1984: 31-29 loss to Purdue
1988: 31-30 loss to Miami
1988: 34-31 win over OSU.

Thirteen freaking years between games in which they gave up thirty! They didn't give up thirty even one time during the entire decade of the '70s!

Holy shit!

I noticed some amazing things, looking all that up.

First off, it was incredible, how many times they shut people out. They ran off three shutouts in a row quite a bit, sandwiched by games in which they gave up maybe three, or seven.

They also won in so many blowouts, it was almost hard to believe. They had streaks of 55-0, 55-0, 61-0, 71-7...all over the place! Seemed like every time they played Iowa, Illinois, Indiana or Navy it was just a monster blowout.

It also seemed like Ohio St fucked up a lot of their otherwise monster seasons. For the first decade or so, it seemed like any time they'd lose to OSU, even if it left them with a 9-1 record, there would be no bowl game at all.

Then, once they began going to bowl games, it seemed like they lost nearly every one. It was ridiculous, seeing how they would just slaughter people all year long, then lose their bowl game. They even lost to UCLA twice in one year, and they gave ASU their only Rose Bowl victory.

I also noticed that the final game Bo ever coached was another Rose Bowl loss, to USC.

Man, that was some primitive football, that Big 10 smashmouth football from the '70s. The good teams just slaughtered the bad ones in conference, then the good ones went out and lost their bowl game. It must've been simply awful back then to be a fan of a lower-tier Big 10 team. You got stomped 60-0, practically every time. You were lucky to even score, maybe once every couple seasons or so.

There are quite a few reasons Bo's team hardly gave up more than 30 points. One was that they and OSU hoarded the conference's talent. Another was the style of play. People didn't pass as much as it already was, and Bo was a bit extreme in this regard. A quick strike was any drive under 10 plays, not to mention we're talking about games where each team had about six possessions. Also, it didn't hurt that the other big dog in the conference was governed by a similar anaethma toward the forward pass.

That said, our defense is definitely a piece of shit.

And that Rose Bowl loss to ASU was a Pyrrhic victory of sorts considering OSU saw it as reason enough to hire John Cooper.

Love the trip down memory lane, this is why Bo is so special to people who love what Michigan Football was. I was at the game on Saturday. My seats are in the Victors Club area where people have been sitting in the same seats since Bennie Oosterban was roaming the sidelines. These people are out of patience when it comes to the regime change. Sitting through last year was tolerable in that it was supposed to lead to a brighter future, it still may, but these folks have seen a lot of winning in AA and 1 win per year in conference is not going down well. 75 year old men were going apeshit when RR's special teams got pantsed by the onside kick in the third quarter, or when he didn't have a go to hurry up play when there was potential for a reviewed play. The defense in particular (still Schafer's fault s'up Mgo) hurts the old timers. The last two years have been the worst on record. When Purdue racks up nearly 600 yards of offense in the Big House.......FUCK!!! I mean, Purdue had not won in AA since before I was born...and I am not young!!!!

The reasonable man in me says it's a matter of time and personel. I mean there are two walk ons playing on defense, an ex running back playing corner, true freshmen seeing way too much meaningful time on the d-line. In time there will be talent in spots where the bodies are merely warm now. Guys will be recruited to play cornerback....and play cornerback. The young will mature and the subsequent classes will provide depth. It is a process unlike '69 when Glenn Schembechler rolled into town. I'm not worried about RR's offense, it will score a ton. But I want him to open the checkbook and hire the best defensive mind there is available. Robinson may be good, he really has very little to work with, but if there is a defensive savant out there I would love to have him in AA.

the problem here is timing. there really isn't much more to this defense other than brandon graham, donovan warren, and a bunch of warm bodies. and in warren's case he can't be cut loose because there's absolutely no safety help.

anyhow, the timing. dickrod truly doesn't have much to work with, so these numbers are understandable, to a degree. but now we're stuck waiting till he recruits some defensive help before we can really get on his ass for the shitty defense he's probably going to throw out there anyway.
