Last one near me up in North Fort Myers closed a couple years ago. One summer (1973) two other guys and myself ran one back in CNY. Wild times and lots of funny stories ! Remember popping up big bags of popcorn---packing some soda and beer in a cooler---putting PJs on the kids and going out for a night a film entertainment ?? Glory times !!

I think there are two, maybe three drive-ins in the greater PHX area. Still haven't been to any of the ones out here, although Zombieland and District 9 looks like a pretty solid double feature, so that could change shortly.

When I was a freshman at UC-Riverside in the early 90s, we used to drop acid and go see Alladin and Home Alone 2 at the local drive-in. Fun times...

They actually just built a new drive-in theater in the Houston area a couple of years ago.

Wow.
Haven't been to one of those since 70's...I can't tell you where one is either.

Of course we would do the mandatory thing of sneaking peeps in , in the trunk...

Most of the ones I knew turned porn....and one had a screen situated in such a way as to face the interstate :D

All gone now , of course.

The one I worked at had the screen visible from a main road, so we could not show the X-rated versions of some of those "raunchy" 70's flicks; had to use the R-rated versions of such classics as "Teen-Age Tramps" and "The Naughty Stewardesses". Funny shit.

No Shit - just the fact you're shut down from Nov.-March in the northern states would have been enough before the whole internet / on demand thingy.

We do our own "drive in" at home. I'll move a Flat screen out on the deck and hook the wireless to it.

The only drive in theater we had here shut down in 1987.

There might be one 2 hours from me in Charleston, WV.

Two in the metro Detroit area - one downriver in Dearborn and the other at the Pontiac Silverdome. Dearborn runs 12 screens with two shows for 7 bucks. Pontiac sucks as they sport small screens.

Have one about a 20 minute drive in bolton. It does a pretty good bidness and has 3 screens. With home systems like we have now, they really don't make much sense, but, I think a lot of folks go to them just as a nostalgia thingy. I think they also get plenty of bidness from hs/college crowds.

You're thinking of Mansfield drive-in near UConn.... the Manchester drive-in (in Bolton... go figure?) is closed.

Yup. It is mansfield. Don't know why I was calling it bolton, other than bolton is fairly close by.

The berlin turnpike used to have about 300 drive ins. They are all home depots or strip malls now.

I believe both Santee and South Bay double as flea market/swap meets on weekend days as well.

Every few weeks they throw up some large inflatable movie screens at the local sports park for a 2009 version of the drive-in:

In Houston, they throw a satin tent over Rumple's wife, hoist her from a crane up about 20 feet... viola, instant movie screen.

In their heyday, drive-in's probably rivaled wine coolers as the number one facilitator of teenage sex.

The good old ford-wyoming drive in. Dearborn is not Downriver FYI.
