Mikey, compared to Jeff Beck, Govan couldn't sound much more dissimilar. He plays and sounds nothing like Beck, who's all percussive finger attacks and tremolo, with sharp, short, stacatto phrasing.

Govan's the opposite. He's much more fluid legato, and his techniques are far more varied. Their tones are wildly dissimilar, as well. Beck is all about stabbing you in the forehead with piercing upper midrange and treble, while Govan favors a much thicker, warmer and smoother tone.

Here are two instances where he does invoke Jeff Beck. In this first one, he doesn't play at all like Beck, and Beck couldn't even begin to do some of the things Govan does here, but he is playing to a Jeff Beck style backing track...



In this one, Govan does in fact try to play like a bunch of different famous guys, including their signature tones. He does Jeff Beck, at the 3:48 mark. Among the many people he does here, he flat out nails Eric Johnson, B. B. King, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Alvin Lee, EVH, Yngwie, Satch and Vai.

His Beck is pretty spot on, albeit too short. His Hendrix is way too slick for Hendrix. He has the compressed tone right, and he's got the spacey phase thing going, but Hendrix was never that slick of a player.

I think I said this before, but, it's like with SRV doing hendrix better than hendrix, except with GG, he's not limited. He does (fill in the blank) better than (fill in the blank) does.
