"Mark Falk, 54, who lives down the street from the store, said Jang is well liked in the neighborhood because his business is community- rather than profit-oriented."

Here we have our typical Barack Obama voter. Profit, what a silly concept. :meds:

RACK Mr. Jang indeed, and a big BWAAHAA to the moron who got Darwined.

Being as I've lived a sheltered life, I was dumbstruck when I first encountered a store such as that described in the article. My daughter used to live in PG County, a stone's throw (which would probably be intercepted if chucked by the home team) from FedEx Field. One of the first times I went to visit her there, I made a trip to a local convenience store to buy some beer. I'm used to going into such a store, walking up to the beer cooler, selecting the suds of my choice, taking it to a fully exposed checkout counter, and making my purchase. Such is not the case in PG County. ALL merchandise in the store is behind double layers of bullet-proof glass, with a small tunnel between the two layers connecting the Mr. Jangs of the world to his customers through which purchased material and payment is passed. Customers have to tell Jang what they want and he gets it for them. I know this will come as a shock to many of you, but the majority of PG County's population is of the darker persuasion.

RACKS again to Jang.

Here we have an idiot who probably doesn't live near a liquor store in an urban area. Thinking about your neighbors? What a silly concept. :meds:
Anyone can sit on their ass and "think about their neighbors", it takes people with the gumption and work ethic to turn a PROFIT such that they can actually DO SOMETHING FOR THEIR NEIGHBORS.

Contrary to the bullshit rhetoric put forth, there are plently of people who do just that.

Just out of curiosity, so when you take your profit - disposable income - from your paycheck and spend it on booze, beer, sporting events, or what it is that YOU CHOOSE - are you thinking of your neighbors ?

Yeah, since the two concepts are mutually exclusive. No way does community orientation (read: customer service) translate into higher profits.

Profit and disposable income are not the same.

You're right but when you're talking about the principle of money left over after one has received revenue and satisfied their obligations and debts they're close enough for government work.

Here in detroit we have similar establishments. Within Detroit proper nearly all the neighborhood liquor stores are built up like the one describe by Smackie. Those in the business district are of the open counter variety. As you move north, west, and south toward city limits the counters become more open until you hit, for example, 8 Mile Rd. Then it's right back to the fully-enclosed counters and that continues across 8 Mile Rd. and few a few blocks into suburbia. Get into Pontiac, MI about 16 miles north of Detroit and you'll see the enclosed counters.

Common denominator among the fully-enclosed countered establishments - black population.

One of the reasons PGC is a primo location for armed robbery is its proximity to the D.C. border. Cross that imaginary line and the cops go back to their speeding tickets and donuts.

I've got an idea...why don't you crawl through his window with a few Ayn Rand tracts? :D
