I'm starting to think Weis is cursed
The fat man can't catch a break. This is setting aside all of the subjective arguments about his actuall coaching accumen. Back up QB Dayne Crist tore his ACL against WSU on a freak play and will be out 4-6 months. With the success that Clausen is having this year, it is obvious that he will have to make a decision to come back to school or turn pro. If he comes back, I would assume that Golden Tate would as well. ND would have one of, if not the, top offenses in college football next season. The defense is getting better, especially against the run. 2010 would be set up to have a special year.
One can hardly blame Clausen if he decided to bolt for the NFL, given Bradford's situation and the rookie salary cap that will likely be in place. But Weis has recruited well and had established depth at most positions, something that hasn't happened since the Holtz era. So even if Clausen and Tate left, 2010 should have been no worse than a 9-3 type of year.
With Crist's injury, and if Clausen goes pro, ND will have ZERO QB's for spring practice. With ACL rehabs being very tricky, there is a distinct posibility that ND's starting QB against Purdue in 2010 will be someone that has just come off major reconstructive surgery and will be practicing for the first time in August. Talk about awesome. Even when Weis wins, he loses.
Here's hoping Jimmy decides to stay for his senior year.

Yep. Having your star QB leave early for the NFL kinda sucks.
If Clausen becomes convinced that he'll go in the top ten picks, he'd be a fool not to go.

Totally agree about Clausen. The difference in the situations is that USC had Mustain, Corp and Barkley competing for the job during spring practice. ND will literally have no scholarship QB's for the spring if Clausen leaves, and they will have two meh recruits coming in in the fall.Van wrote:Yep. How good would that make Clausen look then, by comparison?

Re: I'm starting to think Weis is cursed
I don't think that factors into it at all. Clausen is already looked at very highly by Notre Dame fans. Watching him progress from an undersized freshman into someone who lived up to the extreem hype by becoming a Heisman candidate in his junior year has been very fun. There hasn't been a QB at Notre Dame with his kind of accuracy. I think he knows where he stands right now w/r/t the NFL.
We see all of the stupid and uninformed websites for draft projections and hear the likes of Todd McShay and Mel Kiper prattle on, but he will have a whole different set of resources to listen to.
Also, the flip side is "Come back and be the front runner for the Heisman, compete for a NC and cement yourself as the #1 pick in next years draft."

Pretty sure Mark Sanchez and Sam Bradford just went a long way towards quashing the appeal of that particular flipside.

It's working out all right for Colt McCoy

How so? I don't think McCoy's done anything this year to improve his draft stock. I don't think he'll impress much once he hits the combine and his senior day.Killian wrote:It's working out all right for Colt McCoy
Claussen is a better NFL prospect, as is Bradford- even with the shoulder problems.

Ugh. McCoy will likely play for a NC and sit in NY as a Heisman finalist. Its not always about improving draft stock.TheJON wrote:How so? Re: I'm starting to think Weis is cursed
IIRC, Nate Montana decided to transfer to a junior college so he could get some actual college game experience under his belt. The plan was for him to transfer back to ND eventually. So, in a pinch, I suppose he'd be available for spring practice. Of course, and unfortunately, Nate isn't quite the QB his father was.Killian wrote:With Crist's injury, and if Clausen goes pro, ND will have ZERO QB's for spring practice.
