The problem isn't american engineering vs jap engineering. There are 2 major parts to it. American bean counters have tied the hands of american engineers. Fortunately, they have come to the realization that this is killing them and they have improved the situation. The other, more important part is the UAW's stranglehold on the big three which the foreign makers have avoided by treating their works well. This problem has been addressed somewhat in that even the UAW realizes that if they squeeze their golden goose too hard, it will eventually croak.

Personally, I don't see much difference in buying a Ford or a Hyundai, assuming a decent chunk of it was produced here and it was completely assembled here. I do, however have a really big problem with asking my grandkids to subsidize my new car purchases.

Which begs the questions...what fucking expertise does the UAW have running a business? Of course, it doesn't. That's why it has said it's off-loading its interests in GM ASAP.

Lower the price of something and more will get used. It is a fact. Aside from economics, there is the "lets go for a ride in our cool new car" factor.
