-2, which I would assume would put them in the top 19 of the BCS that year.

Where did you hear that?

SINCE 2001.........so that means they haven't beaten a Top 19 team since 2001, which they haven't.

It's a stat from Phil Steele, actually.

I'm assuming it's based on the team's ranking at the time the game was played. I think it's a fantastic tidbit of trivia. Let's not try to pick it apart too much.

So I wonder what exactly happened in 2001 to set this downward spiral in motion...

Oh yeah!

Iowa State would also be on this list if not for Iowa's epic meltdown in the second half of the 2002 Iowa-ISU game.

Speaking of ISU.....

Another CFB tidbit....

Dan McCarney has the worst record vs AP Top 25 teams of all-time (minimum 20 games). He was heading into either his last year or next to last year at ISU, a combined 1 and 40 vs ranked foes. That win, of course, was the above mentioned game. That was one of the most depressing losses we've ever had. 24-7 halftime lead. Just walking up and down the field at will. Fred Russell had over 100 yards rushing at half and didn't play in the 2nd half due to injury, neither did Bob Sanders. Dallas Clark missed a block that led to a safety on just a very lazy play after Jermelle Lewis returned the kickoff to our own 4 yardline because the dumbass just ran out of bounds after catching it. It was that safety that sparked the Clones and then Brad Banks fumbled to balls (neither were forced), and our all-world offensive line somehow forgot how to block. That game still pisses me off. Would have been a 12-0 football team if not for that second half collapse. I will never forget leaving Kinnick Stadium in complete shock and no one could believe what had just happened. Fuckin' Dan McCarney......couldn't beat anyone but Iowa- his alma mater!!

Well I just saw the thread so sorry for the late entry.
JON, I did know the answer as it's been discussed on local radio talk since Steele's mag came out.

First it's fine to pick out the Top 19, kinda selective as most of these trivia yarns are based on Top 20 or 25. Whatever makes a point I guess. Next time someone makes a point on a "guess what" maybe it could be the last time a team beat a team ranked higher than... oh, lets so 11th....
Make no mistake we sucked dog balls under Callahan and Solich wasn't much better, however let's "pretend" we go by traditional standards, NU did beat a #20 #23 & #24 since the 2002 season.
And a f*ckin' fumble let #5 Texass off the hook in '06.

But here's the kicker, the f*cking Big 12 North STINKS! and Colorado is a guilty as anyone Mr. 62-36.
See it's pretty damn hard to beat a rated team when 5 of your annual opponents can't find they're way into the...uhmmmm... Top 19....
In the 35 games NU played against North teams since 2002 only in 5 of those games did NU play a team ranked 19th or higher. Only 2 in the Top 10.
Kinda hard to beat a Top.. uhmmm.... 19th ranked or higher team when you play LESS than one a year in your division, which is 50% of your schedule.

Hey fellas...I promise we'll be the best we've been since 2001.
There's some payback comin'.

Hipp is pretty hard to beat. NU went back to back at I back with Hipp and Jarvis Redwine, another fairly classic "name". at the same time, OU had Elvis Peacock and Horace Ivory. good era for names and option backs.

97% of my posts have no mention about ISU, dickhead.

However, 97% of the posts on CyclownFanatic are about Iowa. Odd isn't it?

I do have 1 question, dickface.........

Why are you ISU fans so god damn jealous of Iowa? I can understand being jealous of USC, Florida, Texas, etc.... But Iowa? Really? Don't get me wrong, we've got a good football program. Better than most, light years better than ISU.......but I don't think we've done enough to have serious pen15 envy of us.

Post by TheJON »

By the way, Minor.........

What do YOU suggest Kirk do? Believe me, I'm tired of all the arrests and citations. It's getting ridiculous, but seriously.......what can the coach do? The problem is the culture of Iowa City. I know this. I lived there 4 years in college. Let's face it.....it's a city that has a government that does not care one bit about changing anything because they're raking in the dough from all these bars.

PED mall had something like 29 bars within a few blocks of each other back when I lived on Market Street (pissing distance to the Ped Mall). Do you have any idea how difficult it is to avoid that when you're 18-22 years old and living on your own for the first time? It doesn't matter if you're a football player or a chemistry major.........if you live in Iowa City, you're going to be down at the Ped Mall on the weekends or for Thirsty Thursdays. Look at all the drink specials they have, and the gimmicks these bars have. Thirsty Thursdays, F.A.C. (Friday After Class), 21 pitchers on your 21st at Jake's, 18 year olds allowed in most of the bars, etc.... That's where all the U of I students hang out. Doesn't matter what your crowd is. There's a bar/club for everyone.

Now, imagine that atmosphere packed with 18-22 year olds and tell me exactly what Kirk Ferentz can possibly do to avoid his players getting DUI's, PAULA's, and public intox?

Here's his options.....

1.Suspend the player for long periods of time. Sounds like a good idea. Well, except for the fact that it's a bit silly to start dropping the hammer on 18-22 year old kids for ACTING LIKE 18-22 YEAR OLD KIDS.

2.Kick the player off the team. Good luck ever recruiting anyone if you do that. Coach is making $3 million per year. The fans put a lot of pressure on him to win. How on earth do you think the guy is going to be able to recruit ANYONE if he's booting players for getting a fucking public intox????

3.Suspend the player for a game or 2. This has been his typical punishment. You may disagree with it, but that's because you're an ISU fan.

There's a drinking problem in Iowa City. There's absolutely no doubt about it. When I was in college, I didn't care. I wasn't old enough to care. I just liked going out and having a good time. And it was so easy to do that in Iowa City. I never got a public intox, a DUI, or any other ticket/arrest. Why didn't I? Because I was lucky. Does that make me more responsible than these football players? Not really. Like I said, I just got lucky. I can't even estimate how many times I probably deserved a public intox or how many times before I turned 21, I drank a beer at a Ped Mall establishment. So like heck if I'm going to sit here and criticize these football players for doing what I did!

But until the city steps in and stops letting the 18-20 year olds in the bars and actually gets serious about who they let have a liquor license (seriously, have you ever met any of these bar owners in IA City? They're scumbags), I just don't know what you can possibly do to prevent this.

You ban players from the Ped Mall or kick them off the team for getting arrested for Public intox and you can't recruit. If you can't recruit, you can't win. If you can't win, you're fired. I'm tired of all the criticisms Kirk gets for this. If you want to question his coaching abilities, go right ahead. But for you Cyclone fans to sit there and act like he's some sort of scumbag because of things he can't control, it's bullshit. Kirk is as classy as they come. He's one of the friendliest guys you could ever meet. Dude cries after big wins. He donates hundreds of thousands of dollars to the university and other charities. He never says a bad thing about anyone. He doesn't cheat. He does things the right way. He doesn't run up the score, he's loyal to his coaches/players (this is my main criticism of him at times) etc... I could go on and on about Kirk's character.

You ISU fans aren't ripping on Kirk for his character. You're ripping on Kirk because your team sucks fucking donkey balls and it's your way of feeling better about your program by ripping Iowa and you'll look for anything over in Iowa City to talk shit about. You're full of shit if you even begin to attempt to argue otherwise. Your program sucks shit. You'll never be good. Your coach will never recruit because he's a bum that no one wanted. And that pisses you bitter a-holes off. So instead of talking about ISU, you find ways to bring down the Hawks. Well, guess what, dickface.......it ain't gonna work. We'll always be better than you. We'll have more wins, more tradition, more success, go to better bowls, have higher attendance, and we'll do it with a coach that has class despite what you faggots think.

PENIS ENVY IS FOR LOSERS! Just sayin'.......

And come September in Lames.....

Iowa 34
Clowns 10

And final records......

Iowa 10-2 (maybe 9-3)
ISU 3-9 (4-8 if they get lucky)

IT'S A HAWKEYE STATE, DICKFACE! Now go fuck yourself.

Oh, and another thing homo......

We've got graduation rate scoreboard too....

Has there ever been a single year in which ISU's football team even came CLOSE to Iowa in graduating players? I doubt it. Maybe that's why our athletic programs have more money than ISU.

Your fans end up at Wal-Mart. Ours end up trying to find cures for cancer.

Wow! Three replies to me?

I agree it has to be the atmosphere. Those mean bartenders are forcing the players to drink, cruise on mopeds, rape and steal. That is great! It can't be the responsibility of the players to get a free ride and be expected to pull their heads out of their asses, it's got to be the city government. Kirk only makes 3 mil a year. How can anyone expect him to have control of his team? He doesn't even have control of his own sons. One lived in low income housing, the other busted not once but twice for public intox. I know, I know, Kirk suspended him and he missed a few games......wait ...he missed shit. He missed April and May. But you are right, nothing screams class like rape cover up and 26 arrests in 26 months.

To quote Kirk, "What a great state we live in."

Looks like I struck a nerve with Captain Kirk's fanboy .

During the time I typed this, another Hawkeye suspension had ran its course.
