I made the exact same comment the other night to Indy, in Chat. Nothing wrong with Chesney, but he's just not 'college football'.

That song of his belongs at Disneyworld, not as 'pump us up' theme music for CF.

The coming to your city song at the start of gameday is god fucking awful.

My younger son puts on some song called remember the name or something from Fort Minor to get psyched for his games, the older one plays Lose Yourself by Eminem before his games

a marketing question: what is the point of deploying weak musical acts to play a shitty song before football games? it appears we're unanimous in regarding these songs as the suck. the first explanation tends to be that the corporate types are trying to attract those who aren't exactly hardcore fans, which makes sense when trying to get them out to the stadium, but who's really going to sit through three hours of football just because kenny chesney is on the front end?

M Club,

Most people aren't music snobs. Most people like mainstream music. Otherwise, it would not be mainstream. The VAST MAJORITY of CFB fans like Kenny Chesney. No one is watching CFB because Kenny Chesney is singing around the commercials.

Like screw said, wrapping a product that is in high demand, whether it is in demand in your household or not, around commercials is a great marketing ploy. ChesneyFan" "Hmm....change the channel to another game during commercials and miss out of some more Kenny? I'll just sit right here and have another beer..."

The VAST MAJORITY of CFB fans like Kenny Chesney.
No. That's completely ridiculous. The vast majority of Americans are not country music fans. The vast majority of blacks are not country music fans. The vast majority of urban dwellers are not country music fans.

There's a reason country music has its own channel and even its own set of awards, separate from the Grammys and the American Music Awards. The reason is country is not considered mainstream. It's its own niche, separate from mainstream pop music.

To the majority of Americans the simple sound of Reba McIntyre doing her hokey Walmart drawl on TV is like nails on a chalkboard. For many Americans country music is almost a punchline.

The only demographics of American society where one may find a vast majority who like Kenny Chesney are those demographics where the vast majority like country music. Even there, country music fans have their favorites, and the people they hate, just like Nascar fan.

Not even the vast majority of country music fans like Kenny Chesney, and the vast majority of CF fans are not country music fans.

No way in hell 75%+ - or however you wish to define "vast majority" - of CF fans are Kenny Chesney fans.

I'd wager the true number is under 10%. I'd also wager that a simple majority of CF fans didn't even know who Kenny Chesney was, and they were looking at their TVs and saying to each other, "Who is this bland, country fuck cartoon character, and what is he doing on my TV during a CF game?"

I don't think there is an act, mainstream pop or otherwise, about whom one could accurately say the vast majority of CF fans like them. If there is, it certainly wouldn't be a country act. It would've had to have been someone like Michael Jackson, circa the Thriller era.

The vast majority though? Dunno 'bout that.

Didn't even know that was Kenny Chesney. Sleeveless t-shirt, the N'Sync hopping around, the lights = shit. Even though I hate country I would have accepted it if it hadn't been amped up like a Backdoor Boys concert.

But the song sucked. Completely. Who would get hyped up for something listening to that track? I actually found myself missing some great highlights just to avoid that POS screeching into my home theatre.

Van,

As much as you hate to admit it being the greatest CFB fan that ever lived that you are, the VAST MAJORITY of CFB fans reside in the South. More importantly, the VAST MAJORITY of the South population loves CFB.

What conference did ESPN just hook their wagon to? The SEC, that's right.

Where is that again? The South.

Why would ESPN do that? Because they have their pick of the litter for who they pimp.

So why pick the SEC? Because they get into more households than anywhere else.

And in SEC country, it being the conference/region with the largest CFB fanbase, country music is extremely popular. Kenny Chesney is the George Strait of this generation of country music. So, the #1 sports network pimps the #1 conference in the #1 hotbed for CFB using the #1 artist from probably the #1 genre of music in the area to market themselves and their sponsors.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're smarter than the suits at ESPN. YOU could run that joint SOOOOO much better than them. :meds:

Indy, do you even know what "vast majority" means??

Let's say there are 100 CF fans. 7 or 8 of them do NOT reside in the south, and of those people who do reside in the South, they don't all like Kenny Chesney, even among those who do like country music.

That's fucking insane.

The four most populous states in America are not in the south.
More importantly, the VAST MAJORITY of the South population loves CFB.
That's likely true, but they don't all like Kenny Chesney, any more than they all like any individual Nascar driver.

Then there are the 250 million other Americans, who don't give a rip about country music, much less Kenny Chesney.

ESPN doesn't need to find a guy who is liked by the "vast majority" of CF fans. They simply wanted a safe pick, and a safe pick could've also been U2, Kanye West or even fuggen Daughtry, none of whom are liked by the "vast majority" of CF fans.

You're a fucking imbecile.

They also stick Hank Williams, JR as their MNF theme song. Are you telling me that the "vast majority" of football fans are big Hank Williams, Jr fans? Most people - which means more than 50% - couldn't name you a single Hank Williams, Jr song, besides his theme song for MNF. Doesn't stop ABC from using him, does it?

ESPN sticks people like Ashley Simpson on as halftime entertainment. They go with whatever they feel like at the moment, because it's just filler fluff.

Kenny Chesney is not liked by the vast majority of college football fans. Kenny Chesney isn't liked by the vast majority of Alabama fans. No one country artist is liked by the vast majority of any group, other than his own fans.

Completely preposterous.

when the NFL started cheesing out it's coverage it was to grow the game to the women's demographic. gotta have weepy-eyed features about someone's "momma" getting out of the 'hood and raising her 7 boys and Sting to get the women on board so everyone can order a pizza or wings in-between all the hyper-macho NFL stuff. that's half the population. it stops being sports and "starts" being a "total entertainment package".

fuck, all sports now it's the bogus "story behind the story" bullshit that the ESPN's try and jack up to make them seem more necessary than what happens between the whistles and on the field. the whole psychology element makes it a "human interest" thing and less competition. the latter is only useful insofar as it can be inserted in the over-arching master-narrative. the NBA is unwatchable in this regard, IMO.

Yeah, only 2 of the 4 most populous. And yes, I consider Texas to be in the south. ESPN is a sports network and we are talkinkg CFB here. As hard as they've tried to make the northeast relevant in college football, they've failed. Mark New York, one of the remaining 2 of the top 4, out of CFB top states for CFB fans based on population.

Van, I'll concede that using the phrase "vast majority" was probably not the right choice of words. Then again, I've been kinda known to do that. If your hang-up is "vast mjoirty", so be it. Mea culpa on that one. Kenney Chesney may not be known and liked by a VAST MAJORITY, but he sure is by a god damn fuckload of the CFB population, especially in the markets that ESPN is catering to like those in the South. You think ESPN paid a record amount for the SEC TV contract because they were planning on trying to sell thier product to California? New York? Illinois? They bought it because in damn near every household in the South there is someone who waits for Saturdays. Yeah, you're never going to hit every household with what it is you try to market, but you at least play the percentages and shoot for as many as you can. Kenny Chesney, from a marketing standpoint, was a good choice.

As for Hank, I don't know why they stick with him. Did he have a contract with NBC/NFL and part of the deal was to retain him for X number of years? I have no idea. I have noticed that Hank has a smaller role in the pregame intro other than the fact they still use his song. He's definitley on his way out the door I think.

I thought Illinois was above Florida, so I was wrong there.

Okay, so three of the top four states are not in the South; including the top three, by a wide margin. Texas is in the Southwest, not the South. Texas is not a part of any SEC package, and they came from the old SWC, not the SEC.

Besides, how big is Kenny Chesney in Dade and Broward counties?

Texas is the most southern part of the 48. Geographically, it is in the south. If you want to define regions by football conferences, then you are saying Texas is in the West (MWC) because of TCU? Or Louisianna is in the West (WAC) because of LaTech? Pull your head out of your ass. Arkansas was once in the Southwest Conference and then moved to the SEC. All of a sudden they geographically change?

Texas is Texas. It does not consider itself to be a part of the South. Its heritage is not the Deep South, it's the old Southwest, and not just the football conference. Texas has more in common with Oklahoma and New Mexico than it does with Alabama, Tennessee and Mississippi.

Also, New Mexico and large portions of California are not part of the South, despite the fact that they're geographically situated south of places which are considered to be in the South.

Beyond all that, Kenny Chesney isn't liked by the vast majority of Texans either. He has fans there, sure, but do the vast majority of Texans like him?

Of course not; he's just one country music act among many. I don't even know if it'd be accurate to say the vast majority of Texans like Willie Nelson, ZZ Top or Stevie Ray Vaughan.

ESPN is sucking up to the Nascar/country music populace, and Kenny Chesney is just the guy they happened to choose. Next year they'll probably go with some rock or rap act.

Oh, and nice job adding "Deep" to what I said. Texas is in the South. Hell, you even said southwest. Fine. South is part of that.

So, along with Texas we've now also got New Mexico, Arizona and southern California being part of the South, since they're part of the Southwest, which includes the word 'south', and they're all located in the southern portion of the Lower 48.

Okay.

Face it: You're from Duluth.

Also, no, SRV was not dead before you began to give two shits about music; at least not if one is to go by all the horrible '80s crap you know and love so much. He died on August 27th, 1990, which was well after a lot of the garbage you love came out.

You don't know him, but it's not because of when he lived and died. It's because you were too busy mooning over Dexys Midnight Runners and Wham to even have a clue as to the real music which was going on right beneath your own nose there in Texas.

Besides, when a person lived has no bearing on whether you're familiar with them.

Pretty sure you're familiar with Hank Williams, Sr. Abe Lincoln, too, and the Apollo moon landing, and Napoleon, and...

Oh, nevermind. Go ahead and enjoy your rollerskating rink music.
