We quit playing decent OOC schedules because we can't find teams to play us. West Virginia said no, Nebraska doesn't want to play. We scheduled Missouri for a home-and-home but they backed out of the contract at the last minute. Ferentz tries to schedule Pac-10 and Big East teams as much as possible. Big East is important because we recruit New Jersey area heavily. It's not easy to find quality opponents at a school like Iowa. That's not an excuse, it's a fact. The problem is you have to do a home and home and no coach wants to play Iowa because we're a good team and there's no recruiting benefit from playing us. No one outside this state recruits Iowa and so you don't need exposure here. Only reason we got Arizona to play us is because Stoops played at Iowa and he wanted to. Why would anyone decent want to play a win-lose game? If they lose to Iowa, they gain nothing from it in recruiting. If they beat Iowa, it's a nice win but still- no gain in recruiting. And Iowa needs exposure in certain areas so we try scheduling those areas but that limits the amount of quality teams we can play. Got UCONN on the schedule next year and Arizona again in 2011 I believe.

To be fair and honest, Jon has a point. Mizzou did back away from a home and home against Iowa. Not sure why. They should be a natural geographic rival much like Illinois, of which that "border battle" series is ending in 2010, I believe.

Iowa would've been the perfect replacement, albeit not so feasible to use a "neutral" site like St. Louis as with the Illini.

When teams schedule opponents it's gotta meet the criteria of one or some of the following.........opponent located in area your program wants to dip into recruiting, makes sense geographically, is a cupcake and just wants a payday, is against an elite program and would be a game of the week/year. Where exactly does Iowa fit in there?

On top of that, you have to realize we are absolutely not going to give up a home game to play anyone. We will only play 1 road game each year OOC. Our athletic department would NEVER allow us to schedule multiple road games. The only exception was Northern Illinois in 2007 we played at Soldier Field, but we shared the gate for that game. So, every other year our road game is Iowa State. That will never come off the schedule. So that leaves open just 1 road game every other year for which to schedule an opponent. There is no way we're getting a team to come to Kinnick without us returning to play them at their place.

We got Arizona because of Stoops. We're trying to schedule more teams up in the Northeast because Ferentz is recruiting up there heavily so that makes sense. West Virginia would not play us. We offered a home and home and they said no. Neither Nebraska nor Iowa really want to play each other despite the schools being so close because neither team gives a shit about recruiting in the other's area. It makes more sense for Nebraska to play a USC (even if they lose) because it will be a Primetime game and they could really benefit from it. Iowa/Nebraska would be big in this area but not nationally.

Like I said, Missouri backed out on us at the last minute.

Give me a list of top teams Iowa should play and I'll give you a reason why it would be almost impossible for us to schedule. First team you can take off your list is Oklahoma as Bob Stoops has stated he never wants to play Iowa.

Hell, Cal is scheduled to play @ OSU on September 15, 2012 with OSU coming to Berkeley in 2013 (date TBA). Cal may play the first two games that season on the road and open the new and improved Memorial Stadium with OSU.

Look for Cal.... to play more than "one" OOC game on the road in a single season.... and look for Cal to do it for more than recruiting reasons.

Fact is, though, that Cal football is an afterthought most years. Yeah, they might win 8 or 9 games once in a while, but, in the overall picture, they just don't matter. Contrary to what m2 thinks, I keep up with every game and every conference and Cal is sorta like South Carolina or Illinois or Maryland or Missouri. Ya' know? Decent team. Some good ballplayers. But nothing to be concerned about as far as the national picture.

Are you also trying to tell me that Missouri backing out on Iowa is just some made up thing Hawkeye fans use as an excuse why we can't play anyone despite the fact that a Mizzou fan in this thread backed my statements up??? Look.......we schedule Mizzou for 2006-2007. They backed out a few months before the 2006 season started. West Virginia had an open date, we tried to replace Mizzou with West Virginia. They didn't want to play. So we ended up with Syracuse in 2006 and Northern Illinois in 2007. This has been a constant problem with Iowa.

Facts aren't excuses. We're not an easy victory for ANYONE, and we're located in a state no team would want to dip into on the recruiting trail. And on top of that, we're a very good but not elite program so there would be no National Game of the Week type appeal to it. So why would anyone besides directional schools, Iowa State, and mid-majors want to play us? Where's the benefit for them??
