Most people are already doing whatever they can to reduce their AGI and hence their taxes. If you're not doing everything legal to reduce your tax burden, you should be.

If the tax increase influences some people to donate more to tax exempt charities, then it's a good thing. The impression I'm getting is that there are a lot of people who are talking about working less and making less, out of spite, to keep their AGI under $250,000. That's just dumb.

Thing about Social Security though is that, while it was a good concept at one time, it's been so screwed up by now that even I (your lovable liberal) am starting to think that the only way to save it is to scrap it and start over. At this point the notion that it is in any way separate from the rest of the tax (and spend) system is ridiculous. They've been raiding the trust fund to balance the general fund for years. Why should that burden fall disproportionately on lower wage earners?

It was never intended to disproportionately fall on anyone. It was supposed to be a form of supplemental income, which you could draw out based on how much you paid into it. It was originally supposed to work like an annuity, with payouts based on amounts collected and balanced using actuarial tables. Over the years, the payouts and benefits were raised, but the amount going into finance these benefits was not increased. Now, with the Baby Boomers sliding into retirement, things are getting desperate. Everyone knows that Social Security is a giant Ponzi scheme, where new money is used in the near term to pay off current debts. But the day of reckoning is coming.

I think the Social Security program should be scrapped too. But I don't think the people who have paid into it their entire life should get fucked out of their dough. We ought to pay them back their cash, over time, to the extent we can. Congress should close the Social Security program this year for new enrolles. They should freeze benefits and set aside money in our budget to pay for benefits at the current level, frozen for eternity. In 40 years, the current recipients would die off and the program would go out of existence. They would collect their funds paid in, which was the original deal.

If you wanted to start a properly organized, voluntary retirement trust fund for new enrollees at the same time, then so be it. But the cost to participate should reflect the cost of the benefits to be paid out. The government cannot keep lying to people, and saying it can take in only a few dollars from them, but agree to pay them a lifetime of benefits. If they vote to sock it to the rich, you'll see a dramatic reduction in the number of persons who qualify as rich. It is human nature, dog.

Part of the problem is that the gubmint taxes too much. The other part is the complexity of the system. One should pay taxes as a percentage of income. Period. What kind of car you drive or how much you pay in mortgage interest should have fukk all to do with your tax bill.

Trouble is, if they went to just personal income tax without a complex deduction system, many of the lobbyists would pick up and go home and the whores in DC would hate to see all their johns bag like that.

When will people learn that corporations do not pay taxes--people do. Corporations only become tax collectors for the government. The folks who purchase the corporation's goods and services pay the taxes through increased costs. A flat income tax is the way to go--but we'll never see it.

I guess they really do believe in a government that confiscates an individual's labor and income.
