Nevertheless, the government opted to extend the company's 5-year, $189 million contract for another year.

Scientists familiar with the work, to be published Friday in the journal Science, said it provides fresh evidence that human activity is not only warming the globe, particularly the Arctic, but could even fend off what had been presumed to be an inevitable descent into a new ice age over the next several dozen millenniums.

The reversal of the slow cooling trend in the Arctic, recorded in samples of layered lakebed mud, glacial ice and tree rings from Alaska to Siberia, has been swift and pronounced, the team writes.

Earlier studies have also shown that the Arctic, more than the planet as a whole, has seen unusual warming in recent decades. But the new analysis provides decade-by-decade detail on temperature trends going back 2,000 years — five times further than previous work at that detailed a scale.

Several climate scientists said the study is most significant for showing just how powerfully the Arctic climate appears to be responding to a greenhouse-gas buildup that is having more complex and subtle mix of effects elsewhere around the globe. Old Aerosmith (i.e., 70's Aerosmith) = great rock and roll. Sweet Emotion, Walk This Way (original version), Dream On, Toys in the Attic, Train Kept a-Rollin', Back in the Saddle, etc. Need I say more?

Newer Aerosmith (i.e., late 80's-onward) = something else altogether. Angel, Love in an Elevator, Janey's Got a Gun, Take me to the Other Side, Sweet Taste of India, Walk This Way (version with Run-DMC), I'm sure there are others but I've probably successfully blocked them from my mind, at least for the time being. Again, need I say more?

As it turned out, the Run-DMC video was a harbinger of things to come for them, not a sign that the old Aerosmith was back. Hindsight being 20/20, they should have stayed retired.

The Fall OF The West is not the same as "Armageddon"--unless you are in fact a Christer, etc., and then you're sort of disqualified as an objective witness in the first place. No, the Fall of the West has to do with the undermining of the essential strengths of Western culture. And while organized religion has always played a big part in hindering our development, mere bad taste--like Celine Dion's--should not be taken as seriously as the romping jingoism of a straight up moron like Toby Keith. As for hip-hop seeping into everyday life and saturating other genres of pop music, hmmm...I'll admit you're on to something.
