Screw, I guess they're slightly less inept as every other Federal agency dude. I mean the government is good at two things.

Killing and collecting money. That's it.

Your new in town. Gladhanding, circle jerking, "I know so and so and I can get you ..... " general politicking is the name of the game inside the beltway. People like to exert whatever power they have, no matter how small, to feed their egos and impress their friends. That's DC in general dude.

Especially at a scene like this. A "pound of flesh" will be exacted, only because it's an embarassment.

The higher ups at NBC are tight with the Obama admin. They will prolly just throw a few mid-level folks under the bus and it will go away. Had this been a Fox operation, a boatload of higher ups would have their heads on pikes on the whiete house lawn by now.
